We report the generation of polarization-entangled photons by cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The bandwidth of entangled photons is reduced to that of the optical parometric oscillator and the conversion rate is enhanced by cavity. The time interval between the conjugate two photon is prolongated so that it can be directly measured by a common detector. The time correlation function of the entangled-photons pair shows a time-oscillatory characteristic. To demonstrate the entanglement, we experimentally obtain two-photon quantum interference for the polarization variable.

Quantum spectroscopy was performed using the frequency-entangled broadband photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. An absorptive sample was placed in front of the idler photon detector, and the frequency of signal photons was resolved by a diffraction grating. The absorption spectrum of the sample was measured by counting the coincidences, and the result is in agreement with the one measured by a conventional spectrophotometer with a classical light source.

In this paper, a four-photon entangled state obtained directly from the down-conversion of a two-crystal geometry is analyzed. These two identically cut type-I crystals are oriented with their optic axes aligned in perpendicular planes. The applications of this kind of four-photon entangled state are also discussed.

In situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) was used to examine the zinc-terminated ZnO(0001)-Zn surface in electrolyte solution. Atomically-flat terrace-step structures were consistently observed on the surface which was prepared by chemical etching in alkaline solutions. Steps observed on the surface were composed of bilayers with a step height of 0.26 nm. Atomic images obtained by in situ EC-STM revealed that the surface has a (1×1) structure with hexagonal lattice. Etching was observed to proceed at step edges.

We report a coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in five-layered compound HgBa2Ca4Cu5Oy (Hg-1245) with Tc=108K, which is composed of two types of CuO2 planes in a unit cell; three inner planes (IP’s) and two outer planes (OP’s). The Cu-NMR study has revealed that the optimally doped OP undergoes a superconducting (SC) transition at Tc=108K, whereas the three underdoped IP’s do an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition below TN∼60K with the Cu moments of ∼(0.3–0.4)μB. Thus bulk superconductivity with a high value of Tc=108K and a static AF ordering at TN=60K are realized in the alternating AF and SC layers. The AF-spin polarization at the IP is found to induce the Cu moments of ∼0.02μB at the SC OP, which is the AF proximity effect into the SC OP.

An immunosuppressant FK506 has been reported to induce osteoblast differentiation in vivo [J. Bone Miner. Res. 15 (2000) 1147]. To study the role of FK506 in osteoblast differentiation, we examined the mRNA expressions of several marker genes (Cbfa1, osteopontin, and alkaline phosphatase) in an osteoblastic cell line: UMR106-6. Results showed that the Cbfa1 (osteoblast specific transcription factor) expression in UMR cells was enhanced by treatment with FK506, promoting osteoblast differentiation. The effect was marked when simultaneous treatment with FK506 and dexamethasone was given to UMR cells comparing with the effects of treatment with each substance alone or non-treatment.
