Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) can create favorable multipath to establish strong links that are useful in millimeter wave (mmWave) communications. While previous works used Rayleigh or Rician fading, we use the fluctuating two-ray (FTR) distribution to model the small-scale fading in mmWave frequency. First, we obtain the statistical characterizations of the product of independent FTR random variables (RVs) and the sum of product of FTR RVs. For the RIS-aided and amplify-and-forward (AF) relay systems, we derive exact end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expressions. To maximize the end-to-end SNR, we propose a novel and simple way to obtain the optimal phase shifts at the RIS elements. The optimal power allocation scheme for the AF relay system is also proposed. Furthermore, we evaluate important performance metrics including the outage probability and the average bit error probability. To validate the accuracy of our analytical results, Monte-Carlo simulations are subsequently conducted to provide interesting insights. It is found that the RIS-aided system can achieve the same performance as the AF relay system with low transmit power. More interestingly, as the channel conditions improve, the RIS-aided system can outperform the AF relay system having the same transmit power with a smaller number of reflecting elements. A novel non-geometrical stochastic model(NGSM)for non-wide sense station ary uncorrelated scattering(non-WSSUS)vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V)channels is *** model is based on a conventional NGSM and employs a more accurate method to reproduce the realistic characteristics of V2V channels,which successfully extends the existing NGSM to include the line-of-sight(LoS)***,the statistical properties of the proposed model in different scenarios,including Doppler power spectral density(PSD),power delay profile(PDP),and the tap correlation coefficient matrix are simulated and compared with those of the existing ***,the simulation results dem onstrate not only the utility of the proposed model,but also the correctness of our theoreti cal derivations.

User-Centric Joint Access-Backhaul Design for Full-Duplex Self-Backhauled Wireless Networks

Full-duplex self-backhauling is promising to provide cost-effective and flexible backhaul connectivity for ultra-dense wireless networks, but also poses a great challenge to resource management between the access and backhaul links. In this paper, we propose a user-centric joint access-backhaul transmission framework for full-duplex self-backhauled wireless networks. In the access link, user-centric clustering is adopted so that each user is cooperatively served by multiple small base stations (SBSs). In the backhaul link, user-centric multicast transmission is proposed so that each user’s message is treated as a common message and multicast to its serving SBS cluster. We first formulate an optimization problem to maximize the network weighted sum rate through joint access-backhaul beamforming and SBS clustering when global channel state information (CSI) is available. This problem is efficiently solved via the successive lower-bound maximization approach with a novel approximate objective function and the iterative link removal technique. We then extend the study to the stochastic joint access-backhaul beamforming optimization with partial CSI. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for both full CSI and partial CSI scenarios. They also show that the transmission design with partial CSI can greatly reduce the CSI overhead with little performance degradation. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A sea skimming missile is needed to be flown above mean sea level as low as it can, in order to decrease detectability;so that, survivability of the missile against counter attacks of the target ships is maximized. On the other hand, flying at very low height is a tough task under disturbances due to sea waves and measurement errors of various sensors used in height control loop. Thus, a robust altitude control system design is the main challenge among the other control algorithms for a sea skimming missile. In this paper, extended Kalman filter based altitude controller method is proposed and compared with the existing designs in literature. Simulation results under a few scenarios, in which sensor errors, severe sea conditions, and limited computing power are taken into account, are shared. Results show that the extended Kalman filter based altitude controller has satisfactory performance against many real world issues. © 2016, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. In heterogeneous networks, network selection is an impor-tant task for reconfigurable mobile devices (MDs). In the reconfigurable MD architecture that has been standardized by the European Telecommu-nications Standards Institute (ETSI), the network selection functionality is handled by a software component called Mobility Policy Manager (MPM). In this paper, we present an implementation of theMPMwhereby a reconfig-urableMDconforming to the ETSI standard can select the most appropriate radio access network (RAN) to use. We implemented a reconfigurable MD test-bed compliant with the ETSI standard, and show that the network se-lection driven by the MPM enhances the throughput of the receivingMDby about 26% compared to the arbitrary network selection provided by a con-ventional reconfigurable MD without the functionality of MPM, verifying the functionality of the MPM.

Solving the Economic and Emission dispatch (ED/MED) problem becomes more complex when the combined version (CEED) of the two aforementioned cases is considered. The basic idea is to achieve the lowest possible cost with the smallest amount of pollutant and this problem is known as the combined economic-emission dispatch (CEED). In this paper we make use of a multi-objective optimization approach in order to find the best balance when the CEED is considered. Another contribution of this article is the incorporation of what is known as the autonomous energy generating system, which is composed by Micro-turbines, Wind, Solar, and Battery generators; they are used along with the thermal (diesel) generating units. To find the best cost-emission balance in the objective function, we've implemented two meta-heuristic optimization tools, the well-known Harmony Search and a novel one named Virus Optimization algorithms, HS and VOA respectively. The study was performed on a system composed of 15 generating units. Here, a thorough statistical study was conducted in order to determine not only the performance of the two optimization tools in term of computation efficiency, but also, the quality of the Pareto Frontier delivered by both algorithms, which are compared with a Reference Pareto Front (RPF). Based on this study we found that both algorithms delivered competing results, with the Harmony Search having slightly better Euclidean distance value from the RPF when compared with the Virus Optimization algorithm; however, HS does take much longer computation time to achieve this result.

In this paper, we propose a design rule of a modified quasi-cyclic structure for bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID). The proposed structure is especially favorable for low-complexity hardware implementation. In addition, it will be shown that the proposed structure effectively removes low-weight codewords, which in turn greatly improves error-floor behaviors as compared to quasi-cyclic interleaver.

The aim of this study is to perform a short term forecasting of dynamic radar clutter evolution (shape and position). This dynamic clutter, like thunderstorms, can be tracked by means of adapted algorithms based on the matching of the morphological skeleton polygonal approximation by relaxation labeling processes. The efficiency of our methods is demonstrated on meteorological radar images. The objective of this application is dedicated to civil traffic regulation according to severe atmospheric phenomenon, as described in Monnier & al. (1997). Through radar environment assessment, we observe radar clutter, like precipitation, submitted to very complex deformations that cannot be modelized easily. In Barbaresco (1999), we proposed a method based on morphological skeleton deformation to forecast the fluid topological evolution. This method allows management of very complex shapes evolution thanks to polygonal approximation of the skeletons and matching of their closed couple of elements by the relaxation algorithm. The skeleton simplifies shape analysis and deformation but also distinguishes clutter displacement and articulated deformation by skeleton matching from homothetic deformation (inflation and deflation) by medial axis (radius of maximal disks contained in the shape) tracking.
