Objective long-term health monitoring can improve the clinical management of several medical conditions ranging from cardiopulmonary diseases to motor disorders. In this paper, we present our work toward the development of a home-monitoring system. The system is currently used to monitor patients with Parkinson's disease who experience severe motor fluctuations. Monitoring is achieved using wireless wearable sensors whose data are relayed to a remote clinical site via a web-based application. The work herein presented shows that wearable sensors combined with a web-based application provide reliable quantitative information that can be used for clinical decision making.

The principal objective of this work consists in reducing the chattering phenomenon and ensuring more improvement of performances the proposed control scheme especially ensuring the decoupling between the control of the two principle variables of the motor “speed and flux” and also the system's robustness towards parameter's variations and external perturbations. In fact and as a first step a control scheme based on the combination of feedback linearization control is first proposed. Then, and in order to ensure more robustness of the process towards parameter's variations and external perturbation...ect, sliding mode controllers are used. These controllers are based on a piecewise function for smoothing in order to reduce the effect of the chattering phenomenon which is harmful of the actuator. However, this smooth function is relied closely to the upper bound of uncertainties, which include parameter variations and external disturbances. So, fuzzy sliding mode controllers are investigated to solve this difficulty based on the method introduced by Ben-Galia et al. By replacing the gain and the signum of the attractivity function of sliding mode controllers by fuzzy maps. However, it seems that this technique couldn't reduced the chattering considerably which let the authors to propose another type of controllers based on Gaussian Radial Basis Function Neural Network (GRBFNN) which revealed some very interesting features and prove that such controllers are efficients to attempt the required objectives.

We employ a parallel, three-dimensional level-set code to simulate the dynamics of isolated dislocation lines and loops in an obstacle-rich environment. This system serves as a convenient prototype of those in which extended, one-dimensional objects interact with obstacles and the out-of-plane motion of these objects is key to understanding their pinning-depinning behavior. In contrast to earlier models of dislocation motion, we incorporate long-ranged interactions among dislocation segments and obstacles to study the effect of climb on dislocation dynamics in the presence of misfitting penetrable obstacles/solutes, as embodied in an effective climb mobility. Our main observations are as follows. First, increasing climb mobility leads to more effective pinning by the obstacles, implying increased strengthening. Second, decreasing the range of interactions significantly reduces the effect of climb. The dependence of the critical stress on obstacle concentration and misfit strength is also explored and compared with existing models. In particular, our results are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the Friedel-Suzuki theory. Finally, the limitations inherent in the simplified model employed here, including the neglect of some lattice effects and the use of a coarse-grained climb mobility, are discussed.

Quantum parameter estimation has many applications, from gravitational wave detection to quantum key distribution. The most commonly used technique for this type of estimation is quantum filtering, using only past observations. We present the first experimental demonstration of quantum smoothing, a time-symmetric technique that uses past and future observations, for quantum parameter estimation. We consider both adaptive and nonadaptive quantum smoothing, and show that both are better than their filtered counterparts. For the problem of estimating a stochastically varying phase shift on a coherent beam, our theory predicts that adaptive quantum smoothing (the best scheme) gives an estimate with a mean-square error up to 22 times smaller than nonadaptive filtering (the standard quantum limit). The experimentally measured improvement is 2.24±0.14.

An increasing number of households are equipped with a large number of TV sets and more and more of them are large highresolution displays. Furthermore, we see the integration of web browsing and email functionalities in these devices, which are then often controlled via a wireless mouse and keyboard. The latter were rather designed for the usage on a desk, rather then by a person sitting on their sofa in a living room. Therefore, this paper investigates the usage of a PDA, as a replacement which can be used for controlling a remote cursor and for text input. The results of the experimental comparison of these input devices show, as expected, the superiority of mouse and keyboard (as the study participants were very experienced with them). Surprising results were the task completion time and usability satisfaction when using the mobile device. These results show the applicability of using a mobile device for controlling an application on a remote screen. Using a mobile device provides the advantages that every person can e.g. use their own mobile phone or that these devices can be used in multi-user scenarios.

This paper presents a review of contributions to the Higher Education Academy’s Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Databases (TLAD) workshops, where academics from the international community have gathered to present, discuss, disseminate, as well as find novel, interesting and useful techniques for improving their teaching, learning and assessment experiences of databases. Particularly, this paper reviews the teaching issues where the academics emphasize areas such as the teaching of the theoretical aspects initially to enable the students to grasp the important concepts and then the practical tools that should be introduced in the database modules. It also reviews learning issues including teamwork and interactive learning. Finally, assessment issues have been discussed which focus on the approaches that these academics use to assess their students.
