The South African platinum mining industry faces continuous challenges in terms of increased global competition, demand for productivity, skills shortages, loss of scarce technical skills due to emigration, strikes and high turnover rates. Hence, the lack of engineering skills (technical and management skills) may seriously hamper the capacity of the mining industry to ensure that productivity and safety standards are maintained. A quantitative study was conducted on skills needed by platinum mining engineers in three provinces in South Africa. A four-point Likert-type scale questionnaire ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree was developed. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was above 0.8, indicating high internal reliability. The population consisted of 300 engineers in platinum mines in three provinces in South Africa. A convenience sample was used; 79 engineers volunteered to complete the questionnaire. The response rate was 26.3%. A factor analysis was conducted to determine which skills of the engineers were the main concerns. The results of the study indicated that theoretical knowledge, technical skills, management skills and engineering principles were skills needed for technology-based engineering in the platinum mines under study.

Effects of leadership on financial performance at the local level of an industrial distributor

An important component in the industrial products supply chain is the distribution segment of the channel. The health and success of industrial distributors can often influence the success of manufacturers whom they represent. Although research has demonstrated how leadership is a key ingredient in the success of large corporations across industries, very little leadership research has been conducted in the industrial distribution market segment-especially at the local level. This research fills the gap between what is known about leadership in larger organizations, and the need for greater understanding of leadership at the local level of an industrial distributor. The authors of this study ask: how does leadership style affect the branchlevel sales and margin performance of industrial sales organizations? To answer this question, this study collected transformational and transactional leadership data from 100 branch-office locations of a national wholesale distributor using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Both leader and follower data were collected at each location. In all, nearly 300 people participated in the study. The authors calculated the predictive relationship between leadership style and average change in year-over-year sales and profit margin using a multiple regression analysis. The results show that a leader's self-reported transformational leadership was positively associated with sales and profit margin performance at the local level of an industrial distributor, while followers' ratings of a leader's transactional leadership style was negatively associated with sales performance. © The Journal of technology, Management, and applied Engineering, 2013.

To achieve the high performance system without any failure, we should provide the high reliability level of software. Soft computing models for software reliability prediction suffer from low accuracy during predicting the number of faults. Moreover, the models have some problems like no solid mathematical foundation for analysis, being trapped in local minima, and convergence problem. This paper introduces Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) to overcome the weaknesses of previous models and improve the efficiency of training process of Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network. Therefore, the network can predict the number of faults precisely. The results show that the proposed predicting model is more efficient than the existing techniques in prediction performance.

The purpose of the study reported here was to explore cross-cultural training programs and expatriate adjustment effectiveness that increase effective cross-cultural interaction. Effective cross-cultural training increases trainees' knowledge, encourages them to see the personal and organizational benefits of cultural diversity and cross-cultural competence, and increases their skill and capacity to work with cultural diversity. Cross-cultural training is an effective strategy in the achievement of organizational performance targets and multicultural policy objectives. Addressing the identified limitations of current practice in CCT will increase its contribution to the development and enhancement of organizational and individual cultural competence. Technical education mainly focuses on the development of students' motor skills. At vocational educational schools in Taiwan, technical teachers usually teach skills in a big class. Therefore, those teachers always face the problems of not realizing students' learning process and difficulties;the evaluation is also deficient in credibility and validity. The learners' self-reflection can help teachers understand their learning process. In this study, the researchers analyze the objectives, strategies and introspection emphasis in the skill-training stages and provide recommendations for students to reflect in each phase. Then the researchers apply these recommendations as the basis of introspection to build a Web-based learning portfolio (WBLP) for skill training. The results of this study reveal that the Moodle platform conforms to the requirements of building a Web-based self-reflective learning portfolio for technical training purpose. Besides, this paper has mapped out the Moodle Modules that provide the self-reflection features for a technical-training WBLP. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2012.

Internal control plays a pivotal role in enhancing security operations and quality control in an organization. From the perspective of management, internal auditors work for ensuring effective operations and improving performance for all the management systems within the organization. They bear great responsibility and play a key role. This study aimed to explore the internal audit staff demographic variables of personality traits differences. This research selected samples of the internal auditors from domestic companies, i.e. members of the Institute of Internal Auditors, in Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. The role of fines in liquefaction susceptibility of sand matrix soils

More and more empirical evidences had revealed the growing importance on the effects of fine grained soils towards liquefaction susceptibility of sand matrix soils. Although earlier researches were sorely basing on presumptions that clean sand has dominant effect on liquefaction behaviour while effect of fines is negligible, this is found to be incorrect. The basic compositional characteristics of fines and its corresponding plasticity behaviour are the main contributors in altering soil liquefaction phenomenon. The research findings are identical yet inconsistent. This paper reviews the overall development on liquefaction susceptibility, both empirical evidences and laboratory discovery since 1960s. The intention by most researchers to group silts and clays under same heading of fine grained soils had also caused misleading interpretation. The aim of this paper is not to establish a harmonization among different studies but assist future researchers on clarification of discrepancies found in the literature. This paper also describes the role of fines in soil liquefaction phenomenon. It is believed that the findings in this paper not only summarize the current research breakthrough on soil liquefaction, but also providing new emphasis for future research trends. © 2013, EJGE.
