Mechanistic modeling of alarm signaling in seed-harvester ants

Ant colonies demonstrate a finely tuned alarm response to potential threats, offering a uniquely manageable empirical setting for exploring adaptive information diffusion within groups. To effectively address potential dangers, a social group must swiftly communicate the threat throughout the collective while conserving energy in the event that the threat is unfounded. Through a combination of modeling, simulation, and empirical observations of alarm spread and damping patterns, we identified the behavioral rules governing this adaptive response. Experimental trials involving alarmed ant workers (Pogonomyrmex californicus) released into a tranquil group of nestmates revealed a consistent pattern of rapid alarm propagation followed by a comparatively extended decay period [1]. The experiments in [1] showed that individual ants exhibiting alarm behavior increased their movement speed, with variations in response to alarm stimuli, particularly during the peak of the reaction. We used the data in [1] to investigate whether these observed characteristics alone could account for the swift mobility increase and gradual decay of alarm excitement. Our self-propelled particle model incorporated a switch-like mechanism for ants' response to alarm signals and individual variations in the intensity of speed increased after encountering these signals. This study aligned with the established hypothesis that individual ants possess cognitive abilities to process and disseminate information, contributing to collective cognition within the colony (see [2] and the references therein). The elements examined in this research support this hypothesis by reproducing statistical features of the empirical speed distribution across various parameter values. © 2024 the Author(s).

A generalized phase field model to simulate the dynamics of microstructural transformations in iron-based ${Fe}-{Cr}-{Al}$ alloys, incorporating the dynamics of equilibrium point defects is developed. The study of the formation and growth processes of chromium-enriched precipitates of the $\alpha^{\prime}$ phase during prolonged annealing of solid solution is provided. The impact of alloying element concentration and annealing temperature on the dynamic and statistical characteristics of the growing precipitates is examined. The scaling dynamics of the average precipitate size, their number, and the universality of their distribution over sizes are demonstrated.

The problem of blocking certain areas of network systems and their boundary case, which is the granulation of network to a set of isolated zones, is investigated in the article. The losses that await the system due to blocking of its separate components are determined, and method for finding alternative ways of flow motion bypassing the isolated zone of network are proposed. The granulation process of the network system is reflected as a temporal network and the losses that await the system during the deployment of such processes are calculated. © 2021 IEEE.

Current paper is devoted to modeling of information-analytical system for blended education quality assurance considering the socio-economic impact of this kind of educational services. Based on bibliometrical analysis, we outlined the necessity to consider the formats of quality assurance, its criteria, organization and management of blended learning with socio-economical problems as a joint system. Proposed system contains conceptual components and interfaces describing the interactions within developed quality assurance algorithm. Each component and interface are backed up by information services and socio-economic indicators for assessing system viability. We introduced the sequence for multi-level quality assurance procedures for the blended learning environment. We demonstrated that blended education quality assurance procedure requires effective instruments such as technology and experience transfer, gamification, research-based learning, etc. We proposed to use immersive learning techniques as an instrument to increase education quality and strengthen the bonds between main stakeholders. © 2022 IEEE.

Quantum nonlocality, pioneered in Bell’s seminal work and subsequently verified through a series of experiments, has drawn substantial attention due to its practical applications in various protocols. Evaluating and comparing the extent of nonlocality within distinct quantum correlations holds significant practical relevance. Within the resource theoretic framework this can be achieved by assessing the interconversion rate among different nonlocal correlations under free local operations and shared randomness. In this study we, however, present instances of quantum nonlocal correlations that are incomparable in the strongest sense. Specifically, when starting with an arbitrary many copies of one nonlocal correlation, it becomes impossible to obtain even a single copy of the other correlation, and this incomparability holds in both directions. Such incomparable quantum correlations can be obtained even in the simplest Bell scenario, which involves two parties, each having two dichotomic measurements setups. Notably, there exist an uncountable number of such incomparable correlations. Our result challenges the notion of a “unique gold coin,” often referred to as the “maximally resourceful state,” within the framework of the resource theory of quantum nonlocality. To this end, we provide examples of isotropic quantum correlations that cannot be distilled up to the Tsirelson point, and thus partially answer a long-standing open question in nonlocality distillation.

In this paper, recursive least-squares linear estimation algorithms are proposed for stochastic systems influenced by uniform quantization, random access protocol (RAP) and deception attacks. With the purpose of enhancing communication efficiency and reducing unnecessary data collisions, RAP is adopted to schedule data signal transmissions that are also subject to deception attacks. In order to alleviate the side effect of missing information caused by RAP, three compensation strategies (zero-input, zero-order hold and prediction-compensation) are utilized. By resorting to an innovation method, covariance-based filters are designed and then fixed-point smoothers are obtained in light of available observations. Finally, a simulation experiment with comparisons is employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed recursive estimation schemes, where the influence of attack probabilities on estimation accuracy is evaluated. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Synchronization forms the basis of many coordination phenomena in natural systems, enabling them to function cohesively and support their fundamental operations. However, there are scenarios where synchronization disrupts a system's proper functioning, necessitating mechanisms to control or suppress it. While several methods exist for controlling synchronization in nonspatially embedded oscillators, to the best of our knowledge, no such strategies have been developed for swarmalators (oscillators that simultaneously move in space and synchronize in time). In this work, we address this gap by introducing a control strategy based on Hamiltonian control theory to suppress synchronization in a system of swarmalators confined to a one-dimensional space. The numerical investigations we performed demonstrate that the proposed control strategy effectively suppresses synchronized dynamics within the swarmalator population. We studied the impact of the number of controlled swarmalators and the strength of the control term in its original form and a simplified one.
