The increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, electric vehicles (EVs), and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in distribution networks presents new challenges for maintaining voltage within the standard limits. Traditional voltage control methods are often insufficient to manage the complex dynamics introduced by decentralized and variable power sources. This paper proposes a multi-agent framework for voltage control in distribution systems with a high penetration of IBRs. The framework leverages decentralized agents coordinating with a voltage regulator agent, including PV, EV, and fuel cell agents. Each agent monitors and controls its local voltage and power generation or consumption while communicating with the voltage regulator to ensure system-wide voltage control. The novelty lies in the proposed framework’s flexibility, scalability, and adaptability to varying network conditions, particularly under high renewable energy penetration. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework effectively mitigates voltage deviations, decreases the control operation of the voltage regulator, and supports the seamless integration of IBRs into the distribution network. This approach shows promise for enhancing the resilience and efficiency of future power systems with high shares of renewable energy.

We propose a method to statistically analyze rates obtained from count data in spatio-temporal terms, allowing for regional and temporal comparisons. Generalized fused Lasso Poisson model is used to estimate the spatio-temporal effects of the rates;the coordinate descent algorithm is used for estimation. The results of an analysis using data on crime rates in Japan’s Osaka Prefecture from 1995 to 2008 confirm the validity of the approach. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

A search for auroral radio emission from β Pictoris b

Magnetized exoplanets can serve as the source of auroral radio emissions, allowing us to characterize the magnetospheric properties of these planets. Successful detections of auroral radio emissions from brown dwarfs, as well as from Jupiter, suggest that Jupiter-like planets in distant orbits may also generate radio emissions through a similar mechanism. In this study, we present our search for 250–500 MHz emissions from β Pictoris b, one of the most extensively studied young Jupiter-like planets. We conducted the search using the upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope. Despite the favourable orbital inclination, no signal was detected, putting 3σ upper limits on the radiation at 0.18 mJy. We translate this limit into constraints on the ionospheric and magnetospheric parameters, assuming that the emission is powered by the Hill current system. While the upper limit is larger by a factor of a few than the nominal estimate of radio intensity, we put constraints on the magnetospheric and ionospheric parameters. © 2023 The Author(s).

Many caregivers experienced lower back injuries by patient transfer motion. Patient transfer motion causes lumbar load since this task requires lifting and twisting. For this problem, previous studies explored the suitable posture such as trunk angle to reduce lumbar load in patient transfer motion. However, it is difficult to adjust these postures for caregivers because these postures should be dynamically adjusted in patient transfer motion. Thus, we focus on initial foot placement to reduce lumbar load, because initial foot placement is adjustable before starting transfer. Therefore, the objective of this study is to find suitable initial foot placement for patient transfer motion. In the experiment, 10 healthy males performed simulated patient transfer motion with anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) foot placement. Erector spinae muscle activity was measured during patient transfer by the surface electromyography (sEMG). Furthermore, compressive force of L4-L5 was calculated by the computational musculoskeletal simulator. The results showed that AP foot placement provided smaller compressive force of L4-L5 than ML. On the other hand, there was no significant difference for erector spinae muscle activity between AP and ML foot placement. These findings will contribute to determining suitable initial posture to prevent lower back injuries in patient transfer motion.

A Gurson model improved by cohesive traction-separation law to realize transition from ductile to brittle fracture

The objective of this study is to improve Gurson model by combining with cohesive traction-separation law to realize crack propagation associated with transition from ductile to brittle fracture. To embed the cohesive cracks into the Gurson model, five kinds of conditional equations are solved for the crack opening displacement and the plastic strain. One of the conditional equations correspond to the local balance equations between the cohesive tractions and the principal stresses and the others are the yield function, the isotropic hardening law, evolutional equation of void volume fraction and inequality constraint. The enhanced Gurson model allows us to represent the nucleation and propagation of the ductile crack along with the void nucleation and growth. Moreover, it is realized by the embedded cohesive traction-separation law that the stress rapidly drops down when the crack accelerates due to the transition from the ductile to brittle fracture. Throughout the numerical examples at several temperatures, it is confirmed that the proposed model enables us to realize load-displacement curves depending on temperature along with the ductile-brittle transition. Also, the proposed model has represented changes of crack propagation rate and void volume fraction by depending on temperature. Furthermore, the proposed model has capability of reproducing the crack propagation associated with the transition from the ductile to brittle fracture at -60 °C. © 2020 Japan Welding Society. Vehicle platooning can be formulated as an optimal control problem and many solving paradigms, such as Pontryagin's maximum principle-based and dynamical programming methods, have been recently developed. However, these methods usually rely on solving a group of necessary conditions or Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) partial differential equations, which is hard to calculate. Besides, due to the heterogeneous dynamics of different vehicles in a mixed and complex platoon which comprises of not only connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), but also human-driven vehicles (HDVs), it is also challenging to coordinate the behaviors of different vehicles in an unified control framework. Here we provide a Neural Mixed Platoon control (NMPC) framework, a novel control design for mixed vehicle platooning based on a neural ordinary differential equation (NODE). We first formulate an optimal control model that incorporates the heterogeneous dynamics of a leading CAV and several following HDVs. We use a neural network to parameterize a state-feedback controller and join the neural controller and the mixed platooning dynamics into the NODE solver to create a closed-loop and learnable controlled system. The resulting system can learn optimal control inputs driving the mixed platoon to evolve from a given beginning condition to the target state within a finite duration in an unsupervised manner. Finally, simulation results validate our suggested method's usefulness in terms of space headway and velocity tracking. © 2022 IEEE.

Universality in the tape-peeling trace

Spatiotemporal patterns, which are of interest in statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics, form on the tape-peeling trace. Recently, we have proposed a mathematical model to describe these pattern formation in the tape-peeling trace. In this paper, we further investigate the tape-peeling model from the perspective of its universality class. We confirm that our model belongs to the 1-dimensional directed percolation universality class. Furthermore, the experimental results from a previous study are re-analyzed, and it is suggested that the tape-peeling trace can also be classified within the 1-dimensional directed percolation universality class. This note addresses the problem of evaluating the impact of an attack on discrete-time nonlinear stochastic control systems. The problem is formulated as an optimal control problem with a joint chance constraint that forces the adversary to avoid detection throughout a given time period. Due to the joint constraint, the optimal control policy depends not only on the current state, but also on the entire history, leading to an explosion of the search space and making the problem generally intractable. However, we discover that the current state and whether an alarm has been triggered, or not, is sufficient for specifying the optimal decision at each time step. This information, which we refer to as the alarm flag, can be added to the state space to create an equivalent optimal control problem that can be solved with existing numerical approaches using a Markov policy. Additionally, we note that the formulation results in a policy that does not avoid detection once an alarm has been triggered. We extend the formulation to handle multi-alarm avoidance policies for more reasonable attack impact evaluations, and show that the idea of augmenting the state space with an alarm flag is valid in this extended formulation as well. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

This article investigates a fractional-order coupled Hindmarsh-Rose neural networks model. Firstly, the existence and stability of an equilibrium point in the system are verified. Then, the periodic bifurcation behavior of the system on a two-parameter plane is studied, and numerical simulations show the existence of both non -chaotic and chaotic plus periodic bifurcation behavior on the two-parameter plane. Finally, a feedback controller was designed to stabilize the bifurcation point of the delayed system and increase the stable range of the system. © 2023 Technical Committee on control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

A tree detection method based on trunk point cloud section in dense plantation forest using drone Li DAR data

Single-tree detection is one of the main research topics in quantifying the structural properties of forests. Drone Li DAR systems and terrestrial laser scanning systems produce high-density point clouds that offer great promise for forest inventories in limited areas. However, most studies have focused on the upper canopy layer and neglected the lower forest structure. This paper describes an innovative tree detection method using drone Li DAR data from a new perspective of the under-canopy structure. This method relies on trunk point clouds, with undercanopy sections split into heights ranging from 1 to 7 m, which were processed and compared, to determine a suitable height threshold to detect trees. The method was tested in a dense cedar plantation forest in the Aichi Prefecture, Japan, which has a stem density of 1140 stems·ha^(-1) and an average tree age of 42 years. Dense point cloud data were generated from the drone Li DAR system and terrestrial laser scanning with an average point density of 5000 and 6500 points·m^(-2), respectively. Tree detection was achieved by drawing point-cloud section projections of tree trunks at different heights and calculating the center coordinates. The results show that this trunk-section-based method significantly reduces the difficulty of tree detection in dense plantation forests with high accuracy(F1-Score=0.9395). This method can be extended to different forest scenarios or conditions by changing section parameters.
