The 3D point cloud (3DPC) has significantly evolved and benefited from the advance of deep learning (DL). However, the latter faces various issues, including the lack of data or annotated data, the existence of a significant gap between training data and test data, and the requirement for high computational resources. To that end, deep transfer learning (DTL), which decreases dependency and costs by utilizing knowledge gained from a source data/task in training a target data/task, has been widely investigated. Numerous DTL frameworks have been suggested for aligning point clouds obtained from several scans of the same scene. Additionally, DA, which is a subset of DTL, has been modified to enhance the point cloud data’s quality by dealing with noise and missing points. Ultimately, fine-tuning and DA approaches have demonstrated their effectiveness in addressing the distinct difficulties inherent in point cloud data. This paper presents the first review shedding light on this aspect. it provides a comprehensive overview of the latest techniques for understanding 3DPC using DTL and domain adaptation (DA). Accordingly, DTL’s background is first presented along with the datasets and evaluation metrics. A well-defined taxonomy is introduced, and detailed comparisons are presented, considering different aspects such as different knowledge transfer strategies, and performance. The paper covers various applications, such as 3DPC object detection, semantic labeling, segmentation, classification, registration, downsampling/upsampling, and denoising. Furthermore, the article discusses the advantages and limitations of the presented frameworks, identifies open challenges, and suggests potential research directions. © 2024, CC BY.

Much of Western classical music relies on instruments based on acoustic resonance, which produce harmonic or quasi-harmonic sounds. In contrast, since the mid-twentieth century, popular music has increasingly been produced in recording studios, where it is not bound by the constraints of harmonic sounds. In this study, we use modified MPEG-7 features to explore and characterise the evolution of noise and inharmonicity in popular music since 1961. We place this evolution in the context of other broad categories of music, including Western classical piano music, orchestral music, andmusique concrète. We introduce new features that distinguish between inharmonicity caused by noise and that resulting from interactions between discrete partials. Our analysis reveals that the history of popular music since 1961 can be divided into three phases. From 1961 to 1972, inharmonicity in popular music, initially only slightly higher than in orchestral music, increased significantly. Between 1972 and 1986, this rise in inharmonicity was accompanied by an increase in noise, but since 1986, both inharmonicity and noise have moderately decreased. In recent years (up to 2020), popular music has remained much more inharmonic than popular music from the 1960s or orchestral music involving acoustic resonance instruments. However, it has become less noisy, with noise levels comparable to those of orchestral music. We relate these trends to the evolution of music production techniques. In particular, the use of multi-tracking may explain the higher inharmonicity in popular music compared to orchestral music. We illustrate these trends with analyses of key artists and tracks.

This study focuses on the application of the YOLOv3 (You Only Look Once version 3) object detection algorithm for the analysis of concrete cracks and fatigue within Smart Cities. Concrete infrastructure plays a crucial role in urban environments, and its structural integrity is paramount for ensuring public safety and sustainable development. The proposed approach utilizes YOLOv3 to identify and localize instances of concrete cracks and signs of fatigue in images and videos captured from various urban settings. By leveraging deep learning techniques, this research aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of monitoring and maintaining concrete structures, contributing to the overall resilience and longevity of Smart Cities. The findings of this study present valuable insights into the potential of utilizing advanced computer vision methods for proactive infrastructure management in the urban landscape.

Physico-mechanical properties of rocks have a direct correlation with the drilling rate of percussive drill. The prediction of drilling rate is important for the deployment of drills during the planning stage. In tropical climatic regions, limestone is classified as blocky, very blocky, blocky/ seamy and disintegrated based on the degree of weathering. Weathering of limestone takes place very rapidly in tropical (wet) climatic regions. Previous researchers have correlated different individual rock mass properties with rate of drilling. However, single property of limestone is not adequate to correlate with the drilling rate. In this study, sensitivity analysis of different properties of weathered limestone was carried out with respect to drilling rate. Rock density, rock quality designation (RQD), geological strength index (GSI), point load index (PLI) and Schmidt hammer rebound number (SHRN) were identified as crucial input parameters. 113 data sets were collected with the foregoing five input parameters and the output parameter as drilling rate of percussive drills. Data was analysed with multi variable regression analysis (MVRA) which showed R2 value as 0.54. Artificial neural network (ANN) has been widely used for solving various engineering problems. On the other hand, optimization problems are solved by the Biogeography Based Optimization (BBO) model. Further this data was analysed with a hybrid intelligent model namely BBO- ANN. Compared to natural images, hyperspectral images (HSIs) consist of a large number of bands, with each band capturing different spectral information from a certain wavelength, even some beyond the visible spectrum. These characteristics of HSIs make them highly effective for remote sensing applications. That said, the existing hyperspectral imaging devices introduce severe degradation in HSIs. Hence, hyperspectral image denoising has attracted lots of attention by the community lately. While recent deep HSI denoising methods have provided effective solutions, their performance under real-life complex noise remains suboptimal, as they lack adaptability to new data. To overcome these limitations, in our work, we introduce a self-modulating convolutional neural network which we refer to as SM-CNN, which utilizes correlated spectral and spatial information. At the core of the model lies a novel block, which we call spectral self-modulating residual block (SSMRB), that allows the network to transform the features in an adaptive manner based on the adjacent spectral data, enhancing the network’s ability to handle complex noise. In particular, the introduction of SSMRB transforms our denoising network into a dynamic network that adapts its predicted features while denoising every input HSI with respect to its spatio-spectral characteristics. Experimental analysis on both synthetic and real data shows that the proposed SM-CNN outperforms other state-of-the-art HSI denoising methods both quantitatively and qualitatively on public benchmark datasets. Monetary authorities globally have studied central bank digital currency (CBDC) for wholesale and retail applications since the 1990s. Besides countering private cryptocurrencies' influence, central banks have also explored other benefits of CBDC, such as improving their financial oversight, enhancing digital payment systems, and reducing transaction fees and friction. For several years, the Bank of Thailand has also invested in research and development of CBDC, including retail use cases. However, an optimized design for an official launch of a retail CBDC in Thailand has yet to be determined, resembling fragmented progress observed among other central banks. This research has leveraged disruptive innovation theory to provide a fresh perspective on retail CBDC as potentially disruptive financial innovations. Additionally, it has proposed an open innovation-based methodology to determine industry preferences concerning twelve design considerations for retail CBDC and their impact on nine indicators of disruptive innovation. Data has been collected and analyzed from 98 respondents outside the Bank of Thailand, all possessing relevant expertise or experience in electronic payments. Crosstab and logistic regression analyses have indicated that retail CBDC in Thailand could embark on a disruptive innovation trajectory by adhering to defined design choices. Significantly, entering a new detached market has been identified as the most promising entry point, accompanied by explicit recommendations on nine out of twelve design considerations. © 2025 The Authors

Object pose estimation is a fundamental computer vision problem with broad applications in augmented reality and robotics. Over the past decade, deep learning models, due to their superior accuracy and robustness, have increasingly supplanted conventional algorithms reliant on engineered point pair features. Nevertheless, several challenges persist in contemporary methods, including their dependency on labeled training data, model compactness, robustness under challenging conditions, and their ability to generalize to novel unseen objects. A recent survey discussing the progress made on different aspects of this area, outstanding challenges, and promising future directions, is missing. To fill this gap, we discuss the recent advances in deep learning-based object pose estimation, covering all three formulations of the problem, i.e., instance-level, category-level, and unseen object pose estimation. Our survey also covers multiple input data modalities, degrees-of-freedom of output poses, object properties, and downstream tasks, providing the readers with a holistic understanding of this field. Additionally, it discusses training paradigms of different domains, inference modes, application areas, evaluation metrics, and benchmark datasets, as well as reports the performance of current state-of-the-art methods on these benchmarks, thereby facilitating the readers in selecting the most suitable method for their application. Finally, the survey identifies key challenges, reviews the prevailing trends along with their pros and cons, and identifies promising directions for future research. On the exploitation of neuroevolutionary information: Analyzing the past for a more efficient future

Neuroevolutionary algorithms, automatic searches of neural network structures by means of evolutionary techniques, are computationally costly procedures. In spite of this, due to the great performance provided by the architectures which are found, these methods are widely applied. The final outcome of neuroevolutionary processes is the best structure found during the search, and the rest of the procedure is commonly omitted in the literature. However, a good amount of residual information consisting of valuable knowledge that can be extracted is also produced during these searches. In this paper, we propose an approach that extracts this information from neuroevolutionary runs, and use it to build a metamodel that could positively impact future neural architecture searches. More specifically, by inspecting the best structures found during neuroevolutionary searches of generative adversarial networks with varying characteristics (e.g., based on dense or convolutional layers), we propose a Bayesian network-based model which can be used to either find strong neural structures right away, conveniently initialize different structural searches for different problems, or help future optimization of structures of any type to keep finding increasingly better structures where uninformed methods get stuck into local optima. © 2021, CC BY.
