This paper proposes a generic design for 3D model retrieval. It has been developed in cooperation with EADS, which deals with computer Aided Design / computer Aided engineering (below CAD/CAE) data through the product life cycle. Sharing these models with users across the enterprise is a challenging task. CAD/CAE models may be hundreds of megabytes large and stored in proprietary formats. Browsing and previewing this data efficiently requires new tools. One way to leverage the collaboration in and outside of CAD domains is to offer through a repository an access to a neutral 3D data format. Also functionalities for semantic enrichment of 3D models, for the retrieval of context sensitive information and for 3D model retrieval based on 3D similarity search and CBIR techniques should be provided.

The field of Statistics is a conceptually rich domain where information is complex, huge in volume, and highly valuable and critical for Governmental institutes. The daily production of statistical information increases exponentially worldwide, making the processing of all this information a very difficult and time - consuming task. Therefore, efficient search, filtering and browsing techniques are needed to access and process statistical data in an effective way. We present semantically enhanced search approach to enhance e-Govemment searching services. We evaluate our proposals on the case of Intrastat, that is the method of collecting information and producing statistics on the export and import of goods between Member States of the European Union (EU), providing added - value web search services. We employ Semantic Web technologies to create an intelligent search engine based on modeling the systems' electronic catalogue using the OWL ontology language, combined with AJAX techniques for usability richness and responsiveness. We present a search tool based on these technologies, that consists of a) our novel ontology for the EU Combined Nomenclature codes serving as a knowledge base, b)a semantically enhanced search and recommendation module that improves the quality of the results and c) a "Search as you type" visualization and navigation module to provide a usable interface to be used in navigation and search.

The equipment used for radiation hazard evaluation usually is based in measuring the total electric field strength over a frequency bandwidth of interest. However, because of the fact that the defined Reference Levels (RL) according to the ICNIRP Guidelines or other specific legislation are frequency dependent, the compliance of a particular RF or microwave transmitter and its contribution to the total received electromagnetic energy at a given measurement location is not easily identifiable. On the other hand, narrowband measurements can be used to determine the incident electric field from every single transmitter. However, in such a case, a large number of measurements are required in order to estimate its contribution to the total electric field strength and consequently to check for compliance with the legislation limits, due to the fact that directional antennas should be used. In this work a method is presented for determining: the total electric field from a particular direction to a specific point of a measurement location (e.g. in the vicinity of a mobile base station), the angle of maximum incident electric field and the total exposure quotient from the sources laying at that particular location in a frequency band of interest.

The Minimum Cost Network Flow Problem (MCNFP) constitutes perhaps the most important of the research area of Network Optimization. Recently a new category of algorithms for the MCNFP have been developed. These algorithms belong to a special “exterior type” simplex category and they feature significant tree modifications. This paper presents a new didactic tool for the teaching of this type of algorithms. The proposed educational software can be used in courses like “Graph Theory” or “Combinatorial Optimization”. This tool has been implemented using the Java Programming language and it is platform independed. It constitutes a friendly application, for the instructor, as also for the novice student. Furthermore, its use is analytically shown through an illustrative example. Benefits and drawbacks are thoroughly described in order to support the significance of this visualization tool in computer-aided education and also possible future work is discussed.

The first step in order to obtain good hand prosthesis consists in designing a model, based on the natural one and capable to reflect its architecture and functions. This is the reason why the researchers all over the world give a lot of attention to modeling the human hand. There are quite few solutions for human hand prosthesis, but the main setbacks are that each of them is too complex to be afforded by the majority of patients (especially the ones in underdeveloped countries) and none of them can perform as many tasks as the natural model. Having this in mind, we determined the kinematical and dynamical models of the human hand, to obtain a model as close as possible to the natural one. We realized, also, that if we limit our model's capabilities to the most important function of the hand, namely prehension (considering that the vast majority of potential patients have one good hand for performing delicate actions), then we can obtain an affordable human hand prosthesis with grabbing capabilities, which can help impaired people to manage through most of the daily activities. We propose a hydraulic based solution to actuate our hand prosthesis, which allows us to believe that our model is one of the simpler, yet reliable and non-expensive, among the specific research in the field.

This paper provides a strategy for perimeter protection using sensor networks with hardware and analytical redundancy. The sensor network reliability is augmented using a knowledge-based system, which implicates the analysis of the trustworthiness of each sensor. For this, we used two stratagems: one that relies on hardware redundancy based on the Confidence Weighted Voting Algorithm and one that relies on analytical redundancy based on a neural perceptron predictor that uses past and present values obtained from neighbouring nodes. This solution can be also a way to discover the malfunctioning nodes that were subjects of an attack and it is localized at the base station level being suitable even for large-scale sensor networks.

engineering for development, production, and other product related company activities are being organized in virtual systems for lifecycle management of product data. This new age of engineering is a result of the continuous development for step-by-step moving of product design, analysis and other production engineering activities from conventional environments to modeling environments during the eighties and nineties. However, more developments were needed in knowledge based decision assistance in order to realize modeling of human intent, increasingly complex product structures, and efficient communication of product data. In recent years, a great change of engineering methodology and software produced program products in knowledge technology and advanced local and global communication. Group work of engineers is increasingly organized around special portals for engineering on the Internet. Although intensive research activities produced outstanding methods in knowledge-based solutions for engineering, these methods have not widespread in the industrial modeling practice. This paper attempts to evaluate the possibility that recent communication and knowledge intensive engineering modeling can be developed into communication and knowledge intensive virtual space technology. Paper starts with a discussion on integrated application of different groups of product modeling techniques. Following this, methods are evaluated for the management of product data (PDM). Next section emphasizes aspects, contexts, and intents as primary issues in modeling for relationships in product data and decisions by engineers. Finally, methods for the management of engineering activities for lifecycle of products are summarized, considering communities of engineers around Internet portals.
