Logging users' physical context through the sensors of mobile devices and the abilities to track users' online behavior has increasingly evolved. In this poster abstract we will present a work in progress in understanding how various stakeholders can be connected through context logging technologies, and the underlying motivations. We will (1) describe the general components and information flow of context logging systems, (2) frame the primary stakeholders from the context logging point of view, (3) discuss the application areas through the different stakeholders and their goals for applying context logging. Moreover, we will present ContextLogger3, a context-logging tool that combines automatically acquired sensor and mobile activity data and manually user created textual notes. We conclude by suggesting that designers should systematically consider implementing affordances for fostering design conversation between the users that log/are logged and the other stakeholders. We also suggest considering affordances that enable users to have manual control on context logging to narrow the gap between the realities represented by the automatic context logging and those perceived by the user. © 2013 Authors.

IEC 61850 is one of the crucial standards within the Smart Grid concept. For performance evaluation of communications between Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) in Power Utility Automation, the standard defines the Transfer Time. Measurement of such parameter is not available for end user, but in development stage it is possible. Third party products can be used to reduce development time of IEC 61850 compliant devices. An initial performance evaluation of these products can be achieved through the measurement of the Transfer Time.

Different logotypes represent significant cues for video annotations. A combination of temporal and spatial segmentation methods can be used for logo extraction from various video contents. To achieve this segmentation, pixels with low variation of intensity over time are detected. Static backgrounds can become spurious parts of these logos. This paper offers a new way to use several segmentations of logos to learn new logo models from which noise has been removed. First, we group segmented logos of similar appearances into different clusters. Then, a model is learned for each cluster that has a minimum number of members. This is done by applying a linear inverse diffusion filter to all logos in each cluster. Our experiments demonstrate that this filter removes most of the noise that was added to the logo during segmentation and it successfully copes with misclassified logos that have been wrongly added to a cluster. © 2013 IEEE.

Application code and processor parallelization, together with instruction set customization, are the most common and effective ways to enhance the performance and efficiency of application-specific processors (ASIPs). Both the effective code parallelization and data/task parallelism exploitation, as well as effective instruction set customization, enable an ASIP to achieve a significant performance improvement using limited extra hardware resources. However, a naive parallelization or instruction set customization may not result in the required performance improvement, leading to a waste of computing and energy resources. Therefore, when performing parallelization or custom instruction selection, complex tradeoffs between processing speed, circuit area and power consumption must be closely observed. In this paper, we propose and discuss an efficient ASIP-based Multi-Processor System-on-a-Chip (MPSoC) design for ray-tracing, exploiting application parallelism and hardware replication-aware instruction set customization. Without hardware sharing among the custom instructions units, the proposed parallel ray-tracer MPSoC design with custom instructions achieves 77% speed up in comparison to a single microprocessor design with the default instruction set. However, with the replication-aware instruction set customization, the speed up increases to 81%. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

This paper presents an evaluation of three communication-efficient algorithms implementing the Omega class of failure detectors, which provides an eventual leader election functionality, in distributed systems where processes can crash and recover. Communication efficiency means that eventually only a correct process, i.e., the elected leader, keeps sending a message periodically to the rest of processes. The first algorithm relies on the use of stable storage to store the identity of the leader and an incarnation number. The second algorithm does not use stable storage, but requires a majority of correct processes. Also, it is near-communication-efficient, since besides the leader, unstable processes, i.e., those that crash and recover infinitely often, may send messages periodically before they receive a message from the leader. Finally, the third algorithm does neither use stable storage nor require a majority of correct processes, but assumes that each process has access to a nondecreasing and persistent local clock. Using the OMNeT++ network simulation framework, we evaluate the performance and the quality of service provided by these algorithms, in terms of the number of messages exchanged among processes and the capability of the failure detector to provide a single leader, respectively.

Muons created by νµ charged current (CC) interactions in the water surrounding the ANTARES neutrino telescope have been almost exclusively used so far in searches for cosmic neutrino sources. Due to their long range, highly energetic muons inducing Cherenkov radiation in the water are reconstructed with dedicated algorithms that allow the determination of the parent neutrino direction with a median angular resolution of about 0.4◦ for an E−2 neutrino spectrum. In this paper, an algorithm optimised for accurate reconstruction of energy and direction of shower events in the ANTARES detector is presented. Hadronic showers of electrically charged particles are produced by the disintegration of the nucleus both in CC and neutral current (NC) interactions of neutrinos in water. In addition, electromagnetic showers result from the CC interactions of electron neutrinos while the decay of a tau lepton produced in ντ CC interactions will in most cases lead to either a hadronic or an electromagnetic shower. A shower can be approximated as a point source of photons. With the presented method, the shower position is reconstructed with a precision of about 1 m;the neutrino direction is reconstructed with a median angular resolution between 2◦ and 3◦ in the energy range of 1 TeV to 1000 TeV. In this energy interval, the uncertainty on the reconstructed neutrino energy is about 5 % to 10 %. The increase in the detector sensitivity due to the use of additional information from shower events in the searches for a cosmic neutrino flux is also presented. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. A search for cosmic neutrino sources using the data collected with the ANTARES neutrino telescope between early 2007 and the end of 2015 is performed. For the first time, all neutrino interactions –charged and neutral current interactions of all flavors– are considered in a search for point-like sources with the ANTARES detector. In previous analyses, only muon neutrino charged current interactions were used. This is achieved by using a novel reconstruction algorithm for shower-like events in addition to the standard muon track reconstruction. The shower channel contributes about 23% of all signal events for an E−2 energy spectrum. No significant excess over background is found. The most signal-like cluster of events is located at (α, δ) = (343.8◦, 23.5◦) with a significance of 1.9σ. The neutrino flux sensitivity of the search is about E2dΦ/dE = 6 × 10−9 GeV cm−2 s−1 for declinations from −90◦ up to −42◦, and below 10−8 GeV cm−2 s−1 for declinations up to 5◦. The directions of 106 source candidates and of 13 muon track events from the IceCube HESE sample are investigated for a possible neutrino signal and upper limits on the signal flux are determined. The flux of very high-energy neutrinos produced in our Galaxy by the interaction of accelerated cosmic rays with the interstellar medium is not yet determined. The characterization of this flux will shed light on Galactic accelerator features, gas distribution morphology and Galactic cosmic ray transport. The central Galactic plane can be the site of an enhanced neutrino production, thus leading to anisotropies in the extraterrestrial neutrino signal as measured by the IceCube Collaboration. The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located in the Mediterranean Sea, offers a favourable view on this part of the sky, thereby allowing for a contribution to the determination of this flux. The expected diffuse Galactic neutrino emission can be obtained linking a model of generation and propagation of cosmic rays with the morphology of the gas distribution in the Milky Way. In this paper, the so-called "Gamma model" introduced recently to explain the high-energy gamma ray diffuse Galactic emission, is assumed as reference. The neutrino flux predicted by the "Gamma model" depends of the assumed primary cosmic ray spectrum cut-off. Considering a radially-dependent diffusion coefficient, this proposed scenario is able to account for the local cosmic ray measurements, as well as for the Galactic gamma ray observations. Nine years of ANTARES data are used in this work to search for a possible Galactic contribution according to this scenario. All flavour neutrino interactions are considered. No excess of events is observed and an upper limit is set on the neutrino flux of 1.1 (1.2) times the prediction of the "Gamma model" assuming the primary cosmic ray spectrum cut-off at 5 (50) PeV. This limit excludes the diffuse Galactic neutrino emission as the major cause of the "spectral anomaly" between the two hemispheres measured by IceCube. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. The principles of a search for high energy neutrino emission in coincidence with very high energy (VHE;0.1-100 TeV) gamma-ray flares from two bright extragalactic sources, based on the data collected in 2012-2016 by the ANTARES neutrino detector and High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory, are presented. The ANTARES telescope observes with high duty cycle an instantaneous field of view of 2π. To study variable sources like blazars, it is crucial to achieve unbiased monitoring and an instrument like HAWC is capable of long term and continuous monitoring of the source with nearly 100% duty cycle. Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) are the brightest and the closest BL Lac objects known. In contrast to other types of active galactic nuclei (AGN), BL Lacs are characterized by rapid and large-amplitude flux variability. Such radio-loud AGNs with collimated jets aligned to the line of sight, are candidate sources of the observed high energy cosmic rays and of accompanying neutrinos and gamma rays produced in hadronic interactions with the surrounding medium.
