The problem of finding a path with two additive constraints is called a multi-constrained path (MCP) problem in the literature. In this paper, we explore the MCP problem based on the idea of single mixed weight. Given two infeasible paths, it can be theoretically proved that a better path can possibly be found if we choose an appropriate parameter to construct the mixed weight. An approximate algorithm is thus proposed to solve the MCP problem. A large number of experiments on networks of different sizes demonstrate that this algorithm can make a correct judgment whether there is a feasible path or not with a very high probability. On the other hand, the time complexity of this algorithm is very small since it only needs to execute Dijkstra's algorithm a limited number of times even for a network of relatively large size.

Recent advances in electronic technology integration coupled with increasing needs for more services in portable communications favors the development of high performance dual-mode terminals. We present the complete architecture implementation of the GMSK/GFSK modulator/demodulator including the FIR filters design. The main features of the modulator/demodulator and the architectural implementation of FIR filters are described. The interface with ASPIS processor and A/D & D/A converters is also described in detail manner. The whole architecture of the modulator/demodulator was described by VHDL hardware language, synthesised and implemented in Xilinx environment.

We present a new image sequence segmentation method which combines both spatial and temporal information in a multiresolution framework. A region growing technique in a multiresolution scheme outputs an over-segmented partition of the image scene. Pure temporal information is collected for each region using a feature extraction/feature tracking technique. Motion information is further processed in a pyramidal robust motion estimation scheme, in order to calculate more complex motion parameters for each region. Regions obtained from the first step are clustered according to their motion models. This ensures that rigid objects with luminance discontinuities can be segmented correctly. The method has been successfully tested in real imagery and typical examples are presented.

This paper considers the network design and control for multipoint-to-multipoint communications. We propose a new routing control method which includes the member connection method and the route setup algorithm. The former implies that each member has its own route to send information to other members. Thus, it can avoid traffic concentration in a particular route. Further, in the route setup algorithm, all routes are generated in parallel, by adding links which have lower cost and lower load one by one, based on grouping by the number of destination nodes on the route. An interesting feature of the proposed algorithm is that every route can be established with a unified algorithm, even when newcomers join ongoing communications. In addition to the above method, we also propose a network design algorithm. It can make the proposed routing control method more effective. This work presents a new approach toward digital repetitive control. This approach employs a periodically time-varying compensator for the design of repetitive control. This yields extra freedom in designing this class of systems. This freedom can be effectively used to increase robustness in the design. An example is given to illustrate the result.

A new method for estimating 3D motion parameters from point correspondences is presented in this paper. The problem formulation leads to the solution of an overdetermined linear system of equations. The total least squares (TLS) method is found to be the most suitable one for estimating the solution since our model includes noise both in the observation data and in the system matrix. The translation parameters are obtained immediately from the above solution whereas the rotation parameters are estimated from the solution of another TLS problem. Tests of our method on artificial data and on real images show its robustness against Gaussian additive noise and against digitalization noise introduced by finite pixel resolution.

This paper describes the application of an artificial neural network (ANN) technique together with a feature extraction technique, viz., the wavelet transform, for the classification of EEG signals. Three classes of EEG signals were used: normal, schizophrenia (SCH), and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The architecture of the artificial neural network used in the classification is a three-layered feedforward network which implements the backpropagation of error learning algorithm. After training, the network with wavelet coefficients was able to correctly classify over 66% of the normal class and 71% of the schizophrenia class of EEGs. The wavelet transform thus provides a potentially powerful technique for preprocessing EEG signals prior to classification.

We present a new class of discrete chaotic systems (i.e. chaotic maps) that can effectively encrypt information. The nonlinearity of these systems is achieved by designing proper piecewise linear functions and by using modulo operations. The chaotic maps are used as pseudo-noise generators and as the synchronization mechanism of a secure spread-spectrum communication system design. The potential for automatic synchronization, the lack of periodicity and the extremely large parameter spaces that our chaotic maps exhibit offer great advantages over the traditional linear feedback shift registers pseudo-noise generators for spread spectrum system design.

A critical issue in understanding high speed flows is the study of shock waves. The paper summarizes our research on techniques for the detection and visualization of shock waves occuring in simulations of three dimensional flows on unstructured grids. Detection algorithms based on Mach number, density gradient and directional derivatives are compared using a data set from calculations of a transonic flow with a weak double shock around an airfoil. Both surface and volume rendering techniques are used to display the shocks. The issues in this research area are very much like those occurring in medical imaging. Since the data themselves (in this case the results of the fluid dynamics simulation) are intrinsically low resolution and noisy, properly extracting and visualizing the shock is very difficult. In this environment, blurry, low resolution techniques, like the splatting volume rendering, seem to do rather well. More complex schemes, using sophisticated numerical shock detectors coupled with polygon rendering, produce visually sharper shocks, but also introduce "graphics artifacts," which complicate understanding of the flow physics. On the other hand, visualization results produced with techniques like splatting are, in effect, relying more on the human visual system to compensate for limited resolution in the simulation.
