This paper proposes an approach to the Simulated Annealing (SA)-based optimization of fuzzy models for magnetic levitation systems. The unstable and nonlinear processes are first linearized at nine operating points, and next stabilized by a state feedback control system (SFCS) structure. The Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models are obtained by the modal equivalence principle in terms of placing the local SFCS state-space models in the rule consequents. The optimization problems are defined aiming the minimization of objective functions expressed as the squared modeling errors, and the variables of these functions are a part of the parameters of the input membership functions. SA algorithms are involved in solving the optimization problems which give optimal T-S fuzzy models. A set of real-time experimental results validates the fuzzy modeling approach and the new optimal T-S fuzzy models for magnetic levitation system with two electromagnets laboratory equipment.

Since license plate character recognition plays a very important role in vehicle control, such as electronic toll collection (ETC) for highways and management for parking lots, the cost of management can be reduced and the implementing efficiency can be promoted by automatizing license plate character recognition. As the technology of image processing, classifiers, and computational speed on computer advances, we adopt Sobel operators to detect the boundaries of objects in order to extract license plate regions. After extracting license plate regions, we segment corresponding characters and then standardize these characters in order to find out the features of characters, and finally use the classifiers of support vector machine (SVM) and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) to train and then recognize characters. Experimental results show that classifiers and features are closely linked, and KNN is more appropriate for block-binary-pixelsum features than SVM, and its recognition rate is up to 98.51 % on average.

The precise identification of neuronal currents via Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings is an important aspect in clinical practice and strongly depends on the accuracy of the corresponding forward problem. In addition, the precision of the EEG forward model is closely connected to the existence of a volume conductor model as realistic as possible. In this paper, the impact of geometric variations of the head on the measured electric potential has been studied by means of a homogeneous spherical conductor. In the case where the activated region is situated in the vicinity of the deformation, the calculated potential values show a slight increase. On the other hand, for neuronal currents away from the deformation no influence upon the surface electric measurements is observed.

We present a three-dimensional coupled surface graph cut algorithm for carotid wall segmentation from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Using cost functions that highlight both inner and outer vessel wall borders, the method combines the search for both borders into a single graph cut optimization. Our approach requires little user interaction and can robustly segment the carotid artery bifurcation. Experiments on 32 carotid arteries from 16 patients show good agreement between manual segmentation performed by an expert and our method. The mean relative area of overlap is more than 85% for both lumen and outer vessel wall. In addition, differences in measured wall thickness with respect to the manual annotations were smaller than the in-plane pixel size. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents a natural user interface system based on multimodal human computer interaction, which operates as an intermediate module between the user and the operating system. The aim of this work is to demonstrate a multimodal system which gives users the ability to interact with desktop applications using face, objects, voice and gestures. These human behaviors constitute the input qualifiers to the system. Microsoft Kinect multi-sensor was utilized as input device in order to succeed the natural user interaction, mainly due to the multimodal capabilities offered by this device. We demonstrate scenarios which contain all the functions and capabilities of our system from the perspective of natural user interaction.

This paper proposes two energy-aware algorithms exploited for optimal resources administration and maximum energy conservation of secondary communication nodes in a centralized cognitive radio network architecture. The proposed algorithms optimally enable efficient TV White Spaces exploitation, through a radio spectrum broker that administrates the resources trading process, based on real-time secondary spectrum market policy. In addition, both algorithms adopt a joint path lifetime and utility maximization scheme, which encompasses a capacity-aware policy for achieving minimum energy consumption and reliability during the resource sharing process. Validity of both algorithms is verified through several sets of extended experimental/simulation tests, carried out under controlled conditions.

This paper proposes a routing protocol enriched with an assigning mechanism and a capacity-aware scheme, enabling for efficient data flow coordination and energy conservation, among networking nodes with heterogeneous radio spectrum availability in ad-hoc cognitive radio networks. The proposed assigning mechanism is able to effectively determine efficient routing paths in a distributed networking architecture, designed based on a simulation scenario, where networking nodes operate over television white spaces (TVWS). The main target of routing in this simulation scenario is to provide optimal, high throughput data transfer, by efficiently selecting the best routing paths. Towards enabling Energy-Efficiency in the proposed research approach, a Backward Traffic Difference (BTD) estimation methodology is exploited. The novelty adopted in the proposed capacity-aware scheme arises by the ability to utilize different assignments of sleep-wake schedules, depending on different incoming traffic that each networking node receives through time. The validity of the proposed energy efficient routing protocol is verified, by conducting experimental simulations and obtaining performance evaluation results. Simulation results validate routing protocol efficiency for minimizing energy consumption, maximizing resources exchange between networking nodes and minimizing routing delays in ad-hoc cognitive radio networks.

This paper proposes an energy-efficient routing scheme that enables energy conservation and efficient data flow coordination, among communication nodes with heterogeneous spectrum availability in distributed cognitive radio networks. Effective routing scheme operation, as a matter of maximum energy conservation and traffic manipulation is obtained, by utilizing backward traffic activity evaluation, developed based on a simulation scenario. This simulation scenario includes a number of secondary communication nodes, operating over television white spaces (TVWS), under "spectrum of commons" regulation policy. The validity of the proposed energy-efficient routing scheme is verified, by conducting experimental simulations and obtaining performance evaluation results. Simulation results validated its efficiency for minimizing energy consumption and maximizing resources exchange among secondary communication nodes.

Searches are performed for resonant and nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the γγbb¯ final state using 20 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A 95% confidence level upper limit on the cross section times branching ratio of nonresonant production is set at 2.2 pb, while the expected limit is 1.0 pb. The difference derives from a modest excess of events, corresponding to 2.4 standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis. The limit observed in the search for a narrow X→hh resonance ranges between 0.7 and 3.5 pb as a function of the resonance mass.
