In this paper, we consider an indoor visible light communication (VLC) system with multiple "white" light emitting diodes serving to form overlapping wireless communication cells. In order to maintain seamless connectivity to mobile users, a handover procedure should be implemented. In particular, practical conditions such as blockages due to obstacles inside the room environment and the mobility of users can affect direct VLC connectivity. The use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in optical wireless systems allows to exploit non-direct connectivity links, thus providing efficient communication links. In this paper, we present a proactive handover mechanism that exploits the presence of a RIS, in order to redirect the communication links in case of blockages. The proposed approach has been implemented both in hard and soft modes and assessed in terms of achievable data rate and handover latency for a user walking in a given reference room at different user speeds and blockage conditions. Our presented results and comparisons with conventional handover methods (i.e., without RIS) are helpful in showing the superiority of the presented algorithm.

Banking produces extensive and diverse data, so a clustering process is needed to understand customer behavior patterns and transactions more effectively. This clustering has been widely utilized with the K-Means algorithm due to its simplicity and efficiency. However, this algorithm is limited in determining the optimal cluster center, affecting the accuracy of the clustering results. This study proposes applying two metaheuristic algorithms, Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), as additional solutions combined with K-Means. These two algorithms were chosen because of their ability to find global solutions and convergence speed to handle large and complex banking data. The results show the superiority of IWOKM compared to PSOKM in terms of SSE and DBI. From the SSE value, IWOKM produces a lower value (3029.77), which indicates that this method is better at minimizing clustering errors and producing more accurate clustering than PSOKM (80007.09). From the DBI value, IWOKM also produces a better value (1.6684) than PSOKM (1.6782), which shows that the clusters produced by IWOKM are more compact and more separated. However, in terms of computation time, PSOKM is more efficient, with a faster average computation time. Although IWOKM produces better clustering quality, PSOKM offers advantages in terms of processing speed. This finding confirms that the selection of the IWO algorithm is more appropriate for use on datasets with characteristics such as the German Credit Dataset.

Vehicle positioning algorithms are essential for improving traffic management and safety by accurately locating vehicles in real-time, and, thus, minimizing congestion and accidents. They also support the development of advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles, relying on precise positioning data for safe navigation. One of the solutions involves using image processing algorithms, which can have two approaches. One approach is decentralized, in which each vehicle performs its own computing steps and determines its position concerning the other nearby vehicles. The second approach, proposed in this paper, is centralized, where each vehicle sends data to a server that uses cloud computing to process all the data in real-time. As such, vehicles can create a more comprehensive view of the driving conditions in the area by using either of these two approaches, which can help them anticipate potential hazards and make more informed decisions.

Generative, pre-trained transformers (GPTs, a type of "Foundation Model") have reshaped natural language processing (NLP) through their versatility in diverse downstream tasks. However, their potential extends far beyond NLP. This paper provides a software utility to help realize this potential, extending the applicability of GPTs to continuous-time sequences of complex events with internal dependencies, such as medical record datasets. Despite their potential, the adoption of foundation models in these domains has been hampered by the lack of suitable tools for model construction and evaluation. To bridge this gap, we introduce Event Stream GPT (ESGPT), an open source library designed to streamline the end-to-end process for building GPTs for continuous-time event sequences. ESGPT allows users to (1) build flexible, foundation-model scale input datasets by specifying only a minimal configuration file, (2) leverage a Hugging Face compatible modeling API for GPTs over this modality that incorporates intra-event causal dependency structures and autoregressive generation capabilities, and (3) evaluate models via standardized processes that can assess few and even zero-shot performance of pre-trained models on user-specified fine-tuning tasks.

With the rising acceptance of virtual network functions (VNFs) as a replacement for traditional network functions, the optimal placement of VNFs has become a crucial task for ensuring constant performance within constrained resources. This research investigates the challenge of mapping and scheduling VNFs as a multi-objective optimization problem. The state-of-the-art methods have focused on optimizing the mapping or scheduling of VNFs while considering one or two objectives continuously. In this study, we aim to optimize two objectives: minimizing the link capacity cost and maximizing the average resource utilization of each virtual machine. To address this problem, an adaptation of the NSGA-III optimization algorithm is proposed and thoroughly evaluated through a set of experiments. In terms of objective values, the results outlined that the proposed method outperformed the other methods of comparison by a significant margin. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A serious, all-encompassing, and deadly cancer that affects every part of the body is skin cancer. The most prevalent causes of skin lesions are UV radiation, which can damage human skin, and moles. If skin cancer is discovered early, it may be adequately treated. In order to diagnose skin lesions with less effort, dermatologists are increasingly turning to machine learning (ML) techniques and computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems. This paper proposes a computerized method for multiclass lesion classification using a fusion of optimal deep-learning model features. The dataset used in this work, ISIC2018, is imbalanced; therefore, augmentation is performed based on a few mathematical operations. After that, two pre-trained deep learning models (DarkNet-19 and MobileNet-V2) have been fine-tuned and trained on the selected dataset. After training, features are extracted from the average pool layer and optimized using a hybrid firefly optimization technique. The selected features are fused in two ways: (i) original serial approach and (ii) proposed threshold approach. Machine learning classifiers are used to classify the chosen features at the end. Using the ISIC2018 dataset, the experimental procedure produced an accuracy of 89.0%. Whereas, 87.34, 87.57, and 87.45 are sensitivity, precision, and F1 score respectively. At the end, comparison is also conducted with recent techniques, and it shows the proposed method shows improved accuracy along with other performance measures.

Organisations and users have been experiencing significant rises in cyberattacks and their severity, which means that they require a greater awareness and understanding of the anatomy of cyberattacks, to prevent and mitigate their effects. In analysing cyberattacks, there are a number of different approaches that may be used to assess their potential risks and effects. However, these are utilised in specific types of cyberattacks and their analysis, which means they cannot be applied in every situation or cyberattack. Moreover, several other factors may influence the decision to use these approaches, such as cost, complexity, skills and adaptability. As a result, continuous research to design and enhance these approaches is undertaken to produce a generic, cost-effective, easy and adaptable approach. This paper presents one such approach to assess the risk of cyberattacks utilising an attack tree and fuzzy logic. An attack tree is a systematic and illustrative method for describing an attack on a system and analysing its taxonomy and other aspects. Subsequently, the probability and risk of each leaf node in the attack tree are calculated using the proposed formulas. Finally, fuzzy logic enables decision making based on imprecise data and heuristics to obtain the overall risk of attack. This proposed approach comprises systematic steps to accomplish an assessment of any cyberattack and its associated risks in an uncomplicated and effective manner, enabling its prevention and mitigation to be determined. The paper illustrates an application of the proposed approach to assess the risk of an information theft attack on an organisation, which can then be utilised to assess the risk of other cyberattacks. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper examines the reproducibility of massive information analytics under particular factors. The paper proposes the 'performing Scalable Inference' technique to cope with scalability troubles and to exploit current big statistics platforms for efficient computing and statistics garage of the statistics. In particular, the paper describes how to perform leak-free, parallelizable visible analytics over massive datasets using present extensive records analytics frameworks such as Apache Flink. This method presents an automated manner to execute analytics that preserves reproducibility and the ability to make adjustments without re-running the entire technique. The paper also demonstrates how these analytics may help several real-world use instances, explore affected person cohorts for studies, and develop stratified patient cohorts for hospital therapy. In the end, the paper observes how the proposed method may be exercised within the real world. Actively scalable inference for massive information analytics is pivotal in optimizing decision-making and allocation of assets. Typically, such inferences are made based on information accumulated from numerous sources, databases, unstructured data, and different digital sources. So one can ensure scalability, a complete cloud-primarily based platform has to be hired. This solution will permit the ***, deploying the essential records series and evaluation algorithms are prime here. It could permit the platform to recognize the styles inside the statistics and discover any ability correlations or traits. Additionally, predictive analytics and system mastering strategies may be incorporated to provide insights into the results of the information. This paper presents an experimental study that compares the performance of four selected metaheuristic algorithms for optimizing a time delay system model. Time delay system models are complex and challenging to optimize due to their inherent characteristics, such as non-linearity, multi-modality, and constraints. The study includes an explanation of the choice and core functionality of the selected algorithms, which are both baseline and state-of-the-art variants of self-organizing migrating algorithm (SOMA), state-of-the-art variant from the Success-History-based Adaptive Differential Evolution family of algorithms, with emphasis on diverse search (DISH algorithm), and Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm. The hyperparameters of the metaheuristic algorithms were set using the iRace automatic algorithm configuration framework. The paper emphasizes the importance of metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time-delay systems to develop more effective and efficient control strategies and precise model identifications. The experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art algorithms with specific adaptive mechanisms like population organization process, diverse search and adaptation mechanisms ensuring a gradual transition from exploration to exploitation. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the challenges and advantages of using metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time delay systems. The results provide valuable insights into the performance of modern metaheuristic algorithms and can help guide the selection of appropriate adaptive mechanisms of metaheuristics.

This research aims to construct a two-dimensional image to represent an underwater geometry map with a Side Scan Sonar (SSS) mounted on a Hybrid Autonomous Underwater Glider (HAUG). Building the underwater map has two stages of the process. The first stage is preprocessing which includes Time-varying gains (TVG), slant range correction, and ground range correction. The second is HAUG navigation, the movement of HAUG orientation to the angle and distance of SSS readings and plotting the geometry of the grid map. With these two stages, a two-dimensional grid map will be formed. Meanwhile, the 3D plot utilizes slant range and ground range correction to obtain the surface height of the bottom of the pool. From the experiments conducted to conduct mapping in the pool, two-dimensional and three-dimensional visual forms of the pool floor and pool walls were produced. The results of the estimated measurement of the width of the pool obtained 14.05 meters and the height of the pool 3.199 meters with an SSS beam angle of 58 degrees.
