Designing and evaluating interactive systems for users with multiple disabilities is a challenge due to their cognitive, sensory, physical and behavioral conditions. Vibrotactile interfaces to motivate users' actions exist for users with hearing and sight impairments, but there are hardly any for users with multiple disabilities. We developed V-Sense, a vibrotactile interface that encourages children with multiple disabilities to move their arms by using vibrations and exploiting the saltation perceptual illusion. In this paper we describe our initial experience evaluating the interface with 5 children for 7 weeks and we discuss the first insights concerning the use of the interface and the difficulties encountered while conducting the evaluation sessions.

Reliability is a major concern for power systems that involve different types of uncertainty, including notably contingencies and intermittent wind generation. Contingency-constrained unit commitment satisfying the “N - 1 rule” is extremely complex, and the issue is now compounded by the drastic increase in intermittent wind generation. This paper develops a novel interval optimization approach for contingency-constrained unit commitment with N - 1 transmission contingencies and uncertain wind generation. The novel idea lies in using intervals to describe transmission contingencies based on generation shift factors (GSFs), as opposed to analyzing contingencies one at a time. The model that directly covers all transmission contingencies and extreme wind realizations can be over-conservative. To reduce this conservativeness, our model considers the non-contingency case with extreme wind realizations, as well as all transmission contingencies with the expected wind realization. By making effective use of interval arithmetic, the overall problem is linear and can be efficiently solved by using branch-and-cut. Numerical results demonstrate that the new approach is effective regarding computational efficiency, solution robustness, and simulation costs.

This work investigates the impact of non-periodic quantization step size variation on perceptual video quality. We composed non-periodic temporal variation patterns from periodic variation patterns. We present subjective test results and examine how does the overall quality under non-periodic variation relate to the qualities of individual periodic components, and how does it relate to the instantaneous qualities at different time points. We propose two quality models based on our observations and data analysis. Such quality assessment and modeling are essential for designing video adaptation strategy when delivering video over dynamically changing wireless links.

Map/Reduce is a popular parallel processing framework for data intensive computing. For overlapping the Map task’s execution phase and the Reduce task’s intermediate data fetching and merging phase, existing Map/Reduce schedulers always pre-launch the Reduce task at the specific threshold where its map tasks have been launched, and this pattern incurs the occupation of the consuming resources of the reduce task during its idle time on waiting for fetching the intermediate data from map tasks. To address this issue, we propose an extension version of Hadoop map/reduce framework, called Predoop, in this paper. The basic idea of Predoop is to preempt the reduce task during its idle time and allocate the released resource to the map tasks on schedule. To achieve this goal, first, we introduce the preemptive mechanism for reduce tasks and map tasks respectively to enable Map/Reduce tasks to be preempted or resumed with correct status;second, we adopt the preempting-resuming model for the reduce task with the consideration of the progress of Reduce task data fetching & merging and the Map task execution so as to determine the timing of Reduce task preemption and resuming;third, we introduce the preemption-aware task scheduling strategy to allocate the released resources to the on-schedule Map tasks with the consideration of data locality. Experimental result demonstrates that Predoop outperforms Hadoop on various workload and the average job turnaround time can be reduced by maximum of 66.57%. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Effect of Rayleigh Wave on Ultrasonic Underground Imaging

In order to acquire image with higher resolution and less error for detecting underground objects, a three dimensional ultrasonic underground imaging technique using an electromagnetic-induction type sound source and an amplitude correlation synthesis processing (ACSP) method has been proposed in our previous work. Depending on the conditions of the ground surface, Rayleigh waves propagating along the surface directly may be received with significant amplitude by the receiver array. That will cause interference with the reflect signal of the underground objects and will bring forth error images to the imaging result. In this paper, the Rayleigh wave with comparatively high amplitude is measured experimentally in a model field filled with mountain sands, and its waveform is estimated and simulated approximately by an exponentially decaying sinusoidal wave. The effect on the image of underground object is discussed by synthesizing the received signal with the modeled Rayleigh wave with various relative amplitudes. The result images calculated by ACSP method show that the effect of Rayleigh wave is not marked when its peak amplitude is not greater than that of the signal reflected from the underground object.

The gSeaGen code is a GENIE-based application developed to efficiently generate high statistics samples of events, induced by neutrino interactions, detectable in a neutrino telescope. The gSeaGen code is able to generate events induced by all neutrino flavours, considering topological differences between track-type and shower-like events. Neutrino interactions are simulated taking into account the density and the composition of the media surrounding the detector. Memory Efficient Two-Pass 3D FFT Algorithm for Intel~ Xeon Phi^(TM) Coprocessor

Equipped with 512-bit wide SIMD inst d large numbers of computing cores, the emerging x86-based Intel（R） Many Integrated Core （MIC） architecture ot only high floating-point performance, but also substantial off-chip memory bandwidth. The 3D FFT （three-di fast Fourier transform） is a widely-studied algorithm; however, the conventional algorithm needs to traverse the three times. In each pass, it computes multiple 1D FFTs along one of three dimensions, giving rise to plenty of rided memory accesses. In this paper, we propose a two-pass 3D FFT algorithm, which mainly aims to reduce of explicit data transfer between the memory and the on-chip cache. The main idea is to split one dimension into ensions, and then combine the transform along each sub-dimension with one of the rest dimensions respectively erence in amount of TLB misses resulting from decomposition along different dimensions is analyzed in detail. el parallelism is leveraged on the many-core system for a high degree of parallelism and better data reuse of loc On top of this, a number of optimization techniques, such as memory padding, loop transformation and vectoriz employed in our implementation to further enhance the performance. We evaluate the algorithm on the Intel（R） PhiTM coprocessor 7110P, and achieve a maximum performance of 136 Gflops with 240 threads in offload mode, which ts the vendor-specific Intel（R）MKL library by a factor of up to 2.22X.

Among Real-Time Strategy games few titles have enjoyed the continued success of StarCraft. Many research lines aimed at developing Artificial Intelligences, or “bots”, capable of challenging human players, use StarCraft as a platform. Several characteristics make this game particularly appealing for researchers, such as: asymmetric balanced factions, considerable complexity of the technology trees, large number of units with unique features, and potential for optimization both at the strategical and tactical level. In literature, various works exploit evolutionary computation to optimize particular aspects of the game, from squad formation to map exploration; but so far, no evolutionary approach has been applied to the development of a complete strategy from scratch. In this paper, we present the preliminary results of StarCraftGP, a framework able to evolve a complete strategy for StarCraft, from the building plan, to the composition of squads, up to the set of rules that define the bot's behavior during the game. The proposed approach generates strategies as C++ classes, that are then compiled and executed inside the OpprimoBot open-source framework. In a first set of runs, we demonstrate that StarCraftGP ultimately generates a competitive strategy for a Zerg bot, able to defeat several human-designed bots.

According to the need from the security and monitoring management, the paper proposes a new type of access control and positioning security management system based on RFID techniques. Combining with non-barrier access control subsystem and regional positioning subsystem, the system uses a small amount of passive and active RFID devices and monitoring management subsystem to make up the complex area of internal security management loopholes. In addition, an improved RF packet loss rate localization algorithm is presented to trace the exact location of the crews. The application result shows that the system can realize personnel identify, personnel fixed position and personnel track record etc, the system runs stability with a low fail rate and a quickly warned response.
