Prototyping in the development cycle claims to improve analyst understanding of system requirements leading to systems which match those requirements more closely. The quality of the end systems, from a user perspective, is thus improved. In this paper, the results of an empirical investigation into the use of prototyping in the development of various systems is described. Nine processes across eight different sites were analysed and data relating to each process was collected. The notation of Role Activity Diagrams (RADs) was used to capture each of the nine processes. Five hypotheses were then investigated: these related the prototyping role to features of other roles such as extent of interaction during the prototyping process, the effect site size had on the prototyping role and the dependence of the prototyping role on other roles in the prototyping process. Two coupling metrics were introduced to quantitatively analyse these RAD features. Results indicated a strong similarity between large and medium-sized sites in terms of interactions and behaviour. The prototyping process in small sites, however, was found to be different to large and medium-sized sites in both respects. The study demonstrates how measures of business models can aid analysis of the process as well as the products of systems development and highlights the need for more empirical investigation into this and other facets of the software development process.

We describe the design of a parallel global atmospheric chemical tracer model. This is part of a larger Earth Systems Model (ESM) for atmospheric dynamics and physics, and ocean physics. The ESM will be used for global warming and ozone depletion studies, among others. The goal is to parallelize the chemistry model to run efficiently on current and future parallel architectures, including the Sequoia archival database. We describe the preliminary design, especially the detailed timing model, and some initial validations. We have found a timing modeling very valuable for designing for a large range of architectures.< >

A model of knowledge-based text condensation is presented which has been implemented as part of the text information system TOPIC. Two major processes, text parsing and text condensation, are considered in detail, with emphasis on the latter. Based on principles of semantic parsing, the text parser serves the purpose of augmenting the initial domain knowledge base with the knowledge encoded in a text, thus generating a specific text knowledge base. A condensation process then transforms these text representation structures into a more abstract thematic description of what the text is about, filtering out irrelevant knowledge structures and preserving only the most significant concepts. Finally, a hierarchical representation of the thematic units of the text is generated in terms of a text graph which supports variable degrees of abstraction for text summarization as well as content-oriented retrieval of text knowledge.< >

A framework for modeling, analyzing and synthesizing nuclear safeguards information with various uncertainties is proposed by using a newly developed belief rule-base inference methodology (RIMER). After a hierarchical analysis of States' nuclear activities on the basis of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) physical model, the multi-layer structure of the evaluation model for States' nuclear activities is outlined. The special emphasis is given to the synthesis and evaluation analysis of the physical model indicator information by RIMER, which handles hybrid uncertain information in nuclear safeguards evaluation process. The proposed framework illustrates and clarifies the inference and synthesis formalism from a case study of nuclear safeguards information evaluation.

In this paper, a new regularization algorithm for solving ill-posed problems is presented with aids of singular system. By approximately choosing regularization parameters, the optimum asymptotic convergence order of the regularized solution is estimated. We present results of a biologically inspired method to enhance a sonar transducerpsilas directivity pattern for localization purposes. We show that an artificial pinna structure mounted over a transducer introduces features in its head related transfer function that are more interesting for localization than those in the basic piston-like directivity pattern of common ultrasonic transducers. We measured the directivity pattern of several transducer-pinna assemblies using a biologically inspired robotic bat head. We compare the measured head related transfer function of a larger (Oslash 10 mm) electromechanical film sensor with that of a much smaller commercially available electret condenser microphone, both with and without pinna. We investigate the added spatial filtering of a tragus or a ripple pattern in the pinna structure. We build monaural elevation template sets from the measured head related transfer functions and use an intertemplate distance metric to show that mounting a pinna structure over the receiving transducers makes these templates more suitable for localization.
