Cortical prostheses are a subgroup of visual neuroprosthesis capable of eliciting visual percepts in profoundly blind people through direct stimulation of the occipital cortex. This approach is the only treatment available for blindness caused by glaucoma, optic atrophy or by diseases of the central visual pathways such as brain injuries or stroke. If these higher visual centers could be stimulated with visual information in a format somewhat similar to the way they were stimulated before the onset of blindness, a blind individual could be able to use this stimulation to extract information about the physical world around him/her. Here we present an update of the strategies we are using to transmit visual information in a meaningful way to the brain.

KM3NeT is a research infrastructure being installed in the deep Mediterranean Sea. It will house a neutrino telescope comprising hundreds of networked moorings – detection units or strings – equipped with optical instrumentation to detect the Cherenkov radiation generated by charged particles from neutrino-induced collisions in its vicinity. In comparison to moorings typically used for oceanography, several key features of the KM3NeT string are different: the instrumentation is contained in transparent and thus unprotected glass spheres;two thin Dyneema® ropes are used as strength members;and a thin delicate backbone tube with fibre-optics and copper wires for data and power transmission, respectively, runs along the full length of the mooring. Also, compared to other neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES in the Mediterranean Sea and GVD in Lake Baikal, the KM3NeT strings are more slender to minimise the amount of material used for support of the optical sensors. Moreover, the rate of deploying a large number of strings in a period of a few years is unprecedented. For all these reasons, for the installation of the KM3NeT strings, a custom-made, fast deployment method was designed. Despite the length of several hundreds of metres, the slim design of the string allows it to be compacted into a small, re-usable spherical launching vehicle instead of deploying the mooring weight down from a surface vessel. After being lowered to the seafloor, the string unfurls to its full length with the buoyant launching vehicle rolling along the two ropes. The ANTARES detector is an undersea neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The search for pointlike neutrino sources is one of the main goals of the ANTARES telescope, requiring a reliable method to evaluate the detector angular resolution and pointing accuracy. This work describes the study of the Sun “shadow” effect with the ANTARES detector. The shadow is the deficit in the atmospheric muon flux in the direction of the Sun caused by the absorption of the primary cosmic rays. This analysis is based on the data collected between 2008 and 2017 by the ANTARES telescope. The observed statistical significance of the Sun shadow detection is 3.7σ, with an estimated angular resolution of 0.59°±0.10° for downward-going muons. The pointing accuracy is found to be consistent with the expectations and no evidence of systematic pointing shifts is observed.

Recently, distance-based exponential probability models have demonstrated their validity in the context of estimation of distribution algorithms when solving permutationbased combinatorial optimisation problems. However, despite their successful performance, some of these models are unimodal, and, therefore, they might not be flexible enough to model the different modalities that may be represented in heterogeneous populations. In this paper, we address the particular case of the Generalized Mallows models under the Cayley distance, and propose mixtures of these models in the context of estimation of distribution algorithms. In order to evaluate their competitiveness, we considered the quadratic assignment problem as a case of study, and conducted experiments over a set of 90 instances for four different configurations of mixtures. Results reveal that the EDA with mixtures is able to outperform the Generalized Mallows EDA, especially in large instances.

The KM3NeT research infrastructure is currently under construction at two locations in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ORCA water-Cherenkov neutrino detector off the French coast will instrument several megatons of seawater with photosensors. Its main objective is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. This work aims at demonstrating the general applicability of deep convolutional neural networks to neutrino telescopes, using simulated datasets for the KM3NeT/ORCA detector as an example. To this end, the networks are employed to achieve reconstruction and classification tasks that constitute an alternative to the analysis pipeline presented for KM3NeT/ORCA in the KM3NeT Letter of Intent. They are used to infer event reconstruction estimates for the energy, the direction, and the interaction point of incident neutrinos. The spatial distribution of Cherenkov light generated by charged particles induced in neutrino interactions is classified as shower- or track-like, and the main background processes associated with the detection of atmospheric neutrinos are recognized. Performance comparisons to machine-learning classification and maximum-likelihood reconstruction algorithms previously developed for KM3NeT/ORCA are provided. It is shown that this application of deep convolutional neural networks to simulated datasets for a large-volume neutrino telescope yields competitive reconstruction results and performance improvements with respect to classical approaches. This paper presents a solar energy harvesting (EH) system to power a portable compact LED lamp, which can be charged during daytime and used to light during night time. The solar lamp consists of three PV panels, an EH and power management circuit, three NiMH rechargeable batteries, and an LED. A commercial off-the-shelf chip TI BQ25504 is used to prototype the EH and power management circuit for the proposed system. Experimental results show that the proposed PVsystem can harvest solar energy both in indoor and outdoor environments. The peak net power harvested by the proposed system is about 380 mW on a sunny day, 250 mW on a partly cloudy day, and 30 mW on a cloudy day.

There are two simultaneous transformative changes occuring in Education: the use of mobile and tablet devices for accessing educational content, and the rise of the MOOCs. Happening independently and in parallel are significant advances in interaction technologies through smartphones and tablets, and the rise in the use of social-media and social-network analytics in several domains. Given the extent of personal context that is available on the mobile device, how can the education experience be personalised, made social, and tailored to the cultural context of the learner? The goal of this proposal is twofold: (a) To understand the usage, and student behaviour in this new environment (MOOCS and mobile devices) and (b) To design experiments and implement them to make these new tools more effective by tailoring them to the individual student's personal, social and cultural settings and preferences.

Accurate characterization of real device samples is essential for understanding the true potential of the emerging non-volatile memories (NVMs) and identifying their optimal placement in the memory hierarchy. Even though, NVM devices are now available from different manufacturers, lack of an appropriate NVM controller and evaluation platform in the public domain is the main challenge in extracting empirical data from these real devices. In this paper, we present Open-NVM, an open-sourced, highly configurable FPGA based evaluation/characterization platform for various NVM technologies. Through our OpenNVM, this work reveals important low-level NVM characteristics, including i) static and dynamic latency disparity, ii) error rate variation, iii) power consumption behavior, vi) interrelationship between frequency and NVM operational current. In addition, we also examine state-of-the-art write-once-memory (WOM) codes on a real NVM device and study diverse system-level performance impacts based on our findings. All FPGA source code and detailed information of our hardware design is ready to be open-sourced and downloaded for free.

Kernel density estimation (KDE) is a statistical technique used to estimate the probability density function of a sample set with unknown density function. It is considered a fundamental data-smoothing problem for use with large datasets, and is widely applied in areas such as climatology and biometry. Due to the large volumes of data that these problems usually process, KDE is a computationally challenging problem. Current HPC platforms with built-in accelerators have an enormous computing power, but they have to be programmed efficiently in order to take advantage of that power. We have developed a novel strategy to compute KDE using bounded kernels, trying to minimize memory accesses, and implemented it as a parallel program targeting multi-core and many-core processors. The efficiency of our code has been tested with different datasets, obtaining impressive levels of acceleration when taking as reference alternative, state-of-the-art KDE implementations. © The Author(s) 2015.
