This paper presents a deeply pipelined and massively parallel Binary Search Tree (BST) accelerator for Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Our design relies on the extremely parallel on-chip memory, or Block RAMs (BRAMs) architecture of FPGAs. To achieve significant throughput for the search operation on BST, we present several novel mechanisms including tree duplication as well as horizontal, duplicated, and hybrid (horizontal-vertical) tree partitioning. Also, we present efficient techniques to decrease the stalling rates that can occur during the parallel tree search. By combining these techniques and implementations on Xilinx Virtex-7 VC709 platform, we achieve up to 8X throughput improvement gain in comparison to the baseline implementation, i.e., a fully-pipelined FPGA-based accelerator. © 2019 IEEE.

Feature selection plays a critical role in the application of Brain computer Interface (BCI) systems. Many methods have been used to solve the feature selection problem, but they model it as a single-objective problem, considering only classification accuracy or number of features. To close this critical gap, we improve the squirrel search algorithm by combining it with the grid method, and propose a Multi-Objective Squirrel Search Algorithm (MOSSA) to solve the feature selection problem in BCI. We conduct experiments on three publicly available motion imagery datasets, and the experimental results reveal the best classification results of the method on dataset 1. The average classification accuracy of dataset 2 is 96.71%, with the number of selected features reduced to 18 on average. The highest classification accuracy of dataset 3 is 83.57% on the training set and 82.86% on the test set. In addition, we compare MOSSA with other algorithms and the results show the superiority of our proposed method in solving the feature selection problem. Finally, we combine MOSSA with an online application of BCI, where subjects visualise controlling the robot to perform the corresponding actions by the left and right hand movements. The average recognition rate of the three subjects is approximately 70%. Consider a sensor network consisting of both anchor and non-anchor nodes. We address the following sensor network localization (SNL) problem: given the physical locations of anchor nodes and relative measurements among all nodes, determine the locations of all non-anchor nodes. The solution to the SNL problem is challenging due to its inherent non-convexity. In this paper, the problem takes on the form of a multi-player nonconvex potential game in which canonical duality theory is used to define a complementary dual potential function. After showing the Nash equilibrium (NE) correspondent to the SNL solution, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a stationary point to coincide with the NE. An algorithm is proposed_ to reach the NE and shown to have convergence rate O(1/√k). With the aim of reducing the information exchange within a network, a distributed algorithm for NE seeking is implemented and its global convergence analysis is provided. Extensive simulations show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed approach to solve the SNL problem. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We built a spatial hybrid system that combines a personal computer (PC) and virtual reality (VR) for visual sensemaking, addressing limitations in both environments. Although VR offers immense potential for interactive data visualization (e.g., large display space and spatial navigation), it can also present challenges such as imprecise interactions and user fatigue. At the same time, a PC offers precise and familiar interactions but has limited display space and interaction modality. Therefore, we iteratively designed a spatial hybrid system (PC+VR) to complement these two environments by enabling seamless switching between PC and VR environments. To evaluate the system's effectiveness and user experience, we compared it to using a single computing environment (i.e., PC-only and VR-only). Our study results (N=18) showed that spatial PC+VR could combine the benefits of both devices to outperform user preference for VR-only without a negative impact on performance from device switching overhead. Finally, we discussed future design implications. © 1995-2012 IEEE.

Due to the climate change, over the last decades there have been changes in the rhythm of nature. However, there is an increasing social consciousness regarding decarbonization, and governments include new policies and economic support measures for renewables. The participation of the onshore and offshore wind sectors play a central role in this scenario, expecting that more than 6000 GW will be globally installed in 2050. However, the useful life of many wind power plants is coming to their end, and thus, some countries will face in the coming years the decision of repowering, decommissioning, installing new turbines, or a combination of them. In general, such areas with the greatest wind potential are already occupied by relatively old wind turbines. Subsequently, a complex group of factors influences on the best solution decision-making: climatic, technological, environmental, social or economic. This paper proposes an optimized methodology based on multi-criteria decision-making to estimate the most appropriate solution for extending the useful-life of wind power plants. The methodology is divided into three stages: (i) data, (ii) alternatives and (iii) optimization. It was assessed with a Spanish onshore wind power plant connected to the grid. From the initial data, 11 alternatives were designed based on 10 selection factors. The results provide an optimal solution, combining both repowering and installation of new wind turbines. It would allow us to reduce the LCOE of the new wind plants installed in the European Union by more than 50%. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With the rapid development of the information and communication technology, the security requirement of the entrance guard control systems has significantly increased. In recent years, the rise and popularity of various portable smart devices, including traditional keys, inductive buckles, inductive magnetic disks, biometrics, and so on. It has been already ripe that the biometrics, especially the finger-print identification technology from intelligence mobile phones, intelligence watches, etc., has matured and become an important member of an entrance guard control system. This research is to enhance the entrance guard control management in the traditional rental housing industry with a new generation of intelligent ultrasonic bio-metric entrance guard control system. In addition to preventing loss of cards and copy of keys, the research can also have the feature of achieving remotely monitor of the rental situation of a rented house. Even if it is not in the local area, the security of the rental house can be immediately controlled by the system to achieve the optimization result of the unattended intelligent lease access control system. Autonomous driving has been a hot topic recently, so many industrial and academic groups are putting much engineering and research efforts into this topic. However, it is difficult for most researchers or students to afford a car as a research platform to conduct experiments for autonomous driving. Further, we believe that only when more people have the chance to make contributions will this area be more prosperous. Therefore, in this paper, we present HydraMini, an affordable experimental research and education platform supporting the experiments from hardware systems to vision algorithms, and its high flexibility makes it easily extended and modified. It is equipped with the Xilinx PYNQ-Z2 board as the computing platform, which deploys the Deep Learning Processing Unit (DPU) in FPGA to accelerate the deep learning inference. It also provides useful tools like a simulator for model training and testing in a virtual environment to facilitate the use of HydraMini. Our platform will help researchers and students build and test their own solutions for autonomous driving algorithms and systems easily and efficiently.

The most difficult component of any computer vision application objects recognition and tracking. Video surveillance is a major study subject in computer vision in a dynamic environment, especially for security purposes. Video surveillance technology is critical in preventing crime, terrorism, and other threats. Several existing technologies can accurately monitor a person's mobility in interior environments. As well as regulated outdoor settings, object recognition and tracking at night, on the other hand, remain significant challenges for visual surveillance. The objects are usually farther away, inconspicuous, and have low brightness against the background. In this paper, detecting objects specifically people under low lighting conditions with the help of deep learning algorithms was used. For applications like in-car cameras and surveillance systems that operate in low light, these algorithms might improve picture identification performance.

This paper presents the novel GPU-based parallel strategy for the heuristic algorithms to solve the large-scale Capacited Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). A combination of five improvement heuristic approaches has been used to improve the constructed feasible solution. It is noticed that a large amount of CPU time is spent in the solution improvement phase while improving a feasible solution. We aim to discover an independent part of the improvement heuristic approaches and make it run over the GPU platform simultaneously. The proposed parallel version has been tested on large-scale instances of up to 20000 customers. The parallel version offers speedup up to 176.12 × compared to the corresponding sequential version.

Distributed formation control of manipulators' end-effector with internal model-based disturbance rejection

This paper addresses the problem of end-effector formation control for manipulators that are subjected to external disturbances: input disturbance torques and disturbance forces at each end-effector. The disturbances are assumed to be non-vanishing and are superposition of finite number of sinusoidal and step signals. The formation control objective is achieved by assigning virtual springs between end-effectors, by adding damping terms at joints, and by incorporating internal model-based dynamic compensators to counteract the effect of the disturbances;all of which presents a clear physical interpretation of the proposed approach. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2021, CC BY.
