The effectiveness and studies of e-learning in Taiwan: A review and synthesis of 2000-2011 research literature

The purpose of this study was to review and synthesize the research literature on e-learning in Taiwan. In total, 86 journal articles and theses/dissertations, which quasi-experimental research methods were utilized in and included in three major domestic and international electronic databases between the years 2000-2011, were selected for review and synthesis. The purest synthesis method of synthesizing multiple areas with single method was employed to investigate the research literature. It is found that the quasi-experimental research studies and the effectiveness of e-learning in 2000-2011 in Taiwan are as follows: (1) Learning areas or subjects focus on formal sciences;(2) The researches are mainly done in the university/colleges primarily preparing school teachers;(3) The main subjects in descending order of frequency selected by studies are elementary school students, junior high school students, and senior/vocational high school students;(4) The most experimental teaching durations are between 101 and 300 minutes;(5) Motivation, learning environment, and technological capability are the three issues mostly concerned about;(6) Learning effectiveness are mainly argued from the two starting viewpoints, learning or technology;(7) Teaching theory focus on Piaget and Vygotsky perspectives of cognitive construction;and (8) The learning domains in descending order of instructional effectiveness investigation are cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.

This Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) in Engineering program entitled, "NUE: NanoTRA-Texas Regional Alliance to foster 'Nanotechnology Environment, Health, and Safety Awareness' in tomorrow's Engineering and technology Leaders", at Texas State University-San Marcos (Texas State) is a collaborative project with the University of Texas (UT) at Tyler to develop introductory and advanced curricula that address the 'nanotechnology safety issues' that include social, ethical, environmental, health, and safety issues of nanotechnology. The curricula will be modular in nature, suitable for use either as two full semester courses that will be taught online at the UT at Tyler or for insertion as separate modules into undergraduate engineering, engineering technology, and industrial technology courses at Texas State. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2014.

This study used literature review and questionnaire survey to summarize domestic and foreign ideals in workplace health promotion and healthy workplace promotional strategies. By exploring the views of professional and technical workers in the beauty service industry in Taipei area toward workplace health promotional activities, this study aimed to understand beauty service industry workplace health promotion ideals and its promotional strategies. Based on the results, suggestions were proposed as reference for beauty service companies in the development of workplace health promotion plans for employees. A questionnaire survey was conducted, and 230 questionnaires were sent to human resources directors of 4 beauty service companies by mail. A total of 116 valid samples were retrieved, for a valid return rate of 50.4 %. The data were analyzed using statistical methods of frequency percentage, mean values, and Chi square test of homogeneity. The results showed that most respondents believe that workplace health promotion ideals should provide a safe and healthy work environment, and promote healthy and preventative capabilities. The top three activities of interest for a healthy workplace are regular health check-ups, alternative treatments, and sponsored leisure activities, as well as obtaining information on health. Respondents showed significant differences in the levels of interest toward workplace health promotion ideals and health promotion strategies, and in preferences for methods in obtaining information on health and views regarding health promotion activities. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

The paper reports on our work developing a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional approach to teaching Ethical, Social, Safety, Health, and Environmental Issues in Nanotechnology. Under a grant from NSF, we are developing, implementing, and assessing two modular courses that include societal, ethical, environmental, health, and safety issues related to nanotechnology for undergraduates in engineering and engineering technology. It is a collaborative project between Texas State University, a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler), whose student population is 60 percent women. The work is being conducted by a highly interdisciplinary team of faculty who bring to the project expertise from mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, industrial education and technology, physics, biology, philosophy, and ethics. Here we explain the origin of the project, explicate how we have developed the course modules, review the first two semesters (Summer and Fall 2013) teaching from these modules, and examine our initial results and evaluations.

Volatile organic compounds off-gassing from firefighters personal protective equipment ensembles after use

Firefighters personal protective equipment (PPE) ensembles will become contaminated with various compounds during firefighting. Some of these compounds will off-gas following a response, which could result in inhalation exposure. This study was conducted to determine the magnitude and composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated during controlled structure burns that subsequently off-gassed from the firefighters PPE, and were systemically absorbed and exhaled in firefighters breath. Three crews of five firefighters performed entry, suppression, and overhaul during a controlled burn. We used evacuated canisters to sample air inside the burn structure during active fire and overhaul. After each burn, we placed PPE from two firefighters inside clean enclosures and sampled the air using evacuated canisters over 15 min. Firefighters exhaled breath was collected ∼1 hr before and 4-14 min after each burn. Using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, the evacuated canister samples were analyzed for 64 VOCs and the exhaled breath samples were analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene (BTEXS). Fourteen of the same VOCs were detected off-gassing from PPE in 50% or more of the samples. Compared to background levels, we measured >5 fold increases in mean off-gas concentrations of styrene, benzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, acetone, and cyclohexane. Several of the compounds detected off-gassing from PPE were also measured at concentrations above background during active fire and overhaul, including benzene, propene, and styrene. The overhaul and off-gas air concentrations were well below applicable short-term occupational exposure limits. Compared to pre-burn levels, we measured >2 fold increases in mean breath concentrations of benzene, toluene, and styrene after the burns. Air concentrations of BTEXS measured off-gassing from firefighters used PPE and in firefighters post-burn exhaled breath were significantly correlated. The firefighters may have

This study examined how students applied conceptual and procedural knowledge when engaged in an engineering design project. A mechanical toy design project was used as a context for exploring how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts taught in an engineering module facilitated student performance. Study data were collected from 103 high school student participants and analyzed using correlation, variance, and simultaneous regression analysis. The major finding of the study was that the students' STEM conceptual knowledge was the key to success in engineering design, especially at the synthesis and evaluation levels, and for their process ability to analyze, and evaluate during the project. Three recommendations are made to improve high school engineering instruction. To facilitate in-depth learning about the process of engineering design, multiple approaches should be employed to develop the students' application of STEM conceptual knowledge and process abilities. Teachers need to enhance students' science and mathematics knowledge to establish mathematical analysis and systems thinking. Students' spatial and sketching abilities need to be improved to better facilitate engineering design work. © 2013 TEMPUS Publications.

Exploring Organizational Learning Mechanisms in Small‐Size Business Enterprises

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the importance of existing organizational learning mechanisms and establish the size and magnitude of the relationship among the organizational learning mechanisms. Of great import also was to determine whether statistically significant relationships existed among the organizational learning mechanisms. An exploratory correlational research design was utilized to survey 498 employees from seven small‐size business enterprises located in the Southern and Mid‐Western United States. Mean scores indicated that respondents perceived leadership and evaluative inquiry as the prevalent learning mechanisms within the organizations studied. According to the findings, certain types of small‐size business enterprises exhibit organizational learning characteristics more so than do others involved in the study. The results of the correlation analysis showed that the learning mechanisms leadership and culture had the highest level of association, followed by culture and systems and structures.
