UAV longitudinal autopilot design using SLC and TECS controllers

UAVs are becoming increasingly prevalent in a wide range of fields, including surveillance, photography, agriculture, transportation, and communications. Hence, research institutions have developed a range of linear and non-linear controllers that can enhance the stability and efficiency of these UAVs while performing their assigned tasks. In this paper, we present a longitudinal autopilot design for the Sky Sailor solar UAV using two different control techniques. The first technique is a classic controller known as SLC (Successive Loop Closure), which is based on consecutive closed loops using a PID controller. The second technique is the TECS (Total Energy control System) controller, which uses the specified total energy rate and energy distribution rate to regulate the airspeed and altitude of the UAV. After detailing the working principle of each controller and calculating the tuning parameters for each one, we applied the two techniques to the non-linear model that describes the behavior of the Sky Sailor UAV using MATLAB Simulink. The simulation results showed that the TECS controller is superior to the SLC controller in terms of stability and energy efficiency. As such, this technique is an excellent choice for solar drones, as it can increase their endurance. © Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. 2024.

Real-time power flow analysis and management for a long-endurance solar UAV during continuous flight

One of the primary challenges for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) developers is to improve their endurance while in the air, as their typical flight time is limited to a few hours. One widely used technology to enhance their endurance is harnessing solar energy to power UAV and charge their batteries in flight. This article presents the development of a real-time simulation environment to enable the continuous flight of the Sky Sailor solar UAV. Through the utilization of a solar irradiance model, a solar panel model, real-time power generation is calculated. Simultaneously, the UAV’s full dynamic model, along with the autopilot and propulsion system model, is employed to determine the energy consumption at each moment. The energy management algorithm then compares the acquired energy with the power consumed, and in cases of surplus energy, it is efficiently stored in the battery for nighttime usage. Simulations show that continuous flight of the drone can be achieved during the summer season, when the daylight hours are long enough to fully charge the battery, With the ability to fly continuously during this period, the UAV can be used in various areas, such as monitoring forest fires, agricultural fields, beaches, and security monitoring for oil companies and their life bases in deserts. © 2023, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V.

This paper considers the time consistency of multistage cooperative games in which there are multiple optimal trajectories with complete information. In dynamic cooperative games, an important condition for the distribution of players’ payoffs is that individual rationality needs to be satisfied. If the players’ payoffs do not satisfy individual rationality as the game progresses along the cooperative trajectory, some players will deviate from the cooperative trajectory. If there are multiple optimal trajectories in the multistage game, the situation is further complicated by the fact that the players’ payoffs always satisfy individual rationality on some of the optimal trajectories, but not on others. Alternatively, players’ individual rationality conditions are quite different along different optimal trajectories. Therefore, four different scenarios of multi-stage cooperative games with multiple optimal trajectories are set up in the study and analysed for each of the four different situations. Four different Payoff Distribution Procedure (PDP) formulations are proposed to modify the players’ payoff distributions so that the game satisfies time-consistency on different optimal trajectories. The paper proposes an implementation of a 2DOF controller based on polynomial methods for control of a system of three serially connected tanks. A state-space model of the three-tank-system was figured out according to physical laws. Then an appropriate linear input-output model was computed from the state-space model. This model is related to the prime model, although it has a different structure. It can therefore be assumed that it describes the main properties of the controlled system in the same way as the prime model. The input-output model was then applied for design of the 2DOF controller. The system of three interconnected tanks has a nonlinear character and uncertain parameters. A description of its dynamical properties with the use of a linear model is appropriate just in a vicinity of a certain working point. The controller was then realized in an adaptive version with a recursive identification of an input-output model appropriate to the state-space model which was realized in Simulink environment and used for verification of the controller by simulation. Most of the processes that need to be controlled are affected by external disturbances. In many cases, the disturbances can be measured. A control method that can successfully cope with disturbances which are known in advance is predictive control. The disturbances known in advance can be incorporated into calculation of the manipulated variable in predictive control. In many control applications, the disturbances are measurable but unknown in advance. In this case, the future course of the disturbance must be estimated on the basis of its past values. This paper proposes different approaches to estimation of future course of the measurable disturbances in predictive control. Particular approaches were compared by simulation. © 2022 IEEE.

Microscopic medical image segmentation is essential for detailed cellular-level analysis in computational pathology, offering insights into disease mechanisms. However, this task is particularly challenging due to the high similarity between different cellular classes and variability within each class, especially in densely packed or overlapping cell regions. To this end, we present LEECAU-Net (Latent Entropy-quantized and Efficient Channel Attention-aided U-Net), a U-Net-based model designed to improve segmentation accuracy through a dual-attention mechanism. Built on an Inceptionv4 backbone, LEECAU-Net's encoder integrates Latent Entropy-quantized Channel Attention (LECA) and Efficient Channel Attention (ECA) modules. The ECA module enhances the network's ability to focus on essential channel dependencies, while LECA leverages entropy quantification to prioritize channels rich in information, leading to better differentiation between similar structures. We have tested LEECAU-Net on three challenging publicly available datasets: Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), Multi-organ Nuclei Segmentation (MoNuSeg), and Cervical Nucleus Segmentation (CNS). Across these datasets, our model achieves higher performance metrics than numerous state-of-the-art approaches reported in the literature. The improved results underscore the effectiveness of LEECAU-Net's architecture in handling the complexity of microscopic medical images, making it a valuable tool for advancing automated cellular analysis in biomedical research. The testing of the statistically significant similarities between two different data series cannot be measured using by Wilcoxon or T paired test, because there is not exists pretest and posttest. For the alternative way of testing the similarities, when data has some boundness, the proposal of using cross-correlation tests is presented in this paper. When necessary, the condition is existing some same characteristics, which can be seen as the connection of two power system nodes in the power transmission system. The cross-correlation analysis can be suitably complemented using by computing the p values between the correlation data themselves, which in addition, the trend of correlation data is measured for expression of the dynamic of cross-correlation achieved data. Application of the proposed method is realized on the real data set of the behavior of power transmission systems in the Moravia-Silesian region. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This study explores whether experience with AI tools and the intensity of their use influence individuals’ adoption of ChatGPT in the Czech Republic. Using data from 1232 respondents (aged 15+), collected via a quota-based online survey from April 8 to April 26, 2024, logistic regression analyses investigated two key questions: (1) Does increased use of virtual assistants correlate with a higher likelihood of ChatGPT adoption? and (2) Does frequent ChatGPT usage predict more intensive engagement with other AI tools? Findings confirm that people who use voice/chatbots more often are significantly more likely to try ChatGPT, and vice versa. Preference for text-based assistants also correlates positively with ChatGPT adoption. Unexpectedly, a generally positive outlook on AI across sectors (banking, healthcare, customer service) does not always translate into ChatGPT usage, implying that trust or scepticism can be context-specific. Another notable insight is that ethical concerns and a strong preference for human contact consistently dampen ChatGPT uptake, suggesting that perceived privacy risks remain a critical barrier. These results highlight the importance of digital synergy in AI adoption. Policymakers and industry stakeholders can use these insights to develop targeted strategies for fostering inclusive, ethical, and sustainable digital transformation. © The Author(s) 2025.
