The use of medical surveillance and predictive analysis is now more readily available through the intelligent use of modern technology with the use of software tools. Google Trends (GT) is an internet research tool initially utilised for the surveillance of the occurrence of influenza (Flu) internet search trends. Within the last 20 years the internet has become integral to health surveillance by reducing the time to the actual recognition of a disease outbreak, or the detection of a disease trend. GT primarily focused on detecting an outbreak of various strains of the Flu infecting different regions, sporadically or endemically, by monitoring the internet user seeking such medical information. It is currently utilised as an adjunct to the traditional surveillance tools used in traditional modern medicine. In this paper we have attempted to apply such search criteria using GT within a typical healthcare scenario or disease trend. We focused on the most common diseases found within the South African healthcare environment and presented the results accordingly. The results were found to be aligned to the results of traditional medical surveillance tools. The GT results presented in this paper may have similar applications in other areas of medicine and disease monitoring efforts in South Africa whereby the general population can derive meaningful insights of such disease trends. In addition there is a distinct awareness of this research tool, where many users are utilising the tool for healthcare searches which is becoming more evident in the medical literature. © 2019 IEEE.

Several studies have been conducted on the complexity of computer programs. Metrics of quantifying computer programs based on programming language, lines of code, or number of modules have been studied. One open problem is: how to measure the complexity of computer programming problems, based on the constructs in their solutions. In this paper, we present a tool called NOPCE (The NOvice Program Complexity Estimator) that measures the complexity of programming problems based on the constructs they contain. NOPCE takes any given novice program written in C# and computes an aggregated weight based on a look-up table of predefined weights for programming constructs. We have presented an evaluation that compares the human perception of problem complexity with that of NOPCE. Results show that, humans agreed with NOPCE on problem ranking, most of the time. This tool may find applications in computer education, where difficulty balancing of programming problems is paramount. © 2019 IEEE.

Students often struggle to communicate with their peers or lecturers about some of the issues they face during their time at university, either it be academic or personal. One of these issues is introductory programming, in instances were they choose to memorise code in order to pass rather than understanding how the logic behind the code actually works. Programming requires an understanding of how a certain logical flows and algorithm work. In this article, we discuss the difficulties that students face in introductory programming. We have also developed an interactive AI chatbot tool that students can interact with on some of the academic issues they may face. They can ask for advice on how to understand algorithms and what measures to take in order to understand programming logic and visualise metal models of the algorithms. The chatbot can also be used for personal advice. A survey that was conducted showed that there is a need for such a tool in aiding students through their university life. © 2019 IEEE.

Automatic Estimation of Sphere Centers from Images of Calibrated Cameras

Calibration of devices with different modalities is a key problem in robotic vision. Regular spatial objects, such as planes, are frequently used for this task. This paper deals with the automatic detection of ellipses in camera images, as well as to estimate the 3D position of the spheres corresponding to the detected 2D ellipses. We propose two novel methods to (i) detect an ellipse in camera images and (ii) estimate the spatial location of the corresponding sphere if its size is known. The algorithms are tested both quantitatively and qualitatively. They are applied for calibrating the sensor system of autonomous cars equipped with digital cameras, depth sensors and LiDAR devices. We propose two novel solvers for estimating the egomotion of a calibrated camera mounted to a moving vehicle from a single affine correspondence via recovering special homographies. For the first class of solvers, the sought plane is expected to be perpendicular to one of the camera axes. For the second class, the plane is orthogonal to the ground with unknown normal, e.g., it is a building facade. Both methods are solved via a linear system with a small coefficient matrix, thus, being extremely efficient. Both the minimal and over-determined cases can be solved by the proposed methods. They are tested on synthetic data and on publicly available real-world datasets. The novel methods are more accurate or comparable to the traditional algorithms and are faster when included in state of the art robust estimators. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Relative planar motion for vehicle-mounted cameras from a single affine correspondence

Two solvers are proposed for estimating the extrinsic camera parameters from a single affine correspondence assuming general planar motion. In this case, the camera movement is constrained to a plane and the image plane is orthogonal to the ground. The algorithms do not assume other constraints, e.g. the non-holonomic one, to hold. A new minimal solver is proposed for the semi-calibrated case, i.e. the camera parameters are known except a common focal length. Another method is proposed for the fully calibrated case. Due to requiring a single correspondence, robust estimation, e.g. histogram voting, leads to a fast and accurate procedure. The proposed methods are tested in our synthetic environment and on publicly available real datasets consisting of videos through tens of kilometers. They are superior to the state-of-the-art both in terms of accuracy and processing time. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Least-squares Optimal Relative Planar Motion for Vehicle-mounted Cameras

A new closed-form solver is proposed minimizing the algebraic error optimally, in the least squares sense, to estimate the relative planar motion of two calibrated cameras. The main objective is to solve the over-determined case, i.e., when a larger-than-minimal sample of point correspondences is given – thus, estimating the motion from at least three correspondences. The algorithm requires the camera movement to be constrained to a plane, e.g. mounted to a vehicle, and the image plane to be orthogonal to the ground.1 The solver obtains the motion parameters as the roots of a 6th degree polynomial. It is validated both in synthetic experiments and on publicly available real-world datasets that using the proposed solver leads to results superior to the state-of-the-art in terms of geometric accuracy with no noticeable deterioration in the processing time. In July 2023,the Center of Excellence in Respiratory Pathogens organized a two-day workshop on infectious diseases modelling and the lessons learnt from the Covid-19 *** report summarizes the rich discussions that occurred during the *** workshop participants discussed multisource data integration and highlighted the benefits of combining traditional surveillance with more novel data sources like mobility data,social media,and wastewater *** advancements were noted in the development of predictive models,with examples from various countries showcasing the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in detecting and monitoring disease *** role of open collaboration between various stakeholders in modelling was stressed,advocating for the continuation of such partnerships beyond the pandemic.A major gap identified was the absence of a common international framework for data sharing,which is crucial for global pandemic ***,the workshop underscored the need for robust,adaptable modelling frameworks and the integration of different data sources and collaboration across sectors,as key elements in enhancing future pandemic response and preparedness.

The general concept, called the formal framework of P systems provides a representation to study and analyze different variants of P systems. In this paper, two well-known models, P colonies and P systems with multi-stable catalysts are considered. We show that the obtained representations are identical, thus both models can be related using a bi-simulation. This fact opens new approaches for studying both P colonies and catalytic P systems. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG.
