Reducing Synchronization Cost for Single-Level Store in Mobile Systems

Emerging byte-addressable non-volatile memory technologies, such as phase change memory （PCM） and spin- transfer torque RAM （STT-RAM）, offer both the byte-addressability of memory and the durability of storage, thus making it feasible to build single-level store systems. To ensure the consistency of persistent data structures in the presence of power failures or system crashes, it requires flushing cache lines to persistent memory frequently, thus incurring non-trivial synchronization overhead. To mitigate this issue, we propose two techniques. First, we use non-volatile STT-RAM as scratchpad memory on chip to store recovery information, thereby eliminating synchronization cost in the logging phase due to the avoidance of off-chip logging operations. Second, we present an adaptive synchronization policy based on caching modes in terms of data access patterns, thereby eliminating unnecessary synchronization cost in the checkpoint phase. Evaluation results indicate that the two techniques improve the overall performance from 2.15x to 2.39x compared with conventional transactional persistent memory.

The energy-dependent expectations for the full KM3NeT/ARCA detector, both for diffuse and point-like signals are presented. For the diffuse analysis, the 90% C.L. quasi-differential sensitivity for 10 years of the full detector operations is computed, and compared with the IceCube measured diffuse spectrum. The whole energy range observable by ARCA ∼ (1 TeV − 100 PeV) is taken into account, selecting upgoing track-like as well as all-sky cascade-like events. For the point-like analysis, the differential sensitivity for several declinations is computed, selecting upgoing tracks νμ and ν¯μ charge-current interactions. Some particular starburst galaxies (SBGs) are considered such as NGC 1068, the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and Circinus Galaxy. The resulting sensitvities demonstrate the importance of KM3NeT/ARCA to link star-forming processes with high-energy neutrino production within a few years of operation. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

High-energy neutrinos could be produced in the interaction of charged cosmic rays with matter or radiation surrounding astrophysical sources. To look for transient sources associated with neutrino emission, a follow-up program of neutrino alerts has been operating within the ANTARES Collaboration since 2009. This program, named TAToO, has triggered robotic optical telescopes (MASTER, TAROT, ROTSE and the SVOM ground based telescopes) immediately after the detection of any relevant neutrino candidate and scheduled several observations in the weeks following the detection. A subset of ANTARES events with highest probabilities of being of cosmic origin has also been followed by the Swift and the INTEGRAL satellites, the Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope and the H.E.S.S. high-energy gamma-ray telescope. The results of twelve years of observations are reported. No optical counterpart has been significantly associated with an ANTARES candidate neutrino signal during image analysis. Constraints on transient neutrino emission have been set. In September 2015, ANTARES issued a neutrino alert and during the follow-up, a potential transient counterpart was identified by Swift and MASTER. A multi-wavelength follow-up campaign has allowed to identify the nature of this source and has proven its fortuitous association with the neutrino. We present a binary nonlinear programming (BNP) problem to model the hybrid cloud management where the utilization of physical machines (PMs) in the local cloud/cluster is maximized when the local resources are enough to satisfy the deadline constraints of jobs, while when not, the rent cost from the public cloud is minimized. To solve the BNP problem in polynomial time, we propose the heuristic algorithm whose main idea is assigning a task to a core of a used PM (in local cloud) or a rented virtual machine (VM) (in public cloud) such that the difference between the finish time of the task and its deadline is minimal in all of assignments. If none of unassigned tasks can be completed within its deadline, the algorithm adds an available PM with most capacity or rents a new VM with highest cost-performance ratio and assigns tasks to the new PM/VM as previous step. Extensive experimental results show that our heuristic algorithm saves 16.2%-76% cost and improves 47.3%-182.8% resource utilizations for finishing jobs within their respective deadlines with comparable overheads, compared with first fit decreasing algorithm. © 2016 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

Transfer of metacognitive skill can be assessed by experts with the high degree of subjectivity. The gap between the instructor's “process” and the learners' “counter-process” must be identified in order to correct and improve misconception and ineffectual transfer. Fuzzy Signature Approach help to clarify that there are two stages of assessments: value representation and numerical representation. In terms of numerical representation, we propose a method to solve the problem the practical assessment problems, especially the subjectivity, multi-dimensional criteria, and incomplete data, depending on the different context in each student. This paper also attempts to define the linguistic criteria, which suitable for theoretical framework of metacognitive transfer. The input variables will be scored by human opinion, as the subjectivity. In terms of fuzzy inference, the weighted generalized mean is employed to operate the aggregation functions. In this model, certain theoretical criteria become weighting factors when the act of assessment in classroom regard the criteria as the factor. Adjustment of the human discrepancy is probably normal but must be realized. The pattern of learning may not emerge from the order of the competences but a proportional weight of the driving factors.

The current upward trend of the residential energy demand and the high penetration of new renewable resources have changed the conception of the electrical grid. The centralized distribution scheme is currently moving forward to a distributed layout where the paradigm of Smart Energy Communities has emerged, meaning a set of households that share a Microgrid, have tied renewable production and can be either connected or disconnected from the main grid. In this context, due to the reduced dispatchability of the renewable generation, the planning of the installed PV power as well as the storage capacity is the cornerstone in order to achieve a high degree of both self-generation and self-consumption. However, the lack of detailed hourly or sub-hourly data makes it difficult. Therefore, this paper aims to present a high-resolution simulation method for evaluating the PV power and storage capacity requirements for a Smart Community based on a stochastic demand model and real PV production data, so the interplay between consumption and generation can be better understood. © 2016 IEEE.

The first evidence for X(3872) production in relativistic heavy ion collisions is reported. The X(3872) production is studied in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sNN=5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, using the decay chain X(3872)→J/ψπ+π−→μ+μ−π+π−. The data were recorded with the CMS detector in 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb−1.
