This paper deals with modeling and control of a hydraulic three tank system. A process of creating a computer model in MATLAB / Simulink environment is described and optimal PID and model predictive controllers are proposed. Modeling starts with creation of an initial mathematical model based on first principles approach. Further, the initial model is modified to obtain better correspondence with real-time system and parameters of the modified system are identified from measurements. The real time system contains nonlinearities which cannot be neglected and therefore are identified and included in the final mathematical model. Resulting model is used for control design. As the real-time system has long time constants, usage of Simulink model dramatically speeds up design process. Optimal PID and MPC controllers are proposed and compared. Described techniques are not limited to one particular modeling problem but can be used as an illustrative example for modeling of many technological processes. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

An isothermal reactor is a typical member of nonlinear processes. The mathematical modeling and computer simulations are tools widely used nowadays for their advantages over the experiment on the real system. The mathematical model of the surveyed isothermal reactor is described by the set of five ordinary differential equations which could be easily programmed and solved by mathematical software, e.g. Matlab. The paper shows a procedure for designing and controlling of this type of the reactor. The design of an adaptive controller uses a polynomial approach together with the linear-quadratic approach and the spectral factorization. It means that this controller satisfies basic control requirements. The adaptivity of the system is satisfied by the recursive identification of the external linear model.

The article describes the implementation of low pass Buttherworth digital filter in Self-Excited Acoustical System for measurement of stress changes in mechanical constructions and rock masses. The Self-excited Acoustical System (SAS) is a kind of a self-oscillating system, which uses the auto-resonance phenomena for measurement of construction stress changes. The essence of the SAS system is to use a vibration exciter and vibration receiver placed at a distance with a positive feedback, which causes the excitation of the system. Stress changes manifest themselves in small but detectable variations of frequency. This phenomenon can be used to indirectly measure stress changes in the material. One of the main problem of this innovating system is quality of the measured noised signals, which is difficult to interpret. To enhance the self-excited system performance the preliminary signal filtrating is introduced.

The paper deals with one possible control method of a tubular chemical reactor. The procedure is based on the decomposition of the controller on a nonlinear static part and an adaptive linear dynamic part. Derivation of the nonlinear static part uses inversion and subsequent polynomial approximation of simulated or measured steady-state characteristics of the reactor. The nonlinear part of the closed-loop composed of the nonlinear static part of the controller and nonlinear model of the reactor is then approximated by an external linear model with parameters recursively estimated via a corresponding delta model. The control law is obtained using the linear quadratic control theory.

Heat exchange belongs to the class of basic thermal processes which occur in a range of industrial technologies, particularly in the energetic, chemical, polymer and rubber industry. The process of heat exchange is often implemented by through-flow heat exchangers. It is apparent that for an exact theoretical description of dynamics of heat exchange processes it is necessary to use partial differential equations. Heat exchange is namely a process with distributed parameters. It is also necessary to take into account its nonlinear and stochastic character. In spite of these facts, most of thermal equipment is controlled by digital modifications of PID controllers at present. This paper deals with identification of a dynamic behavior of a through-flow heat exchanger and a design of an self-tuning predictive controller for its control. The designed controller was verified by a real-time control of experimental laboratory heat exchanger.

The majority of processes met in the industrial practice have stochastic characteristics and eventually they embody non-linear behaviour. Traditional controllers with fixed parameters are often unsuitable for such processes because their parameters change. The changes of process parameters are caused by changes in the manufacturing process, in the nature of the input materials, fuel, machinery use (wear) etc. Fixed controllers cannot deal with this. One possible alternative for improving the quality of control for such processes is the use of adaptive control systems. Different approaches were proposed and utilized. One successful approach is represented by self-tuning controller (STC). This approach is also called system with indirect adaptation (with direct identification). The main idea of an STC is based on the combination of a recursive identification procedure and a selected controller synthesis. Presently, most of the STCs are based on the Certainty Equivalence (CE) Principle, which is only suboptimal. One of the possibilities to improve the quality of these adaptive control methods is usage of an Adaptive Dual control (the bicriterial approach). In this paper, the bicriterial approach is verified and compared with some other adaptive control approaches based on the CE Principle by the real-time control of a highly non-linear laboratory model, the DR300 Speed control with Variable Load.

One approach to a recursive identification of continuous - time systems was implemented in self - tuning control of a system of interconnected tanks. Since derivatives of input and output variables of continuous - time systems can not be directly measured, differential filters and filtered variables are established to substitute primary variables. The filtered variables are then used in a recursive identification procedure where the classical recursive least squares method is used to identify the system. Results of real - time experiments are compared to results obtained with an analogical discrete controller. © 2012 IEEE.

The contribution is focused on a design of a control algorithm for a nonlinear servomotor with disturbance rejection using adaptive control strategy. It is obvious that for a rejection of the measurable disturbance is a suitable control strategy based on polynomial approach. The regression (output error) models are used in the identification part, the parameter estimates of the process and disturbance models were computed using the least squares method extended by a directional (adaptive) forgetting. The controller synthesis is based on polynomial theory - pole assignment method. The designed controller was applied to a laboratory servo system Amira DR300 in real-time conditions.
