Most vaccines require multiple doses, the first to induce recognition and antibody production and subsequent doses to boost the primary response and achieve optimal protection. We show that properly prioritizing the administration of first and second doses can shift the epidemic threshold, separating the disease–free from the endemic state and potentially preventing widespread outbreaks. Assuming homogeneous mixing, we prove that at a low vaccination rate, the best strategy is to give absolute priority to first doses. In contrast, for high vaccination rates, we propose a scheduling that outperforms a first–come first–served approach. We identify the threshold that separates these two scenarios and derive the optimal prioritization scheme and inter–dose interval. Agent–based simulations on real and synthetic contact networks validate our findings. We provide specific guidelines for effective resource allocation, showing that adjusting the timing between primer and booster significantly impacts epidemic outcomes and can determine whether the disease persists or disappears. © 2025, CC BY.

A set of new models that describe the dynamics of battles in strategic computer games is presented. These models not only have descriptive functions, but also allow solving problems of optimizing army control under given conditions, as well as calculating the most efficient composition of the army for the planned operation within a computer game. © 2023 IEEE.

Opinion disparity in hypergraphs with community structure

The division of a social group into subgroups with opposing opinions, which we refer to as opinion disparity, is a prevalent phenomenon in society. This phenomenon has been modeled by including mechanisms such as opinion homophily, bounded confidence interactions, and social reinforcement mechanisms. In this paper, we study a complementary mechanism for the formation of opinion disparity based on higher-order interactions, i.e., simultaneous interactions between multiple agents. We present an extension of the planted partition model for uniform hypergraphs as a simple model of community structure, and we consider the hypergraph Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) model on a hypergraph with two communities where the binary ideology can spread via links (pairwise interactions) and triangles (three-way interactions). We approximate this contagion process with a mean-field model and find that for strong enough community structure, the two communities can hold very different average opinions. We determine the regimes of structural and infectious parameters for which this opinion disparity can exist, and we find that the existence of these disparities is much more sensitive to the triangle community structure than to the link community structure. We show that the existence and type of opinion disparities are extremely sensitive to differences in the sizes of the two communities.

Nonlinear networks are often multistable, exhibiting coexisting stable states with competing regions of attraction (ROAs). As a result, ROAs can have complex "tentacle-like" morphologies that are challenging to characterize analytically or computationally. In addition, the high dimensionality of the state space prohibits the automated construction of Lyapunov functions using state-of-the-art optimization methods, such as sum-of-squares (SOS) programming. In this letter, we propose a distributed approach for the construction of Lyapunov functions based solely on local information. To this end, we establish an augmented comparison lemma that characterizes the existence conditions of partial Lyapunov functions, while also accounting for residual effects caused by the associated dimensionality reduction. These theoretical results allow us to formulate an SOS optimization that iteratively constructs such partial functions, whose aggregation forms a composite Lyapunov function. The resulting composite function provides accurate approximations of both the volumes and shapes of the ROAs. We validate our method on networks of van der Pol and Ising oscillators, demonstrating its effectiveness in characterizing high-dimensional systems with non-convex ROAs. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper investigates the recursive filtering (RF) problem for stochastic multi-rate (MR) systems, where the information transmission is regulated by an improved weighted try-once-discard protocol (IWTODP). In order to reduce communication overhead and mitigate network congestion, the IWTODP is firstly proposed and designed to schedule the order of data transmission from the sensors. The main objective of this paper is to design a new RF scheme to minimize the upper bound (UB) on the filtering error (FE) covariance in each iteration step in the presence of IWTODP and MR sampling. In particular, an iterative way is given to provide the expression form of the gain of RF. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed RF method is illustrated through simulation example. © 2024 IEEE.

The preparation of laser scanning missions is important for efficiency and data quality. Furthermore, it is a prerequisite for automated data acquisition, which has numerous applications in the built environment, including autonomous inspections and monitoring of construction progress and quality criteria. The scene and potential scanning locations can be discretized to facilitate the analysis of visibility and quality aspects. The remaining mathematical problem to generate an economic scan strategy is the Viewpoint Planning Problem (VPP), which asks for a minimum number of scanning locations within the given scene to cover the scene under pre-defined requirements. Solutions for this problem are most commonly found using heuristics. While these efficient methods scale well, they cannot generally return globally optimal solutions. This paper investigates the VPP based on a problem description that considers quality-constrained visibility in 3D scenes and suitable overlaps between individual viewpoints for targetless registration of acquired point clouds. The methodology includes the introduction of a preprocessing method designed to simplify the input data without losing information about the problem. The paper details various solution methods for the VPP, encompassing conventional heuristics and a mixed-integer linear programming formulation, which is solved using Benders decomposition. Experiments are carried out on two case study datasets, varying in specifications and sizes, to evaluate these methods. The results show the actual quality of the obtained solutions and their deviation from optimality (in terms of the estimated optimality gap) for instances where exact solutions can not be achieved. © 2024 Florian Noichl et al.

We discuss effects of electromigration in processes of nano-structured thin films growth at condensation from gaseous phase end epitaxial growth in the framework of numerical simulations. It will be shown that an increase in the strength of the electric field applied to the substrate promotes formation of percolate structures of adsorbate. We will analyze dynamics of the surface morphology change in details. This study provides insight into details of electromigration effects at self-organization of adatoms into percolating adsorbate islands during nano-structured thin films growth at both condensation from the gaseous phase and epitaxial growth of multi-layer pyramidal-like adsorbate structures. © 2022 IEEE.

The article is devoted to the description of functioning conditions for the granulation module for the porous ammonium nitrate (PAN) production. We present general information on ammonium nitrate structure role in the process of ensuring the quality indicators of an industrial explosive. We substantiate the necessity of using PAN in the industrial explosives production. We introduce a method for obtaining PAN by humidification followed by thermal processing in apparatus with various configurations of fluidized bed and the use of active hydrodynamic modes. A technological scheme for implementing the method is described. We give a brief description of the hardware design of the granulation and final drying stage. The results of microscopic analysis of PAN granules are presented and the nanoporous structure features are described. The technique of technological calculation of the granulation device for the PAN production is proposed. ©2021 IEEE

Out-of-equlibrium inference of feeding rates through population data from generic consumer-resource stochastic dynamics

Statistical models are often structurally unidentifiable, because different set of parameters can lead to equal model outcomes. To be useful for prediction and parameter inference from data, stochastic population models need to be identifiable, this meaning that model parameters can be uniquely inferred from a large number of model observations. In particular, precise estimation of feeding rates in consumer-resource dynamics is crucial, because consumer-resource processes are central in determining biomass transport across ecosystems. Model parameters are usually estimated at stationarity, because in that case model analyses are often easier. In this contribution we analyze the problem of parameter redundancy in a multi-resource consumer-resource model, showing that model indentifiability depends on whether the dynamics have reached stationarity or not. To be precise, we: (i) Calculate the steady-state and out-of-equilibrium probability distributions of predator’s abundances analytically using generating functions, which allow us to unveil parameter redundancy and carry out proper maximum likelihood estimation. (ii) Conduct in silico experiments by tracking the abundance of consumers that are either searching for or handling prey, data then used for maximum likelihood parameter estimation. (iii) Show that, when model observations are recorded out of equilibrium, feeding parameters are truly identifiable, whereas if sampling is done at stationarity, only ratios of rates can be inferred from data (i.e., parameters are redundant). NONLINEAR STABILITY OF COMPRESSIBLE VORTEX SHEETS IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL ELASTODYNAMICS

We investigate the nonlinear stability and existence of compressible vortex sheet solutions for three-dimensional isentropic elastic flows. This problem involves a nonlinear hyperbolic system with a characteristic free boundary. Compared to the two-dimensional case, the additional spatial dimension introduces intricate frequency interactions between elasticity and velocity, significantly complicating the stability analysis. Building upon previous results on the weakly linear stability of elastic vortex sheets [19], we perform a detailed study of the roots of the Lopatinskiĭ determinant and identify a geometric stability condition associated with the deformation gradient. To address the challenges of the variable-coefficient linearized problem, we employ an upper triangularization technique that isolates the outgoing modes into a closed system, where they appear only at the leading order. This enables us to derive energy estimates despite derivative loss. The major novelty of our approach includes the following two key aspects: (1) For the three-dimensional compressible Euler vortex sheets, the front symbol exhibits degenerate ellipticity in certain frequency directions, which makes it challenging to ensure the front’s regularity using standard energy estimates. Our analysis reveals that the non-parallel structure of the deformation gradient tensor plays a crucial role in recovering ellipticity in the front symbol, thereby enhancing the regularity of the free interface. (2) Another significant challenge in three dimensions arises from the strong degeneracy caused by the collision of repeated roots and poles. Unlike in two dimensions, where such interactions are absent, we encounter a co-dimension one set in frequency space where a double root coincides with a double pole. To resolve this, we refine Coulombel’s diagonalization framework [21] and construct a suitable transformation that reduces the degeneracy order of the Lopatinskiĭ matrix, enabling the use of local
