Smart meters are the cornerstone in the new conception of the electrical network or Smart Grid (SG), providing detailed information about users' energy consumption and allowing the suppliers to remotely collect data for billing. Nevertheless, their features are not only useful for the energy suppliers, but they can also play a big role in the control of the Microgrid since the recorded power and energy profiles can be integrated in energy management systems (EMS). In addition, basic power quality (PQ) disturbances can be detected and reported by some advanced metering systems. Thus, this paper will expose an example of Smart Meters integration in a Microgrid scenario, which is the Intelligent Microgrid Lab of Aalborg University (AAU). To do this, first the installation available in the Microgrid Lab will be introduced. Then, three different test scenarios and their respective results will be presented, regarding the capabilities of this system and the advantages of integrating the Smart Meters information in the Microgrid control.

With the rapid growth of bandwidth-intensive applications, Carrier Aggregation (CA) has been introduced in Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) Networks to provide higher data rates. In this paper, we investigate the joint resource block allocation and link adaptation problem with CA in LTE-A downlink. The problem is formulated as an Integer Programming problem aimed at maximizing the cell throughtput while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) of each User Equipment (UE), in the form of the minimum transmission rate. We also consider the proportional fairness of radio allocation among UEs. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we propose an efficient algorithm QA-PFRA. QA-PFRA consists of two phases. In the first one we assign radio resource to UEs successively for QoS requirements according to UEs' priority, and in the second one we assign CCs to other UEs to maximize the cell weighted throughput. We develop a simulator to evaluate the performance of QA-PFRA. For comparison, we also implement GA algorithm and ERAA algorithm. It is found that the cell throughput obtained by QA-PFRA is about 70 higher than that obtained by ERAA, and QA-PFRA can also achieve higher throughput compared with GA when the UEs are sparsely distributed in the cell. Furthermore, we can observe that Jain's fairness index obtained by QA-PFRA is about 10 higher than that obtained by GA and 40 higher than that obtained by ERAA.

Smart buildings and homes are becoming a key player in the future green and sustainable energy grid, due to the integration of distributed energy sources and the demand control capabilities. Advanced smart metering systems are required for the operation of the future smart grid. Smart metering systems allow to monitor the energy consumption of end-users, while provides useful information regarding power quality. The information provided by these systems is used by the system operator to enhance the energy supply, and several techniques, as load scheduling, demand side management, non-intrusive load monitoring, can be applied for this purpose. This paper shows an advanced smart metering infrastructure for integration in future smart homes, where not only the electrical consumption is monitored, but also the gas, water, and heating. Therefore, by monitoring all energy systems in the building, the users could be aware of their whole energy consumption, and advanced control techniques can achieved by the Energy Management Systems (EMS).

Vibrotactile information can be used to elicit sensations and encourage particular user body movements. We designed a vibrotactile vest with physiological monitoring that interacts with a vibroacoustic urban environment, The Humming Wall. In this paper, we describe the first field trial with the system held over a 5-week period in an urban park. We depict the participants'experience, engagement and impressions while wearing thevibrotactile vest and interacting with the wall. We contribute withpositive responses to novel interactions between the responsiveenvironment and the vibrotactile vest, with a system designed tocalm, activate, guide and warn the participants. © 2015 ACM.

A surface can be harsh and raspy, or smooth and silky, and everything in between. We are used to sense these features with our fingertips as well as with our eyes and ears: the exploration of a surface is a multisensory experience. Tools, too, are often employed in the interaction with surfaces, since they augment our manipulation capabilities. "Sketch-a-Scratch" is a tool for the multisensory exploration and sketching of surface textures. The user's actions drive a physical sound model of real materials' response to interactions such as scraping, rubbing or rolling. Moreover, different input signals can be converted into 2D visual surface profiles, thus enabling to experience them visually, aurally and haptically. © 2015 A. Del Piccolo.

The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is an essential primitive that has been applied in various fields of science and engineering. In this paper, we present a study of the Nvidia's cuFFT library - a proprietary FFT implementation for Nvidia's Graphics Processing Units - to identify the impact that two configuration parameters have in its execution. One useful feature of the cuFFT library is that it can be used to efficiently calculate several FFTs at once. In this work we analyse the effect this feature has on memory consumption and execution time in order to find a useful trade-off. Another important feature of the library is that it supports sophisticated input and output data layouts. This feature allows, for instance, to perform multidimensional FFT decomposition with no need of data transpositions. We have identified some patterns which may help to decide the parameters and values that are the key for achieving increased performance in a FFT calculation. We believe that this study will help researchers who wish to use the cuFFT library to decide what parameters values are best suited to achieve higher performance in their execution, both in time and memory consumption.

This study proposed an analytical model to calculate the ablated region of ultrafast-pulse laser processing for alumina, which is widely used in electronics and medicine. More extensive applications for alumina ceramics are limited because of their machining difficulty and severe cutting tool wear. The use of ultrafast-pulse laser in the structuring and drilling of ceramics has been actively researched in recent years. By considering the evaporation to be the material removal mechanism, this study utilised a thermal transport equation with the energy balance at the solid-vapour interface to analyse the removal shape of alumina ablated by ultrafast-pulse laser. The ablation rate and opening diameter computed by the model of this work were compared to the applicable measured data. The effects of machining parameters on the removal region of ultrafast-pulse laser processing for alumina were also discussed. © W. S. Maney & Son Ltd 2015.

A search for point-like and extended sources of cosmic neutrinos using data collected by the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino telescopes is presented. The data set consists of all the track-like and shower-like events pointing in the direction of the Southern Sky included in the nine-year ANTARES point-source analysis, combined with the through-going track-like events used in the seven-year IceCube point-source search. The advantageous field of view of ANTARES and the large size of IceCube are exploited to improve the sensitivity in the Southern Sky by a factor ∼2 compared to both individual analyses. In this work, the Southern Sky is scanned for possible excesses of spatial clustering, and the positions of preselected candidate sources are investigated. In addition, special focus is given to the region around the Galactic Centre, whereby a dedicated search at the location of SgrA* is performed, and to the location of the supernova remnant RXJ 1713.7-3946. No significant evidence for cosmic neutrino sources is found and upper limits on the flux from the various searches are presented. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper introduces a software to calculate two kind of fuzzy histograms on fuzzy color spaces considering recent advances in cardinality and fuzzy quantification techniques. One of the histograms is based on the cardinality of the fuzzy set of pixels that match a certain color (modelled by means of a fuzzy set over a given color domain) and the other one is based on the compatibility between cardinality measures and linguistic labels, i.e., the accomplishment degree of linguistic statements about the number or percentage of colors in images. The software is implemented in Java and includes several graphical tools to calculate histograms for fuzzy colors in an efficient and easy way. Graphical representations of the histograms can also be displayed with this software.

Domain-specific Chinese term extraction via word segmentation optimization

Automatic term extraction has been a research hotspot in the field of Chinese information processing. However, the existing Chinese word segmentation systems such as ICTCLAS or LTP always get a fine-grained word segmentation result which destroys the integrity of terms in the processing of domain-specific texts, so that we cannot easily get the right terms. In this work, we try to solve the problem from the angle of the optimization of Chinese word segmentation. Two algorithms of word segmentation optimization based on Frequency and word segmentation optimization based on Pointwise Mutual Information are proposed. A new term extraction method "CI-Value" to extract domain specific terms from web pages based on the proposed two word segmentation optimization algorithms is presented to solve the problem. Several groups of experiments in "SPORT", "FOOD" and "IT" domains are conducted to verify the approach's effects. The results of the experiments show that our approach has more efficiency in Chinese term extraction and solves the optimization problem of word segmentation for Chinese term extraction in open-domain such as web pages from Internet well. © 2015 by Binary Information Press.
