The creep properties of fine sandstone under uniaxial tensile stress

A graduated uniaxial direct tensile creep test for fine sandstone is conducted by adopting a custom-designed direct tensile test device for rock. The experiment shows that the tensile creep of fine sandstone has similar creep curve patterns to those of compression creep, while the ratios of the creep strain to the total strain obtained in the tensile tests are substantially higher than those obtained for similar compression tests, which indicates that the creep ability of rock in the tensile process is higher than that in the uniaxial compression process. Based on the elastic modulus in the approximately linear portion of the obtained isochronous stress-strain curves of the tensile creep, the time dependence of the elasticity modulus for the Kelvin model is evaluated, and a revised generalized Kelvin model is obtained by substitution into the generalized Kelvin model. A new viscousplastic model is proposed to describe the accelerated creep properties, and this model is combined in series with the revised generalized Kelvin model to form a new nonlinear viscoelastic-plastic creep model that can describe the properties of attenuation creep, steady creep, and accelerated creep. Comparison of the test and theoretical curves demonstrates that they are nearly identical, which verifies the performance of the model. © 2015 Kavala Institute of technology.

This paper describes an operational geographically distributed and heterogeneous cloud infrastructure with services and applications deployed in the Guifi community network. The presented cloud is a particular case of a community cloud, developed according to the specific needs and conditions of community networks. We describe the concept of this community cloud, explain our technical choices for building it, and our experience with the deployment of this cloud. We review our solutions and experience on offering the different service models of cloud computing (IaaS, PaaS and SaaS) in community networks. The deployed cloud infrastructure aims to provide stable and attractive cloud services in order to encourage community network user to use, keep and extend it with new services and applications.

In this paper we have developed a methodology and a numerical model for sizing photovoltaic (PV) arrays for grid-connected power consumers. The decision variables proposed are the PV contribution to the power demand and a transfer factor. The latter is a new index that we have defined, and it constitutes key knowledge for decision making when aiming to reduce power transfers between a local power system and the electric grid. The developed model generates days of solar irradiance and calculates PV power output for commercial PV modules. Sizing diagrams are presented that illustrate how the PV capacity, for a specific location and a local power demand, affects the PV contribution to the demand and the power trades with grid. For the particular simulation conditions studied, the sizing diagrams show PV contribution saturation levels and global transfer factor minimums. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Cloud federation is foreseen to happen among large cloud providers. The resulting interoperability of cloud services among these providers will then increase even more the elasticity of cloud services. The cloud provisioned that is targeted by this scenario is mainly one which combines the cloud services offered by large enterprises. Cloud computing, however, has started moving to the edge. We now increasingly see the tendency to fullfil cloud computing requirements by multiple levels and different kind of infrastructures, where the Fog Computing paradigm has started playing its role. For this scenario of edge computing, we show in this paper the case of the federation of multiple independent micro-cloud providers within a community network, where providers pool their resources and services into a community cloud. Federation happens here primarily at the service level and the domain of trust is the community of practice. While we can today already report this case in the context of community networks, IPv6 deployment in the Internet will principally allow micro-cloud providers to appear everywhere, needing cloud federation mechanisms. We describe for a real case how this micro-cloud provider federation has been built and argue why micro-cloud provider should be considered for the integration in cloud federations.

Brainstorming and discussions with users about their situated needs is difficult with nomadic users as the situation and location setting in the discussion is often lost in traditional workshops in meeting rooms. In many fields, conducting them in situ is difficult for both ethical and practical reasons, such as in a hospital. To mitigate this, a combination of methods is often necessary to ensure sufficient detail in the collected data. In this paper we will show the use of inexpensive children's building blocks as a tool for creating simple discussion support for brainstorming workshops. Calling context has been widely used in many software development processes such as testing, event logging, and program analysis. It plays an even more important role in data race detection and performance bottleneck analysis for multi-threaded programs. This paper presents DACCE (Dynamic and Adaptive Calling Context Encoding), an efficient runtime encoding/decoding mechanism for singlethreaded and multi-threaded programs that captures dynamic calling contexts. It can dynamically encode all call paths invoked at runtime, and adjust the encodings according to program's execution behavior. In contrast to existing context encoding method, DACCE can work on incomplete call graph, and it does not require source code analysis and offline profiling to conduct context encoding. DACCE has significantly expanded the functionality and applicability of calling context with even lower runtime overhead. DACCE is very efficient based on experiments with SPEC CPU2006 and Parsec 2.1 (with about 2% of runtime overhead) and effective for all tested benchmarks. In the past years, the IceCube Collaboration has reported in several analyses the observation of astrophysical high-energy neutrino events. Despite a compelling evidence for the first identification of a neutrino source, TXS 0506+056, the origin of the majority of these events is still unknown. In this paper, a possible transient origin of the IceCube astrophysical events is searched for using neutrino events detected by the ANTARES telescope. The arrival time and direction of 6894 track-like and 160 shower-like events detected over 2346 days of livetime are examined to search for coincidences with 54 IceCube high-energy track-like neutrino events, by means of a maximum likelihood method. No significant correlation is observed and upper limits on the one-flavour neutrino fluence from the direction of the IceCube candidates are derived. The non-observation of time and space correlation within the time window of 0.1 days with the two most energetic IceCube events constrains the spectral index of a possible point-like transient neutrino source, to be harder than −2.3 and −2.4 for each event, respectively. Programs written in Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) languages can access any location of the entire address space via standard read/write operations. However, the compiler have to create the communication mechanisms and the runtime system to use synchronization primitives to ensure the correct execution of the programs. However, PGAS programs may have fine-grained shared accesses that lead to performance degradation. One solution is to use the inspector-executor technique to determine which accesses are indeed remote and which accesses may be coalesced in larger remote access operations. A straightforward implementation of the inspector-executor in a PGAS system may result in excessive instrumentation that hinders performance. This paper introduces a shared-data localization transformation based on linear memory descriptors (LMADs) that reduces the amount of instrumentation introduced by the compiler into programs written in the UPC language and describes a prototype implementation of the proposed transformation. A performance evaluation, using up to 2048 cores of a POWER 775 supercomputer, allows for a prediction that applications with regular accesses can achieve up to 180% of the performance of handoptimized versions while applications with irregular accesses yield performance gain from 1.12X up to 6.3X speedup. © 2014 IEEE.
