Voltage-frequency island (VFI)-based design has been widely exploited for optimizing system energy of embedded multi-core chip in recent years. The existing work either constructed a single static VFI partition for all kinds of applications or required per core voltage domain configuration. However, the former solution is difficult to find a single optimal VFI partition for diverse applications while the latter one suffers from high hardware cost. In this paper, we propose an energy optimization framework based on dynamically reconfigurable VFI (D-VFI). Our framework treats a small number of cores as dynamic cores (D-cores) and configures each of them with an independent voltage domain. At runtime, the D-cores can be pieced together with neighboring static VFIs. This can dynamically construct the optimal VFI partition for different kinds of applications, achieving more aggressive energy optimization under low cost. To identify the D-cores, we propose a D-VFI aware task scheduling and VFI partitioning algorithm. Moreover, we analyze all the VFI partitions to determine the optimal voltage scaling intervals which can accommodate performance degradation resulted from voltage scaling. Experimental results demonstrates that the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The use of complex network analysis has gathered momenta in both theoretical and empirical studies. Network clustering plays an important role in network analysis. This paper models the network-clustering task as an optimization problem. A novel discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm is introduced to solve the modeled optimization problem. Particle swarm optimization is a stochastic searching algorithm, and it cannot avoid prematurity. To improve the performance of the algorithm, a new particle status update principle is defined, a novel turbulence operation is proposed to improve exploration, and a novel local search strategy is developed to enhance exploitation. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world networks are carried out. Several state-of-the-art network-clustering approaches are compared with the proposed method. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is effective and promising.

Visitors utilize the urban space based on their thermal perception and thermal environment. The thermal adaptation engages the user’s behavioural, physiological and psychological aspects. These aspects play critical roles in user’s ability to assess the thermal environments. Previous studies have rarely addressed the effects of identified factors such as gender, age and locality on outdoor thermal comfort, particularly in hot, dry climate. This study investigated the thermal comfort of visitors at two city squares in Iran based on their demographics as well as the role of thermal environment. Assessing the thermal comfort required taking physical measurement and questionnaire survey. In this study, a non-linear model known as the neural network autoregressive with exogenous input (NN-ARX) was employed. Five indices of physiological equivalent temperature (PET), predicted mean vote (PMV), standard effective temperature (SET), thermal sensation votes (TSVs) and mean radiant temperature (T mrt) were trained and tested using the NN-ARX. Then, the results were compared to the artificial neural network (ANN) and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The findings showed the superiority of the NN-ARX over the ANN and the ANFIS. For the NN-ARX model, the statistical indicators of the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE) were 0.53 and 0.36 for the PET, 1.28 and 0.71 for the PMV, 2.59 and 1.99 for the SET, 0.29 and 0.08 for the TSV and finally 0.19 and 0.04 for the T mrt.

Quercetin (3,5,7,3’,4’-pentahydroxyflavone, QE), one of the most widely distributed flavonoids in fruits and vegetables, has been reported to possess a wide variety of biological effects, including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptosis, hepatoprotective, renoprotective and neuroprotective effects. In this study organic-inorganic junctions were fabricated by forming quercetin complex thin film using spin coating technique on n-Si and evaporating Au metal on the film. Optical properties of quercetin thin film were studied with the help of spectrophotometer. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of Au/quercetin/n-Si heterojunction diode was investigated at room temperature in dark. Some basic parameters of the diode such as ideality factor, rectification ratio, barrier height, series resistance and shunt resistance were calculated using dark current-voltage measurement. It was also seen that the device had good sensitivity to the light under 40-100 mW/cm2 illumination conditions.

Dynamic I/O-Aware Scheduling for Batch-Mode Applications on Chip Multiprocessor Systems of Cluster Platforms

Efficiency of batch processing is becoming increasingly important for many modern commercial service centers, e.g., clusters and cloud computing datacenters. However, periodical resource contentions have become the major performance obstacles for concurrently running applications on mainstream CMP servers. I/O contention is such a kind of obstacle, which may impede both the co-running performance of batch jobs and the system throughput seriously. In this paper, a dynamic I/O-aware scheduling algorithm is proposed to lower the impacts of I/O contention and to enhance the co-running performance in batch processing. We set up our environment on an 8-socket, 64-core server in Dawning Linux Cluster. Fifteen workloads ranging from 8 jobs to 256 jobs are evaluated. Our experimental results show significant improvements on the throughputs of the workloads, which range from 7% to 431%. Meanwhile, noticeable improvements on the slowdown of workloads and the average runtime for each job can be achieved. These results show that a well-tuned dynamic I/O-aware scheduler is beneficial for batch-mode services. It can also enhance the resource utilization via throughput improvement on modern service platforms.

Community clouds are a cloud deployment model in which the cloud infrastructure is built with specific features for a community of users with shared concerns, goals, and interests. Commercial community clouds already operate in several application areas such as in the finance, government and health, fulfilling community-specific requirements. In this demo, a community cloud for citizens is presented. It is formed by devices at the edge of the network, contributed by the members of a community network and brought together into a distributed community cloud system through the Cloudy distribution. The demonstration shows to the audience in a live access the deployed community cloud from the perspective of the user, by accessing a Cloudy node, inspecting the services available in the community cloud, and showing the usage of some of its services.

Impact of Electric Vehicles on Travel and Electricity Demand in Metropolitan Area： A Case Study in Nagoya

In this study, we examine the impacts that EVs （electric vehicles） have on vehicle usage patterns and environmental improvements, using our integrated travel demand forecasting model, which can simulate an individual activity-travel behavior in each time period, as well as consider an induced demand by decreasing travel cost. In order to examine the effects that charging/discharging have on the demand in electricity, we analyze scenarios based on the simulation results of the EVs＇ parking location, parking duration and the battery state of charge. From the simulation, result under the ownership rate of EVs in the Nagoya metropolitan area in 2020 is about 6%, which turns out that the total CO2 emissions have decreased by 4% although the situation of urban transport is not changed. After calculating the electricity demand in each zone using architectural area and basic units of hourly power consumption, we evaluate the effect to decrease the peak load by V2G （vehicle-to-grid）. According to the results, if EV drivers charge at home during the night and discharge at work during the day, the electricity demand in Nagoya city increases by approximately 1%, although changes in each individual zone range from -7% to ＋8%, depending on its characteristics.

There are currently several biological databases related to proteins depending on the information we are interested to extract. Therefore, since a heterogeneous set of features will be needed (domains, structures, ontology terms, etc), several quite different databases should be consulted. The handling of different databases can become difficult, as each database could provide a different nomenclature for the same proteins. Anyway, these databases usually provides some mapping tools in order to determine the correspondence among the different nomenclatures used for the same protein. The main goal of this paper is to provide a biological database including a huge amount of protein information in order to be used for different purposes in bioinformatics. This database will be designed as a flexible and extensible tool and it could be extended and updated when new proteins are annotated or the included ones are modified. © 2014 IEEE.

The KM3NeT Collaboration runs a multi-site neutrino observatory in the Mediterranean Sea. Water Cherenkov particle detectors, deep in the sea and far off the coasts of France and Italy, are already taking data while incremental construction progresses. Data Acquisition Control software is operating off-shore detectors as well as testing and qualification stations for their components. The software, named Control Unit, is highly modular. It can undergo upgrades and reconfiguration with the acquisition running. Interplay with the central database of the Collaboration is obtained in a way that allows for data taking even if Internet links fail. In order to simplify the management of computing resources in the long term, and to cope with possible hardware failures of one or more computers, the KM3NeT Control Unit software features a custom dynamic resource provisioning and failover technology, which is especially important for ensuring continuity in case of rare transient events in multi-messenger astronomy. The software architecture relies on ubiquitous tools and broadly adopted technologies and has been successfully tested on several operating systems. Copyright © 2019, The Authors.
