This paper presents an enhancement of the Nimrod/O optimization tool by interfacing DEMO, an external multiobjective optimization algorithm. DEMO is a variant of differential evolution – an algorithm that has attained much popularity in the research community, and this work represents the first time that true multiobjective optimizations have been performed with Nimrod/O. A modification to the DEMO code enables multiple objectives to be evaluated concurrently. With Nimrod/O's support for parallelism, this can reduce the wall-clock time significantly for compute intensive objective function evaluations. We describe the usage and implementation of the interface and present two optimizations. The first is two-objective mathematical function in which the Pareto front is successfully found after only 30 generations. The second test case is the three-objective shape optimization of a rib-reinforced wall bracket using the Finite Element software, Code_Aster. The interfacing of the already successful packages of Nimrod/O and DEMO yields a solution that we believe can benefit a wide community, both industrial and academic.

Computer science educators are uniquely positioned to promote greater awareness of Green computing, using the academic setting to encourage environmentally conscious use of technology. This paper reports on practical techniques that can engage faculty and students, enabling Green computing to be integrated into the classroom and research laboratory. Analysis and empirical evaluation of each reported technique is given, comparing the efficacy of each in terms of energy, environmental and financial cost savings. These results are provided as technological and economic evidence for the benefits of "Going Green," and to promote education in Green computing in the classroom, department and research lab.

The workshop on Mobile Interaction with the Real World (MIRW 2009) will invite papers which focus on new mobile and wearable input and output interfaces which allow simpler and straightforward interactions with mobile services and applications. An inherit problem of current mobile devices are their limited output and input capabilities. This workshop continues a successful series of workshops (2006-2008) that focus on new approaches to overcome these issues. Examples are the usage of external visual interfaces (e.g. projector phones, public displays, interactive surfaces) and additional input capabilities (e.g. gestures, on-body interfaces, pointing) and innovative feedback mechanisms (e.g. tactile feedback). The workshop combines technical presentations with the presentation of prototypes and focused discussions to drive interaction between participants.

With the increase in society's dependence on IT communication systems, the need for dependable, trustable, robust and secure adaptive systems becomes ever more acute. Modern autonomic message-oriented middleware platforms have stringent requirements for self-healing, adapting, evolving, fault-tolerance, security and active vulnerability assessment, especially when the internal working model of a system and the environmental influences on the system are uncertain during run-time. In this paper we present an adaptive and evolving security (AES), and an adaptive trust management (ATM) approach to such autonomic messaging middleware systems, an approach that learns, anticipates, evolves and adapts to a changing environment at run-time in the face of changing threats. The methodology used in this research is partly analytical and partly experimental. This involves analysis of how the principles of AES and ATM can be applied to the environment resulting in the development of theoretical models which are then tested in practice by prototyping.

Localization is a fundamental task in mobile robotics and in indoor environments we can use various sensors to solve this problem. In the Intelligent Space environment we can use laser range finders or ultrasonic positioning systems to localize and track mobile robots. Nevertheless, our final goal is to substitute these sensors and accomplish this task using just cameras. In this paper, we show the feasibility of determining the robot's location based on the images received from a single camera. In our experimental room we used a surveillance camera, which can be controlled to pan/tilt in order to change the point of view. The camera had been mounted on the ceiling and six preset positions were selected to cover the whole area. The object recognition is based on colour space filtering and contour detection. Finally, the contours of the detected objects are transformed from the image space to the world coordinate system and the polygons are reduced to simpler ones. The system is able to detect not only the position of the objects, but their orientations.

The first cluster‐based public computing for Monte Carlo simulation in Indonesia is introduced. The system has been developed to enable public to perform Monte Carlo simulation on a parallel computer through an integrated and user friendly dynamic web interface. The beta version, so called publicMC@BATAN, has been released and implemented for internal users at the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN). In this paper the concept and architecture of publicMC@BATAN are presented.

This paper presents a new approach to enhance speech based on a distributed microphone network. Each microphone is used to simultaneously classify the input into either one of the noise types or as speech. For enhancing the speech signal a modified spectral subtraction approach is used that utilize the sound information of the entire network to update the noise model even during speech. This improves the reduction of the ambient noise, especially for non-stationary noise types such as street or beach noise. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

In order to use software processes for a spectrum of projects they are described in a generic way. Due to the uniqueness of software development, processes have to be adapted to project specific needs to be effectively applicable in projects. Siemens AG has started research projects aiming to improve this instantiation of processes. A system supporting project managers in instantiation of software processes at Siemens AG is being developed. It aims not only to execute instantiation decision made by humans but to automatically restore correctness of the resulting process.
