Permanent magnets are used in various products and essential for human society. If omnipresent permanent magnets could directly convert heat into electricity, they would lead to innovative energy harvesting and thermal management technologies. However, achieving such "multifunctionality" has been difficult due to poor thermoelectric performance of conventional magnets. In this work, we develop a multifunctional composite magnet (MCM) that enables giant transverse thermoelectric conversion while possessing permanent magnet features. MCM comprising alternately and obliquely stacked SmCo5/Bi0.2Sb1.8Te3 multilayers exhibits an excellent transverse thermoelectric performance at room temperature by optimizing its anisotropic structure. Owing to the extremely low interfacial electrical and thermal resistivities, the experimentally determined figure of merit zxyT reaches 0.20 close to the analytically calculated ideal value. The MCM-based thermopile module generates 204 mW in maximum at a temperature difference of 152 K, whose power density normalized by heat transfer area and temperature gradient is not only record-high among transverse thermoelectric modules but also comparable to that of commercial thermoelectric modules utilizing the Seebeck effect. The multifunctionality of our MCM provides unprecedented opportunities for energy harvesting and thermal management everywhere permanent magnets are currently used. © 2024, CC BY.

Currently, a lot of universities are offering Java programming courses for teaching the first-step object-oriented programming language. For novice students, to master writing readable codes using proper names for variables, classes, and methods is crucial in Java programming, to improve understandability and maintainability. In this paper, we consider four naming rules to write a readable code and implement the naming rule checking function to check whether the given code follows them. For evaluations, we applied the proposal to 2, 908 source codes submitted in Java programming courses from students in Okayama University, Japan, Malang State Polytechnic, Indonesia, and Yamaguchi University, Japan. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposal. © 2025 IEEE.

Robots mimicking the flight of insects and birds (i.e., “flapping flying robots”) have considerably attracted attention owing to their numerous advantages such as energy-saving, reduced noise levels, and safety during a crash. However, the takeoff method leveraged by existing flapping flying robots is limited, as ground-level takeoff may damage the robot. This study aims to develop a remotely controlled flapping flying robot that can fly independently. The developed robot consists of a flapping flying robot that can obtain a thrust of approximately its own weight by flapping its wings and a Snap Motor as a lightweight jumping mechanism. The findings demonstrate that a jumping takeoff effectively avoids wing-ground collision while contributing to stable posture during takeoff.

Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a standard procedure performed worldwide for diseases of the nose and sinuses, but it is highly technical and requires effective training. A system for evaluating the skill level of surgeons using machine learning based on measurement data from endoscopic sinus surgeries performed with a 3D sinus model has been developed. In this study, an analysis using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values was conducted to investigate behaviors that significantly reflect surgeons’ skill proficiency. Additionally, feature reduction was performed using a variable reduction method, eliminating features in ascending order of their contributions as calculated by SHAP. This approach aimed not only to mitigate the risk of overfitting due to a decrease in explanatory variables but also to improve the accuracy of classifying surgeons based on skill differences. The results demonstrated that reducing features based on SHAP contributions led to an improvement in classification accuracy.

We consider the synthesis problem of a multi-agent system under signal temporal logic (STL) specifications representing bounded-time tasks that need to be satisfied recurrently over an infinite horizon. Motivated by the limited approaches to handling recurring STL systematically, we tackle the infinite-horizon control problem with a receding horizon scheme equipped with additional STL constraints that introduce minimal complexity and a backward-reachability-based terminal condition that is straightforward to construct and ensures recursive feasibility. Subsequently, we decompose the global receding horizon optimization problem into agent-level programs the objectives of which are to minimize local cost functions subject to local and joint STL constraints. We propose a scheduling policy that allows individual agents to sequentially optimize their control actions while maintaining recursive feasibility. This results in a distributed strategy that can operate online as a model predictive controller. Last, we illustrate the effectiveness of our method via a multi-agent system example assigned a surveillance task.

In the Emotion research, there has been extensive work on emotion classification using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Despite most studies having achieved high accuracy, there is a potential for improvement in the model, particularly in training time reduction to optimize the modeling efficiency. Hence, our study aims to develop an efficient EEG-based emotion classification model that achieves high accuracy with a reduced number of training epochs. The proposed model, named EmoSense, employs a hybrid deep learning neural network architecture, which comprises a combination of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Deep Autoencoder (DAE), Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM), and an Attention mechanism. EEG features are first extracted using Differential Entropy (DE) on the EEG channels, which are then structured to form a four-dimensional (4D) representation of features with temporal, spatial, and frequency information. Subsequently, the extracted features will be used as input to the proposed model for training. Experimental evaluation of the publicly available DEAP dataset demonstrated that the proposed model achieved an accuracy of 94.11% with only 35 epochs. This performance is comparable with the result of the Cascaded Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks model developed by Meng et al., which reported an accuracy of 94.64% with 100 epochs. The primary reason for the comparison with Meng et al. is that our overall process, including feature extraction and formation, is similar to their study, with the only difference being the deep learning architecture. Our finding indicates that the EmoSense model is not only able to achieve comparable accuracy but also reduces the number of training epochs, demonstrating the potential to learn the EEG features in a shorter time and lowering the computational cost. This study will benefit EEG-based emotion recognition to be more accessible and practical for real-world applications.

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is typically achieved with a chiral luminophore. However, using a helical nanosized fused quartz cell consisting of chiral silica, we could control the wavelength and helical sense of the CPL of an achiral luminophore. Chiral silica with a helical nanostructure was prepared by calcining a mixture of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-functionalized isotactic poly(methacrylate) (it-PMAPOSS) and a small amount of chiral dopant. The chiral silica encapsulated functional molecules, including luminophores, along the helical nanocavity, leading to induced circular dichroism (ICD) and induced circularly polarized luminescence (iCPL). Because chiral silica can act as a helical nanosized fused quartz cell, it can encapsulate not only the luminophore but also solvent molecules. By changing the solvent in the luminophore-containing nanosized fused quartz cell, the wavelength of the CPL was controlled. This method provides an effective strategy for designing novel CPL-active materials. © 2023 The Authors. Published by American Chemical Society.

Designing flexible hard magnetic materials for zero-magnetic-field operation of the anomalous Nernst effect

The global shift towards a carbon-neutral society has accelerated the demand for green energy, driving research into efficient technologies for harvesting energy from low-grade waste heat. Recently, transverse thermoelectrics based on the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) has gained attention due to their simple device structure, scalability, and manufacturing-friendly nature. While topological single crystals and epitaxial films have been focused for enhancing the ANE-driven thermoelectric performance, further improvements in material design are necessary for practical applications. Here, we report an easy-to-implement strategy for designing mechanically flexible and magnetically hard transverse thermoelectric materials by creating amorphous-crystalline heterogeneous composites. We fabricated and optimized the heterogeneous composites through controlled heat treatment, achieving significant enhancements in the coercivity and anomalous Nernst coefficient, while maintaining flexibility. Additionally, using the developed material, we constructed a single-material-based coiled device and demonstrated the zero-field operation of the ANE-based energy harvesting from curved heat sources. These results validate the feasibility of using the ANE-based flexible materials for energy harvesting applications. © 2024, CC BY.

Hybrid Near-field and Far-field Localization with Holographic MIMO

Due to its ability to precisely control wireless beams, holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) is expected to be a promising solution to achieve high-accuracy localization. However, as the scale of HMIMO increases to improve beam control capability, the corresponding near-field (NF) region expands, indicating that users may exist in both NF and far-field (FF) regions with different electromagnetic transmission characteristics. As a result, existing methods for pure NF or FF localization are no longer applicable. We consider a hybrid NF and FF localization scenario in this paper, where a base station (BS) locates multiple users in both NF and FF regions with the aid of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which is a low-cost implementation of HMIMO. In such a scenario, it is difficult to locate the users and optimize the RIS phase shifts because whether the location of the user is in the NF or FF region is unknown, and the channels of different users are coupled. To tackle this challenge, we propose a RIS-enabled localization method that searches the users in both NF and FF regions and tackles the coupling issue by jointly estimating all user locations. We derive the localization error bound by considering the channel coupling and propose an RIS phase shift optimization algorithm that minimizes the derived bound. This article introduces two novel datasets for cell motility and wound healing research: the wound healing assay dataset (WHAD) and the cell adhesion and motility assay dataset (CAMAD). WHAD comprises time-lapse phase-contrast images of wound healing assays using genetically modified MCF10A and MCF7 cells, while CAMAD includes MDA-MB-231 and RAW 264.7 cells cultured on various substrates. These datasets offer diverse experimental conditions, comprehensive annotations, and high-quality imaging data, addressing gaps in existing resources. The collection methods, experimental designs, and annotation processes are detailed, emphasizing the reliability and utility of our datasets. WHAD and CAMAD enable researchers to develop robust algorithms for cell tracking, segmentation, and behavior analysis in phase-contrast microscopy images. The applications of these datasets span cancer research, image processing technique development, and automated analysis of wound healing and cell motility assays. By providing these resources, we aim to accelerate progress in biomedical image analysis and cell biology research.
