To effectively manage uncertainties at high levels of wind penetration, stochastic unit commitment (UC) has been investigated based on scenarios, and multiple sets of prices can be directly obtained as byproducts. For day-ahead markets, however, it is crucial to obtain one set of prices/payments before the realizations of uncertainties. To achieve this goal, several pricing schemes were presented in the literature considering desired economic properties. They included single-period scenario-based models. The extension of such models to multi-period problems, however, suffers from computational complexity. Recently, we developed a Markov-based UC framework where uncertainties are represented by states instead of scenarios, leading to efficient computation. This paper develops two corresponding day-ahead pricing schemes based on sensitivity analysis to reflect the fundamental physical meaning of stochastic marginal prices. To obtain one set of day-ahead payments, ideas from the scenario-based schemes developed by Wong and Fuller are borrowed. Desired economic properties, including economic efficiency and revenue adequacy, are examined assuming truthful bidding. This work lays the foundation for Markov-based multi-period market settlement.

Vehicular Ad-Hoc NETworks (VANETs), a pillar for the Internet of Vehicles, aim to improve road safety by preventing and reducing traffic accidents. While VANETs offer a great variety of safety and infotainment applications, there remain a number of security and privacy challenges, such as, user profiling and vehicle tracking, which, must be addressed. This paper contributes with a framework to address security and privacy issues in VANETs. The proposed framework consists of i) an inter-domain authentication system able to provide a near realtime certificate status service, ii) a mechanism to quantitatively evaluate the trust level of a CA and establish a on-the-fly interoperability relationship, and iii) a privacy enhancing model that addresses privacy in terms of linkability.

The impact of reliable estimation of stream flows at highly urbanized areas and the associated receiving waters is very important for water resources analysis and design. We used the least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) based algorithm to forecast the future streamfiow discharge. A Gaussian Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel framework was built on the data set to optimize the tuning parameters and to obtain the moderated output. The training process of LS-SVM was designed to select both kernel parameters and regularization constants. The USGS real-time water data were used as time series input. 50%of the data were used for training, and 50%were used for testing. The experimental results showed that the LS-SVM algorithm is a reliable and efficient method for streamfiow prediction, which has an important impact to the water resource management field.

Slime mould Physarum polycephalum is a single cell that is visible by the unaided eye. When spanning sources of nutrients the slime mould builds a network of protoplasmic tubes which is sometimes considered to be optimal in terms of the minimization of metabolite transportation time and distance away from repellents. Previously we have shown that the slime mould is efficient in imitating the formation of man-made road networks in major countries, where major urban areas are sources of nutrients. We used a similar approach to grow slime mould on a three-dimensional template of the Moon to speculate on potential colonisation scenarios. The slime mould imitated the propagation of colonisation in an exploratory mode, i.e. without any definite targets. Additional transportation hubs/targets were added after the initial network was formed, to imitate the development of colonies in parallel with slime mould growth. We provide analyses of proximity graphs representing colonisation networks and support the findings with Physarum-inspired algorithms to inform supply chain design. We speculate on how living Physarum, or its incorporation into a polymer hybrid material, can be used as a wearable smart wetware based on laboratory experiments interacting with chemical components.

Affinity-Based Network Interfaces for Efficient Communication on Multicore architectures

Improving the network interface performance is needed by the demand of applications with high communication requirements （for example, some multimedia, real-time, and high-performance computing applications）, and the availability of network links providing multiple gigabits per second bandwidths that could require many processor cycles for communication tasks. Multicore architectures, the current trend in the microprocessor development to cope with the difficulties to further increase clock frequencies and microarchitecture efficiencies, provide new opportunities to exploit the parallelism available in the nodes for designing efficient communication architectures. Nevertheless, although present OS network stacks include multiple threads that make it possible to execute network tasks concurrently in the kernel, the implementations of packet-based or connection-based parallelism are not trivial as they have to take into account issues related with the cost of synchronization in the access to shared resources and the efficient use of caches. Therefore, a common trend in many recent researches on this topic is to assign network interrupts and the corresponding protocol and network application processing to the same core, as with this affinity scheduling it would be possible to reduce the contention for shared resources and the cache misses. In this paper we propose and analyze several configurations to distribute the network interface among the different cores available in the server. These alternatives have been devised according to the affinity of the corresponding communication tasks with the location （proximity to the memories where the different data structures are stored） and characteristics of the processing core. As this approach uses several cores to accelerate the communication path of a given connection, it can be seen as complementary to those that consider several cores to simultaneously process packets belonging to either the same or different connections.

Robots operating in household environments need to interact with food containers of different types. Whether a container is filled with milk, juice, yogurt or coffee may affect the way robots grasp and manipulate the container. In this paper, we concentrate on the problem of identifying what kind of content is in a container based on tactile and/or visual feedback in combination with grasping. In particular, we investigate the benefits of using unimodal (visual or tactile) or bimodal (visual-tactile) sensory data for this purpose. We direct our study toward cardboard containers with liquid or solid content or being empty. The motivation for using grasping rather than shaking is that we want to investigate the content prior to applying manipulation actions to a container. Our results show that we achieve comparable classification rates with unimodal data and that the visual and tactile data are complimentary.

This study establishes three-dimensional numerical wave tank based on the theory of viscous flow to simulate the unsteady motion response of a Wigley advancing in regular heading waves. The governing equations, Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes and continuity equations are discretized by finite volume method, a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver is employed to predict the motions of ship, and volume of fluid method is adopted to capture the nonlinear free surface by writing user-defined functions. The outgoing waves are dissipated inside an artificial damping zone located at the rear part (about 1-2 wave lengths) of the wave tank. The numerical simulation results are compared with theoretical and experimental data from Delft University of technology, and show good agreement with them. This research can be used to further analyze and predict hydrodynamic performance of ship and marine floating structures in waves and help to extend the applications of numerical wave tank. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In this study, the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder at the low Reynolds number of 200 is simulated by a transient coupled fluid-structure interaction numerical model using the combination of FLUENT and ANSYS platforms. Considering VIV with low reduced damping parameters, the trend of the lift coefficient, the drag coefficient and the displacement of the cylinder are analyzed under different oscillating frequencies of the cylinder. The frequency ratio α is a very important parameter, which has been intensively investigated here. The typical nonlinear phenomena of lockedin, beat and phases switch can be captured successfully. The evolution of vortex shedding from the cylinder and the trajectory of the 2 DOF case with varied frequency ratio is also discussed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In this study, we develop an immersed boundary method - volume of fluid (IBM-VOF) two-phase flow solver to simulate two-phase flow problem contains solid boundaries and free surface and use it to solve the typical problems for floating marine structures. In the solver, the IBM method is adapted to solve the problems of the moving marine structures and the VOF method for solving the problems of a free surface flow. The free surface at the fluid is considered as the mixed fluid of sea water and air in the solver. Base on this IBM-VOF two-phase flow model, hydrodynamic analysis of a floating marine structure with forced heave motion is done, and hydrodynamic force coefficients are computed. In this case, we firstly calculate the forces of the floating marine structure under different frequencies, and then we get added mass and added damping through fitting the data of the forces by the least square method. The results obtained from the present model are compared, which verified the reliability and accuracy of this numerical model. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Recently, probability models on rankings have been proposed in the field of estimation of distribution algorithms in order to solve permutation-based combinatorial optimisation problems. Particularly, distance-based ranking models, such as Mallows and Generalized Mallows under the Kendall's-τ distance, have demonstrated their validity when solving this type of problems. Nevertheless, there are still many trends that deserve further study. In this paper, we extend the use of distance-based ranking models in the framework of EDAs by introducing new distance metrics such as Cayley and Ulam. In order to analyse the performance of the Mallows and Generalized Mallows EDAs under the Kendall, Cayley and Ulam distances, we run them on a benchmark of 120 instances from four well known permutation problems. The conducted experiments showed that there is not just one metric that performs the best in all the problems. However, the statistical test pointed out that Mallows-Ulam EDA is the most stable algorithm among the studied proposals.
