Construction Crew Productivity Prediction by Using Data Mining Methods

Ceramic tiling industry has become one of Turkey's fastest growing industries due to the outstanding achievements of Turkish ceramic producers with respect to producing high quality products with lower costs than their equivalents worldwide. Conversely high costs of the end product of Turkish building industry in general show that there is an important problem with the productivity and quality of construction crews. That's why most construction firms begin to realize the need for a detailed research on the factors affecting construction crew productivity. The purpose of this study is thus to classify the factors that affect the productivity of ceramic tiling crews by using data mining methods. To achieve the purpose of our study, a systematic time study was undertaken with ceramic tiling crews in Turkey. Daily productivity values of ceramic tiling crews were collected together with the information related with the factors like the crew size, age and experience of crewmembers. Collected data was classified by using Weka program. The outlier values were first removed from the dataset and decision tree method was used to classify the new dataset. Decision tree method was preferred due to its easiness of use and rapidness in classification. Apriori algorithm, which is the mostly preferred association algorithm in previous studies, was also used to highlight the general trend in the dataset.

The Natomas basin is a 21,450 hectare area north of downtown Sacramento. The developed area relies on levees for flood protection along its entire perimeter. The western boundary is a 29.9 km long levee that protects the area from flooding by the Sacramento River. Since its construction more than a century ago, this clay-capped sand levee has experienced a myriad of performance issues stemming from excessive under- and through-seepage. Recently, a team of engineers completed design and construction of remedial measures with the objective of ending the historic performance issues. From the United States Army Corps of Engineers Levee Stations 576+00 to 602+00, the Sacramento River and levee make a bend of about 95 degrees at a constant levee radius of about 488 m. During the recent design processes, the levee was analyzed using a two-dimensional plane strain model, despite this relatively sharp convex bend. This paper presents a case study that uses the plane strain and axisymmetric numerical models to directly compare the results of seepage and slope stability analyses. The computed gradients for the axisymmetric case are higher than those computed using a plane strain formulation. The increase is not systematic and is unique to each cross-section. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

The area, which includes an international airport, a civic sports arena, commercial developments, and extensive residential neighborhoods, relies on levees for flood protection along its entire perimeter. The western boundary is a 29.9 km (18.6 mile) long levee that is intended to protect it from flooding by the Sacramento River. Since its construction in the early 1900s, this clay-capped sand levee has experienced a myriad of performance issues stemming from excessive under- and through-seepage. Recently, engineers completed design and construction of remedial measures with the objective of mitigating the historic performance issues. Citing deep and varying bathymetry along the center of the Sacramento River channel, the vertical boundary was modeled as a constant-head boundary. The numerical models and the resulting engineering alternatives and designs were reviewed and approved by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and a blue-ribbon panel of recognized levee experts. This case study will use numerical models established at three different cross-sections to compare the consequences of modeling the vertical boundary along the centerline of the river with a constant-head or a flowline boundary condition. The paper demonstrates that a flowline boundary condition is technically correct and at (and beyond) the toe of the levee results in seepage gradients that are less than or equal to those computed when using a constant head condition. Where the river bottom is lined with low permeability blanket materials, the use of a constant head boundary condition provides seepage gradients and stability factors of safety that are excessively conservative. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

In most computer games as in life, the outcome of a match is uncertain due to several reasons: the characters or assets appear in different initial positions or the response of the player, even if programmed, is not deterministic;different matches will yield different scores. That is a problem when optimizing a game-playing engine: its fitness will be noisy, and if we use an evolutionary algorithm it will have to deal with it. This is not straightforward since there is an inherent uncertainty in the true value of the fitness of an individual, or rather whether one chromosome is better than another, thus making it preferable for selection. Several methods based on implicit or explicit average or changes in the selection of individuals for the next generation have been proposed in the past, but they involve a substantial redesign of the algorithm and the software used to solve the problem. In this paper we propose new methods based on incremental computation (memory-based) or fitness average or, additionally, using statistical tests to impose a partial order on the population;this partial order is considered to assign a fitness value to every individual which can be used straightforwardly in any selection function. Tests using several hard combinatorial optimization problems show that, despite an increased computation time with respect to the other methods, both memory-based methods have a higher success rate than implicit averaging methods that do not use memory;however, there is not a clear advantage in success rate or algorithmic terms of one method over the other.

Energy efficiency is a primary design concern for embedded multiprocessor system-on-chips (MPSoCs). Recently, Voltage-Frequency Island (VFI) - based design paradigm was introduced for fine-grained power management, which can seamlessly combine with the task scheduling algorithm to optimize system energy. However, the ever-increasing variabilities cause large uncertainty on delay and power. Such statistical nature in performance parameters easily makes deterministic energy optimization hard to achieve desirable performance yield, defined as the probability of the design meeting timing constraints of the system. In this paper, we propose a variation-aware statistical energy optimization framework, which takes account of performance yield constraints in energy-aware task scheduling, voltage assignment and VFI partitioning process. Energy optimization sensitivity, defined as energy variations of the task under voltage scaling, combines with the statistical slack of the task to guide the overall optimization flow. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Programs written in Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) languages can access any location of the entire address space via standard read/write operations. However, the compiler have to create the communication mechanisms and the runtime system to use synchronization primitives to ensure the correct execution of the programs. However, PGAS programs may have fine-grained shared accesses that lead to performance degradation. One solution is to use the inspector-executor technique to determine which accesses are indeed remote and which accesses may be coalesced in larger remote access operations. A straightforward implementation of the inspector-executor in a PGAS system may result in excessive instrumentation that hinders performance. This paper introduces a shared-data localization transformation based on linear memory descriptors (LMADs) that reduces the amount of instrumentation introduced by the compiler into programs written in the UPC language and describes a prototype implementation of the proposed transformation. A performance evaluation, using up to 2048 cores of a POWER 775 supercomputer, allows for a prediction that applications with regular accesses can achieve up to 180% of the performance of handoptimized versions while applications with irregular accesses yield performance gain from 1.12X up to 6.3X speedup.

In the past decade, a new class of bright transient radio sources with millisecond duration has been discovered. The origin of these so-called Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) is still a great mystery despite the growing observational efforts made by various multi-wavelength and multi-messenger facilities. So far, many models have been proposed to explain FRBs but neither the progenitors nor the radiative and the particle acceleration processes at work have been clearly identified. In this paper, the question whether some hadronic processes may occur in the vicinity of the FRB source is assessed. If so, FRBs may contribute to the high energy cosmic-ray and neutrino fluxes. A search for these hadronic signatures has been done using the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The analysis consists in looking for high-energy neutrinos, in the TeV-PeV regime, spatially and temporally coincident with the detected FRBs. Most of the FRBs discovered in the period 2013-2017 were in the field of view of the ANTARES detector, which is sensitive mostly to events originating from the Southern hemisphere. From this period, 12 FRBs have been selected and no coincident neutrino candidate was observed. Upper limits on the per burst neutrino fluence have been derived using a power law spectrum, dEdNν ∝ Eν−γ, for the incoming neutrino flux, assuming spectral indexes γ = 1.0, 2.0, 2.5. Finally, the neutrino energy has been constrained by computing the total energy radiated in neutrinos assuming different distances for the FRBs. Cherenkov light induced by radioactive decay products is one of the major sources of background light for deep-sea neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES. These decays are at the same time a powerful calibration source. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from mid 2008 to 2017, the time evolution of the photon detection efficiency of optical modules is studied. A modest loss of only 20% in 9 years is observed. The relative time calibration between adjacent modules is derived as well. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The ANTARES neutrino telescope has an energy threshold of a few tens of GeV. This allows to study the phenomenon of atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance due to neutrino oscillations. In a similar way, constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model, which foresees the existence of one sterile neutrino, can be inferred. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2016, a new measurement of ∆m232 and θ23 has been performed - which is consistent with world best-fit values - and constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model have been derived. A common problem with feature selection is to establish how many features should be retained at least so that important information is not lost. We describe a method for choosing this number that makes use of Support Vector Machines. The method is based on controlling an angle by which the decision hyperplane is tilt due to feature selection. Experiments were performed on three text datasets generated from a Wikipedia dump. Amount of retained information was estimated by classification accuracy. Even though the method is parametric, we show that, as opposed to other methods, once its parameter is chosen it can be applied to a number of similar problems (e.g. one value can be used for various datasets originating from Wikipedia). For a constant value of the parameter, dimensionality was reduced by from 78% to 90%, depending on the data set. Relative accuracy drop due to feature removal was less than 0.5% in those experiments. © Springer-Verlag 2013.
