Transaction is a common technique to ensure system consistency but incurs high overhead. Recent flash memory techniques enable efficient embedded transaction support inside solid state drives (SSDs). In this paper, we propose a new embedded transaction mechanism, TxCache, for SSDs with non-volatile disk cache. TxCache revises cache management of disk cache to support transactions using two techniques. First, it persists new-version data in non-volatile disk cache in a shadow way while protecting old-version data from being overwritten. Second, it uses pointers and flags leveraging the byte-addressability to cluster pages of each transaction and manage transaction status. The non-volatility and byte-addressability properties make TxCache an efficient transaction design. Experiments using file system and database workloads show performance improvement up to 46.0% and lifetime extension up to 33.8% compared to a recent transactional SSD design.

This paper discusses a face image abstraction method by using SIFT features and Ford-Fulkerson algorithm. Ford-Fulkerson algorithm is used to compute the maximum flow in a flow network drawn on SIFT features extracted from a face image. The idea is to obtain an augmenting path which is a path from the source vertex to destination vertex with the available capacities on all edges along a set of paths and flow is calculated along one of these paths. The process is repeated until it is obtained more paths with the available capacities. At the initial stage, face image is characterized by SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) features and the keypoints descriptor information is taken as features set for further processing. Keypoints descriptor is used to generate several face representations by using a series of matrix operations which are further used to determine a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). The resultant directed graph contains sparse and distinctive face characteristics of a subject from which the face image is captured. We then apply the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm on the directed graph to maintain the capacity constraints, skew symmetry and flow conservation to obtain an augmenting path with available capacities (relation between SIFT points). Finally, we obtain a mathematical representation of a face image and this representation is further encoded to be used as a set of distinctive features for matching. The time complexity of the proposed face abstraction algorithm is found to be O(VE 2 ) where V is the set of vertices and E is the set of edges in a directed graph.

Calling context has been widely used in many software development processes such as testing, event logging, and program analysis. It plays an even more important role in data race detection and performance bottleneck analysis for multi-threaded programs. This paper presents DACCE (Dynamic and Adaptive Calling Context Encoding), an efficient runtime encoding/decoding mechanism for single-threaded and multi-threaded programs that captures dynamic calling contexts. It can dynamically encode all call paths invoked at runtime, and adjust the encodings according to program's execution behavior. In contrast to existing context encoding method, DACCE can work on incomplete call graph, and it does not require source code analysis and offline profiling to conduct context encoding. DACCE has significantly expanded the functionality and applicability of calling context with even lower runtime overhead. DACCE is very efficient based on experiments with SPEC CPU2006 and Parsec 2.1 (with about 2% of runtime overhead) and effective for all tested benchmarks.

One of the main objectives of the ANTARES telescope is the search for point-like neutrino sources. Both the pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector are important in this context and a reliable way to evaluate this performance is needed. In order to measure the pointing accuracy of the detector, one possibility is to study the shadow of the Moon, i.e. the deficit of the atmospheric muon flux from the direction of the Moon induced by the absorption of cosmic rays. Analysing the data taken between 2007 and 2016, the Moon shadow is observed with 3.5σ statistical significance. The detector angular resolution for downward-going muons is 0.73◦ ± 0.14◦. The resulting pointing performance is consistent with the expectations. An independent check of the telescope pointing accuracy is realised with the data collected by a shower array detector onboard of a ship temporarily moving around the ANTARES location. The existence of diffuse Galactic neutrino production is expected from cosmic ray interactions with Galactic gas and radiation fields. Thus, neutrinos are a unique messenger offering the opportunity to test the products of Galactic cosmic ray interactions up to energies of hundreds of TeV. Here we present a search for this production using ten years of ANTARES track and shower data, as well as seven years of IceCube track data. The data are combined into a joint likelihood test for neutrino emission according to the KRAγ model assuming a 5 PeV per nucleon Galactic cosmic ray cutoff. No significant excess is found. As a consequence, the limits presented in this work start constraining the model parameter space for Galactic cosmic ray production and transport. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The western world enjoys a far greater degree of sophistication in computer technology than the developing world; challenges include the fact that infrastructure and resources in the developing world lag far behind; education to use and maintain the technology is often lacking; and cultural and societal issues prohibit its use. Questions include: What is the role of the first world in promoting more widespread use of technology for health informatics? What are the advantages to the first world in promoting more widespread use? What is the role of scientists in the first world in developing technology suitable for less technologically savvy regions? Should we interfere in cultures that do not use technology as we do? What can we practically expect to positively influence by engaging with developing world? How do we engage with the developing world in a sustainable way? Finally, modern vaccines have made huge differences in health the world over; can we expect similar positive transformation from increased computer/information technology in the developing world?

AbFS is a distributed file system that makes it possible to efficiently share the inexpensive devices attached to the commodity computers of a cluster. The implementation of AbFS offers high-performance metadata management by combining hashing and tables in several levels, hierarchical structures and caches, and by combining the attributes and the namespace in the same structure. No additional layers are needed to implement caches because AbFS uses the Linux metadata caches, inode and dentry, to implement them. Along with the description of the proposed implementation for metadata management and the comparison with other implementations, this work provides experimental results to evaluate its performance obtained with a prototype made from scratch at kernel level. AbFS experimental results show that the implementation proposed is capable to manage files and directories with high performance. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Developing an efficient and highly scalable ray tracer for the Metropolis light transport algorithm is becoming increasingly important as the request for photorealistic images becomes a common trend. Although the Metropolis light transport algorithm has produced some of the most realistic images to date, it usually takes a great amount of time to render an image. The development of an efficient and highly scalable ray tracer for the Metropolis light transport algorithm is hard due in large part to the irregular memory access patterns, the imbalanced workload of light-carrying paths and the complicated mathematical model and complex physical processes. In this paper, we present a highly scalable physically based parallel ray tracer for the Metropolis light transport algorithm. Firstly, we present the idea of snapshot and sub-snapshot, then propose a novel assignment partitioning algorithm for compute nodes and CPU cores since the demand-driven assignment partitioning algorithms don't work. Secondly, we propose a physically based parallel ray racing framework for the Metropolis light transport algorithm, which is based on a master-worker architecture. Finally, we discuss the issue of granularity of the assignment partitioning and some optimization strategies for improving overall performance, then a hybrid scheduling strategy combining a static and dynamic scheduling strategy is described. Experiments show that our physically based ray tracer almost reaches linear speedup by using 26,400 CPU cores on the Tianhe-2 supercomputer. Our ray tracer is more efficient and highly scalable.

Next-generation wireless networks integrate multiple wireless access technologies to provide seamless wireless connectivity for mobile nodes (MNs). When MNs move in wireless heterogeneous networks, they may suffer from the great degradation of received signal strength (RSS) and further quality of services (QoS), if randomly selecting an access point (AP). We address vertical handoff with game theory to enable MNs to trigger the handoff and select an appropriate network from multiple wireless access technologies. On the other hand, the existing vertical handoff schemes lack of jointly considering the behaviors of MNs and APs for approaching the reality. To solve this problem, we propose a repeated game based scheme for vertical handoff. Each sub-game is formulated as a non-cooperative strategic game between a MN and an AP in which the Nash equilibrium is the solution of each strategic game. The proposed repeated game is to optimize the utility functions of the whole network by finding an equilibrium point. We perform the performance analysis, which shows that proposed scheme can achieve better bandwidth utilization and throughput of the network compared to the AP random selection scheme.
