In this paper we investigate phenomena of emergence of highly organized structures in networks. Our approach is based on Kolmogorov complexity of networks viewed as finite size strings. We apply this approach to study the emergence of simple organized, hierarchical, structures based on Sierpinski Graphs and we prove a Ramsey type theorem that bounds the number of vertices in Kolmogorov random graphs that contain Sierpinski Graphs as subgraphs. Moreover, we show that Sierpinski Graphs encompass close-knit relationships among their vertices that facilitate fast spread and learning of information. In the context of our work we can investigate questions related to the emergence or formation of suitably large groups of malicious individuals in a networks of interacting agents, which are able to take control of the networks. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In recent years, utilities require microgrids connected to the medium voltage distribution network to correct power factor at the point of common coupling (PCC). This paper proposes an approach based on the golden search method and the Fibonacci search method to define the photovoltaic inverters' power factor at the low voltage side of the network to achieve adequate power factor at the microgrid PCC (medium voltage). The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated using a simulation benchmark implemented using the OpenDSS COM interface in Matlab. This simulation is based on a real microgrid located at the Federal University of ABC in Santo André, Brazil, that includes nine photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 473 kVA. The results showed that utilizing the proposed approach in microgrids can avoid operating with low power factors. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper presents a study of solution strategies for the Cahn-Hilliard-Biot equations, a complex mathematical model for understanding flow in deformable porous media with changing solid phases. Solving the Cahn-Hilliard-Biot system poses significant challenges due to its coupled, nonlinear and non-convex nature. Recent advances in dimensionality reduction have achieved more accurate lower-dimensional embeddings of high-dimensional data. In addition to visualisation purposes, these embeddings can be used for downstream processing, including batch effect normalisation, clustering, community detection or trajectory inference. We use the notion of structure preservation at both local and global levels to create a deep learning model, based on a variational autoencoder (VAE) and the stochastic quartet loss from the SQuadMDS algorithm. Our encoder model, called GroupEnc, uses a 'group loss' function to create embeddings with less global structure distortion than VAEs do, while keeping the model parametric and the architecture flexible. We validate our approach using publicly available biological single-cell transcriptomic datasets, employing RNX curves for evaluation. © 2023, CC BY.

High node mobility, rapid topology changes provide specific challenges for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), which have an immediate impact on the routing protocols' performance. Traditional approaches, like the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol, provide proactive route management but fail to fully account for critical dynamic parameters like link stability, relative vehicle speed, node distance, and bandwidth availability. This work proposes a hybrid method combining OLSR with Q-learning to facilitate real-time adaptive routing. The model leverages dynamic metrics to proactively evaluate links while employing Q-learning to optimize routing decisions based on rewards computed from performance factors like delay, packet loss rate, and link duration. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms classic OLSR. The improvements include reduced packet loss rates, increased average throughput, lower average latency, and a reduction in control overhead. These findings confirm that integrating dynamic metrics and adaptive learning effectively addresses the challenges posed by VANETs.

A nonlinear singularly perturbed boundary value problem of the electron-hole plasma state predicting in the p-i-n diodes active region is considered. The search for solutions to the problem is carried out by the asymptotic method of boundary corrections. The decomposition of the original problem is carried out, the results are analyzed, and the existence of its asymptotic solutions is proved.

Robust width: A lightweight and certifiable adversarial defense

Deep neural networks are vulnerable to so-called adversarial examples: inputs which are intentionally constructed to cause the model to make incorrect predictions or classifications. Adversarial examples are often visually indistinguishable from natural data samples, making them hard to detect. As such, they pose significant threats to the reliability of deep learning systems. In this work, we study an adversarial defense based on the robust width property (RWP), which was recently introduced for compressed sensing. We show that a specific input purification scheme based on the RWP gives theoretical robustness guarantees for images that are approximately sparse. The defense is easy to implement and can be applied to any existing model without additional training or finetuning. We empirically validate the defense on ImageNet against L∞ perturbations at perturbation budgets ranging from 4/255 to 32/255. In the black-box setting, our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art, especially for large perturbations. In the white-box setting, depending on the choice of base classifier, we closely match the state of the art in robust ImageNet classification while avoiding the need for additional data, larger models or expensive adversarial training routines. The basic concepts and possibilities of solving the knapsack problem by the heuristic method are presented and substantiated. This problem is being actively researched;its popularity is due to the large number of applications. The main areas of application are in the planning and management of economic, production and transport systems. The implementing method and algorithm are described. The research consists in the development of a heuristic method for solving the knapsack problem, which gives approximate solutions to the problem. The problem considered is NP-complete, and there is no polynomial algorithm that solves it in a reasonable time. The computational characteristics of the algorithm obtained experimentally on various sets of generated initial data are presented in the paper. Recommendations for its practical application in real problems are given. © 2021 IEEE.
