Technological development has brought the use of networks in control to the mainstream. Ethernet-based systems are becoming an increasingly attractive technology as they combine large capacity and high speed with flexibility. New trends in control technology must be reflected in the respective teaching activity. In the response to the demands the concept of mobile laboratory was proposed and has been implemented by the consortium of university and industrial partners from six European countries and two partners from Turkey. The CoNeT (Cooperative Network Training) project described in this paper aims at training of automation engineers, maintenance engineers, process workers and students both graduate and undergraduate in modern industrial Ethernet technologies. © 2011 University of Maribor.

The transition from analogue to digital terrestrial television (i.e. Digital Switchover - DSO) releases a significant amount of valuable spectrum (i.e. Digital Dividend), in UHF band. Digital Dividend will be available in the form of a "cleared spectrum" of contiguous channels, as well as in the form of "interleaved spectrum", namely TV White Spaces (i.e. TVWS), unused within given geographical locations, in order to avoid causing interference to co-channel or adjacent channel DVB-T transmitters. "Cleared spectrum" and TVWS provide an opportunity to deploy Cognitive Radio (CR) networks, able to operate in UHF band, by sharing the available spectrum with other licensed systems. In this context, this paper elaborates on the efficient sharing of TVWS by proposing a mobile TV network with CR capabilities, based on DVB-H. The proposed network operates as an unlicensed secondary system, accessing TVWS via a spectrum broker, which is in charge of assigning the available spectrum. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper elaborates on the design, implementation and performance evaluation of a prototype Radio Resource Management (RRM) framework for TV white spaces (TVWS) exploitation, under an auction-based approach. The proposed RRM framework is applied in a centralised Cognitive Radio (CR) network architecture, where exploitation of the available TVWS by Secondary Systems is orchestrated via a Spectrum Broker. Efficient RRM framework performance, as a matter of maximum-possible resources utilization and benefit of Spectrum Broker, is achieved by proposing and evaluating an auction-based algorithm. This auction-based algorithm considers both frequency and time domain during TVWS allocation process which was defined as an optimization problem, where maximum payoff of Spectrum Broker is the optimization goal. Experimental tests that were carried-out under controlled conditions environment, verified the validity of the proposed framework, besides identifying fields for further research. © 2012 IFIP.

The paper elaborates on a routing protocol that efficiently coordinates data flows among public safety secondary systems considering the unpredictable availability of TVWS spectrum resources. The proposed application scenario exploits for the communication of the nodes both Ad-hoc and mesh network architectures. Ad-hoc network connections are ideally for emergency situations, when the spectrum resources are pour, while the mesh network architecture addresses the emerging market requirements for building wireless networks that are highly scalable and cost effective, offering a solution for the easy deployment of high-speed ubiquitous wireless access. Efficient protocol operation as a matter of maximum-possible routing paths establishments and minimum delays is obtained by a coordination mechanism. The validity of the research approach is verified via a number of experimental tests, conducted under controlled simulation conditions, evaluating the performance of the proposed routing protocol. © 2012 IEEE.

Current advances in video surveillance systems for health purposes at patient's homes, usually for the elderly and patients with chronic conditions, in conjunction with the latest achievements in vision-based human activity monitoring and motion analysis, create exciting opportunities and novel service-scenarios for the home monitoring of patients with epilepsy. Such innovative service platforms are to be used for predictive/diagnostic purposes, by enabling the quantified analysis and classification of clinical manifestations, or for the efficient treatment of patients, by supporting clinicians to better assess response to therapy. Ultimately, such platforms enhance the overall monitoring scheme of a patient usually performed by caring persons, who might occasionally miss an epileptic event. This paper discusses the technological and legal preconditions for such a platform, based on current research results for the detection of absence seizures in conjunction with the expertise on ethico-legal matters for translational research gained through the CONTRACT project. © 2012 IEEE.

The paper performs an empirical study of the My Space Online Social Network (OSN). It aims to capture the evolution of user population, to examine user activity, and finally to characterize community formation using two well established community finding algorithms, namely the Fortuna to et al. and the Clique Percolation algorithms. Both algorithms are known to be effective in identifying communities in large graphs, starting at seed nodes and utilizing only local interactions between nodes. One million user profiles were randomly collected in a month's period. For each profile certain attributes were fetched: profile status (public, private, invalid), member since and last login dates, number of friends, number of views, etc. The profiles and their attributes were analyzed in order to reveal the evolution in user population and the activity of the participating members. Significant conclusions were drawn for the synthesis of the population based on profile status, the number of friends, and the duration My Space members stay active. Subsequently, a large number of communities were identified aiming to reveal the structure of the underlying social network graph. The collected data were further analyzed in order to characterize community size and density but also to retrieve correlations in the activity among members of the same community. A total of 171 communities were detected with Fortunato's algorithm, while using Clique Percolation this number was 201. Results demonstrate that My Space members tend to form dense communities. For the first time, strong correlation in the last login date (the main attribute that shows user activity) for members of the same community was documented. It was also shown that members participating in the same community have similar values for other attributes like for example number of friends. Lastly, there is strong evidence that participation of users in communities inhibits them from abandoning My Space.

Internet phishing attack is increasing and causing enormous economic loss in recent years. The network security literacy learning for educating students to defense phishing attack becomes more important. However, with the growing of attacking tricks, the anti-phishing knowledge is continuously increasing. The traditional learning platform with anti-phishing technical documents is not sufficient for students to prevent the phishing attacks. To transform the continuously increasing anti-phishing knowledge to learning materials, the Bloom's taxonomy of cognitive domain was used to classify anti-phishing knowledge into different levels of learning skills. Since traditional anti-phishing documents are difficult to read for students, the Anti-phishing Education Game was developed to provide an interactive narrative learning environment for learning by doing. Thus, the game missions can be adaptively provided to students based on their learning achievements and engage students' attention. The experimental result shows that students have significant progress in identifying phishing page and high learning motivation by using our approach. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper elaborates on practical considerations, such as location and capacity issues to offload resources, by adopting a rack based approach for the implementation. The proposed cooperative migration of resources enables efficient resource manipulation without any intermittent execution of the claimed tasks by the mobile devices, while it significantly reduces crash failures that lead all servers to become unavailable within a rack. In addition, this paper presents a modular resource migration scheme for failure-aware resource allocation, where according to the estimated performance of the resource sharing process (e.g. access time, service delay etc.) resources are migrated to another cloud rack based on the associated performance-oriented metrics. The proposed architecture is thoroughly evaluated through simulation tests for the resource migration policy used in the context of cloud rack failures for delay-bounded resource availability of mobile users, as well as for the efficiency of the proposed resource migration scheme. © 2013 ACM.

Air pollution can affect health and well-being of people and eco-systems. Due to the health risk posed for sensitive population groups, it is important to provide with hourly and daily forecasts of air pollution. One way to assess air pollution is to make use of the Common Air Quality Index (CAQI) of the European Environment Agency (EEA). In this paper we employ a number of Computational Intelligence algorithms to study the forecasting of the hourly and daily CAQI. These algorithms include artificial neural networks, decision trees and regression models combined with different datasets. The results provide with a satisfactory CAQI forecasting performance that may be the basis of an operational forecasting system. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.
