Power-hungry Graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators are ubiquitous in high performance computing data centers today. GPU virtualization frameworks introduce new opportunities for effective management of GPU resources by decoupling them from application execution. However, power management of GPU-enabled server clusters faces significant challenges. The underlying system infrastructure shows complex power consumption characteristics depending on the placement of GPU workloads across various compute nodes, power-phases and cabinets in a datacenter. GPU resources need to be scheduled dynamically in the face of time-varying resource demand and peak power constraints. We propose and develop a power-aware virtual OpenCL (pVOCL) framework that controls the peak power consumption and improves the energy efficiency of the underlying server system through dynamic consolidation and power-phase topology aware placement of GPU workloads. Experimental results show that pVOCL achieves significant energy savings compared to existing power management techniques for GPU-enabled server clusters, while incurring negligible impact on performance. It drives the system towards energy-efficient configurations by taking an optimal sequence of adaptation actions in a virtualized GPU environment and meanwhile keeps the power consumption below the peak power budget.

Software testing is a critical process for achieving product quality. Its importance is more and more recognized, and there is a growing concern in improving the accomplishment of this process. In this context, Knowledge Management emerges as an important supporting tool. However, managing relevant knowledge to reuse is difficult and it requires some means to represent and to associate semantics to a large volume of test information. In order to address this problem, we have developed a Reference Ontology on Software Testing (ROost). ROost is built reusing ontology patterns from the Software Process Ontology Pattern Language (SP-OPL). In this paper, we discuss how ROost was developed, and present a fragment of Roost that concerns with software testing process, its activities, artifacts, and procedures.

In dynamic spectrum access, cognitive radio networks compete with one another to acquire under-utilized and idle channels for data transmission. Each network strives to acquire as many channels as possible to satisfy its maximum channel requirement. The main goal of a network is to maximize its utility and at the same time minimize the amount of contention it experiences with other secondary networks. In this paper we focus on the study of channel acquisition and contention handling mechanisms that a system of networks can adopt to maximize utility and minimize contention. A system of networks becomes stable if all networks have acquired enough number of channels to satisfy their channel requirements without any contention between them. It is obvious that a network's utility depends on the stability of the system and how fast the stability is attained. The mechanisms proposed in this paper ensure fast convergence of the system by minimizing the contention experienced until a state of equilibrium is finally attained. Simulation experiments were conducted taking into consideration the unpredictable behavior of the primary users who are the licensed owners of the spectrum bands.

Interface types in OO languages support polymorphism, abstraction and information hiding by separating interfaces from their implementations. The separation enhances modularity of programs, however, it causes also challenges to the formal verification. Here we present a study on interface types, and develop a specification and verification theory based on our former veriJ framework. We support multi-specifications for classes inherited from interfaces and the superclass, and keep the verification modularly without re-touching the verified code. The concepts developed in veriJ, namely the abstract specification and specification predicate, play important roles in this extension, and thus are proved widely useful and very natural in the formal proofs of OO programs. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The discovery of miRNAs had great impacts on traditional biology. Typically, miRNAs have the potential to bind to the 3'untraslated region (UTR) of their mRNA target genes for cleavage or translational repression. The experimental identification of their targets has many drawbacks including cost, time and low specificity and these are the reasons why many computational approaches have been developed so far. However, existing computational approaches do not include any advanced feature selection technique and they are facing problems concerning their classification performance and their interpretability. In the present paper, we propose a novel hybrid methodology which combines genetic algorithms and support vector machines in order to locate the optimal feature subset while achieving high classification performance. The proposed methodology was compared with two of the most promising existing methodologies in the problem of predicting human miRNA targets. Our approach outperforms existing methodologies in terms of classification performances while selecting a much smaller feature subset. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Many Android apps have a legitimate need to communicate over the Internet and are then responsible for protecting potentially sensitive data during transit. This paper seeks to better understand the potential security threats posed by benign Android apps that use the SSL/TLS protocols to protect data they transmit. Since the lack of visual security indicators for SSL/TLS usage and the inadequate use of SSL/TLS can be exploited to launch Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks, an analysis of 13,500 popular free apps downloaded from Google's Play Market is presented. We introduce MalloDroid, a tool to detect potential vulnerability against MITM attacks. Our analysis revealed that 1,074 (8.0%) of the apps examined contain SSL/TLS code that is potentially vulnerable to MITM attacks. Various forms of SSL/TLS misuse were discovered during a further manual audit of 100 selected apps that allowed us to successfully launch MITM attacks against 41 apps and gather a large variety of sensitive data. Furthermore, an online survey was conducted to evaluate users' perceptions of certificate warnings and HTTPS visual security indicators in Android's browser, showing that half of the 754 participating users were not able to correctly judge whether their browser session was protected by SSL/TLS or not. We conclude by considering the implications of these findings and discuss several countermeasures with which these problems could be alleviated. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

This document shows the research project developed by the computer Graphics and Vision Group in collaboration with Inescop. The main objective of this project is to define a new methodology to design shoes exactly adapted to the shape foot. The system proposed is based on a biomechanical anatomical structure of the foot and using a deformable shape. Using with several joints adapted the different foots to different shoe last evaluating the error between the surfaces. The system is automatic driven in the selection of significant foot points. We consider several anthropometrical parts of the foot in order to apply the deformations of the shape with different axis. The proposed system is implemented in software. An associated Application Programming Interface (API) is also developed for commercial use of the system. Also the results presented evaluate the error between deformations.

Active Learning (AL) is increasingly important in a broad range of applications. Two main AL principles to obtain accurate classification with few labeled data are refinement of the current decision boundary and exploration of poorly sampled regions. In this paper we derive a novel AL scheme that balances these two principles in a natural way. In contrast to many AL strategies, which are based on an estimated class conditional probability p(y|x), a key component of our approach is to view this quantity as a random variable, hence explicitly considering the uncertainty in its estimated value. Our main contribution is a novel math.matical framework for uncertainty-based AL, and a corresponding AL scheme, where the uncertainty in p(y|x) is modeled by a second-order distribution. On the practical side, we show how to approximate such secondorder distributions for kernel density classification. Finally, we find that over a large number of UCI, USPS and Caltech- 4 datasets, our AL scheme achieves significantly better learning curves than popular AL methods such as uncertainty sampling and error reduction sampling, when all use the same kernel density classifier.

In many large economic markets, goods are sold through sequential auctions. Examples include eBay, online ad auctions, wireless spectrum auctions, and the Dutch flower auctions. In this paper, we combine methods from game theory and decision theory to search for approximate equilibria in sequential auction domains, in which bidders do not know their opponents' values for goods, bidders only partially observe the actions of their opponents', and bidders demand multiple goods. We restrict attention to two-phased strategies: first predict (i.e., learn);second, optimize. We use best-reply dynamics [4] for prediction (i.e., to predict other bidders' strategies), and then assuming fixed other-bidder strategies, we estimate and solve the ensuing Markov decision processes (MDP) [18] for optimization. We exploit auction properties to represent the MDP in a more compact state space, and we use Monte Carlo simulation to make estimating the MDP tractable. We show how equilibria found using our search procedure compare to known equilibria for simpler auction domains, and we approximate an equilibrium for a more complex auction domain where analytical solutions are unknown.
