The growing spread of fake news on social network is a major scourge in society. To combat this problem, many studies have focused on different aspects to automatically detect fake news on social networks using artificial intelligence, especially Machine Learning. In the present work, to understand the current state of existing proposals, we conducted a systematic literature review. We propose to organize this literature in the light of a taxonomy of approaches. © 2024 IEEE Computer Society. All rights reserved.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are technologies impacting our lives. The systems learn from existing datasets that record past human decisions. Their performance is measured in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall for reproducing already-known results. Understanding the system’s rationale is crucial to check for bias and accept such technology. Explainable AI (XAI) is the area devoted to opening the AI black box, and designing guidelines to build explainable AI systems. Nevertheless, it is important to understand the user’s needs for these explanations. This paper presents an investigation of the usefulness of XAI systems in the field of cancer diagnosis from the domain expert’s (oncologist) perspective. The main findings suggest domain experts (1) understood the outcomes of the XAI systems; (2) considered XAI outcomes as informative, rather than explanatory; (3) would like to go beyond the fixed presented perspective; and (4) missed the causal relation that would reveal the system’s rationale.

Software processes improvement (SPI) based on maturity models is a well-researched theme regarding aspects such as adoption benefits, process definition, and automated support environments. However, few studies address the reasons that can lead an organization to abandon SPI. It is vital for organizations that seek to improve their processes to know what can negatively influence SPI and, thus, take actions to mitigate the risk of SPI failure, avoiding the loss of effort in the implementation stage. We present a study’s results to understand how abandonment occurs in software process improvement programs after successful assessments based on maturity models. We conducted case studies in four Brazilian software companies. The results show that SPI initiatives failed because of both internal factors (people, SPI project management, organizational aspects, and processes) and external factors (country economic crisis, outsourcing, and governmental political influence) to the organizational context.

Over the years, several Parallel Programming Models (PPMs) have supported the abstraction of programming complexity for parallel computer systems. However, few studies aim to evaluate the productivity reached by such abstractions since this is a complex task that involves human beings. There are several studies to develop predictive methods to estimate the effort required to develop software applications. In order to evaluate the reliability of such metrics, it is necessary to assess the accuracy in different programming paradigms. In this work, we used the data of an experiment conducted with beginners in parallel programming to determine the effort required for implementing stream parallelism using FastFlow, SPar, and TBB. Our results show that some traditional software effort estimation models, such as COCOMO II, fall short. In contrast, Planning Poker could contribute toward a parallel-aware effort model.

English learning comprises the development of four abilities: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Commonly, English teachers use songs to develop students' listening because it provides a fun approach for improving vocabulary and perceiving different accents. However, every time a teacher needs to prepare a listening lesson using songs, s/he needs to search for songs that contain the words that are being studied in that lesson, and also download and edit the lyrics, substituting the words by blank spaces to be filled by the students while they listen to the music. This paper presents the application of Information Retrieval (IR) techniques to index and retrieve songs according to a set of intended words, besides a module that prepares the songs for listening lessons, substituting the terms by blank spaces. Results reveal that the tool is well-succeeded to provide the aforementioned functionalities. Moreover, a teacher used the tool in the context of her English class, approving the solution provided and contributing to reduce the effort for preparing a pedagogical activity for a listening lesson.

Background: Aligning IT to business goals is a top priority for CIOs. However, managers in the IT Service Industry face difficulties to define and monitor IT service goals and strategies aligned to business goals. Goal: We carried out a study to investigate how IT service managers define, measure and monitor IT service goals and strategies, and the difficulties they have faced in this context. Method: We interviewed five IT service managers from four service provider organizations and used coding procedures to analyze the collected data. Results: We obtained information about how organizations define, measure and evaluate IT service goals and strategies and, from the difficulties reported by the managers, we identified 19 pitfalls. Conclusions: By analyzing the relations among the pitfalls, we defined five hypotheses: (i) lack of awareness and transparency on the relationship between strategies and goals may harm the achievement of IT service goals and strategies, (ii) lack of proper support to execute measurement inhibits reevaluation and adjustment of strategies and indicators related to IT service goals, (iii) lack of motivation can jeopardize decision-making by IT service managers, (iv) conflicts between strategies may harm IT service goals achievement, and (v) lack of proper support to execute IT service management initiatives may harm IT service goals achievement. © 2018 ACM.

Data stream mining is the process of extracting knowledge from massive real-time sequence of data items arriving at a very high data rate. It has several practical applications, such as user behavior analysis, software testing and market research. However, the large amount of data generated may offer challenges to process and analyze data at nearly real time. In this paper, we first present the MFI-TransSW+ algorithm, an optimized version of MFI-TransSW algorithm that efficiently processes clickstreams, that is, data streams where the data items are the pages of a Web site. Then, we outline the implementation of a news articles recommender system, called ClickRec, to demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the proposed algorithm. Finally, we describe experiments, conducted with real world data, which show that MFI-TransSW+ outperforms the original algorithm, being up to two orders of magnitude faster when processing clickstreams. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

There is no longer any question as to whether or not IT can deliver value to the organizations: This is already considered a fact. IT value is one of the most researched topics, but little is said about what is "value", most of the research is about IT investments evaluation methods and their classifications. We lack a better understanding of what IT value is, not a single definition but what are the elements that contribute to the IT value. Risk analysis is a complex and critical activity in various contexts, ranging from strategic planning to IT systems operation. Given its complexity, several Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks and modeling languages have been developed to help analysts in representing and analyzing risks. Yet, the notion of risk remains overloaded and conceptually unclear in most of them. In this paper, we investigate the real-world semantics underlying risk-related constructs in one of such approaches, namely ArchiMate's Risk and Security Overlay (RSO). We perform this investigation by means of ontological analysis to reveal semantic limitations in the overlay, such as ambiguity and missing constructs. Building on the results of this analysis, we propose a well-founded redesign of the risk modeling aspects of the RSO.
