The measurement of the flux of muons produced in cosmic ray air showers is essential for the study of primary cosmic rays. Such measurements are important in extensive air shower detectors to assess the energy spectrum and the chemical composition of the cosmic ray flux, complementary to the information provided by fluorescence detectors. Detailed simulations of the cosmic ray air showers are carried out, using codes such as CORSIKA, to estimate the muon flux at sea level. These simulations are based on the choice of hadronic interaction models, for which improvements have been implemented in the post-LHC era. In this work, a deficit in simulations that use state-of-the-art QCD models with respect to the measurement deep underwater with the KM3NeT neutrino detectors is reported. The KM3NeT/ARCA and KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino telescopes are sensitive to TeV muons originating mostly from primary cosmic rays with energies around 10 TeV. The predictions of state-of-the-art QCD models show that the deficit with respect to the data is constant in zenith angle;no dependency on the water overburden is observed. The observed deficit at a depth of several kilometres is compatible with the deficit seen in the comparison of the simulations and measurements at sea level. © 2024, CC BY.

KM3NeT/ARCA is a Cherenkov neutrino telescope under construction in the Mediterranean sea, optimised for the detection of astrophysical neutrinos with energies above ∼1 TeV. In this work, using Monte Carlo simulations including all-flavour neutrinos, the integrated and differential sensitivities for KM3NeT/ARCA are presented considering the case of a diffuse neutrino flux as well as extended and point-like neutrino sources. This analysis is applied to Starburst Galaxies demonstrating that the detector has the capability of tracing TeV neutrinos from these sources. Remarkably, after eight years, a hard power-law spectrum from the nearby Small Magellanic Cloud can be constrained. The sensitivity and discovery potential for NGC 1068 is also evaluated showing that KM3NeT/ARCA will discriminate between different astrophysical components of the measured neutrino flux after 3 years of data taking. © 2024, CC BY.

Recently, evidence for an association between high energy neutrinos detected by IceCube and radio-selected blazars has been found by Plavin et al.(2020, 2021). This result was achieved using an all sky complete sample of 3411 blazars selected on their parsec-scale flux density at 8 GHz higher than 150 mJy. We perform a positional correlation analysis using the same sample of radio-selected blazars, with the latest point source sample of neutrinos extracted from the data collected by the ANTARES detector between January 29, 2007 and February 28, 2020. Classical continuum models are unable to describe the size effect in nano/micro structures, even though this effect is observed experimentally. Therefore, modified continuum models are frequently applied for the investigation of nanomechanics due to their computational efficiency and capability of providing accurate results which are comparable to the atomistic models. In this paper, the Mindlin plate is extended to the piezoelectric nanoplate with nonlocal and gradient theories for size effect. The governing equations for bending moments, normal and shear stresses are derived via the Hamilton‘s principle. Differences between the two theories are described.

The smoothing effects obtained by aggregating the production of several photovoltaic (PV) plants were analyzed in this paper, taking into account not only the grouped peak power or the distance between different PV plants, but also considering the different azimuth and tilt angles of the PV modules. The reduction in fluctuations, one of the main disadvantages of this energy source, will only have its effects on the distribution grid if the production of all grouped PV installations is injected in the same line of the network. Therefore, if it is not possible to include in the ensemble far away installations, with uncorrelated productions, a solution may be to use different installation angles in the grouped plants, in order to improve the reduction of fluctuations in the aggregated production injected to the grid. © 2016 IEEE.

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced in decays of standard model (SM) Higgs bosons is presented. The data sample consists of 137 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, recorded at the LHC in 2016–2018. A novel technique is employed to reconstruct decays of LLPs in the end cap muon detectors. The search is sensitive to a broad range of LLP decay modes and to masses as low as a few GeV. No excess of events above the SM background is observed. The most stringent limits to date on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to LLPs subsequently decaying to quarks and τ+τ− are found for proper decay lengths greater than 6, 20, and 40 m, for LLP masses of 7, 15, and 40 GeV, respectively.

The first measurements of diboson production cross sections in proton-proton interactions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV are reported. They are based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb−1. Events with two, three, or four charged light leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state are analyzed. The WW, WZ, and ZZ total cross sections are measured as σWW=37.0−5.2+5.5(stat)−2.6+2.7(syst) pb, σWZ=6.4−2.1+2.5(stat)−0.3+0.5(syst) pb, and σZZ=5.3−2.1+2.5(stat)−0.4+0.5(syst) pb. All measurements are in good agreement with theoretical calculations at combined next-to-next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics and next-to-leading order electroweak accuracy.

We present the results of the first combined dark matter search targeting the Galactic Center using the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino telescopes. For dark matter particles with masses from 50 to 1000 GeV, the sensitivities on the self-annihilation cross section set by ANTARES and IceCube are comparable, making this mass range particularly interesting for a joint analysis. Dark matter self-annihilation through the τ+τ−, μ+μ−, bb¯, and W+W− channels is considered for both the Navarro-Frenk-White and Burkert halo profiles. In the combination of 2101.6 days of ANTARES data and 1007 days of IceCube data, no excess over the expected background is observed. Limits on the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation cross section ⟨σAυ⟩ are set. These limits present an improvement of up to a factor of 2 in the studied dark matter mass range with respect to the individual limits published by both collaborations. When considering dark matter particles with a mass of 200 GeV annihilating through the τ+τ− channel, the value obtained for the limit is 7.44×10−24 cm3 s−1 for the Navarro-Frenk-White halo profile. For the purpose of this joint analysis, the model parameters and the likelihood are unified, providing a benchmark for forthcoming dark matter searches performed by neutrino telescopes.

In the past few years, clustering has become a popular task associated with time series. The choice of a suitable distance measure is crucial to the clustering process and, given the vast number of distance measures for time series available in the literature and their diverse characteristics, this selection is not straightforward. With the objective of simplifying this task, we propose a multi-label classification framework that provides the means to automatically select the most suitable distance measures for clustering a time series database. This classifier is based on a novel collection of characteristics that describe the main features of the time series databases and provide the predictive information necessary to discriminate between a set of distance measures. In order to test the validity of this classifier, we conduct a complete set of experiments using both synthetic and real time series databases and a set of five common distance measures. The positive results obtained by the designed classification framework for various performance measures indicate that the proposed methodology is useful to simplify the process of distance selection in time series clustering tasks. © 2015 IEEE.

For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above ∼50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance.
