A new token-passing algorithm called AR-TP for avoiding the non-determinism of some networking technologies is presented. This protocol allows the schedulability analysis of the network, enabling the use of standard Ethernet hardware for hard real-time behavior while adding congestion management. This paper describes a simple system that can be used for autonomous demand-side management in a load site such as a home or commercial facility. The system identifies the operation of individual loads using transient patterns observed in the voltage waveform measured at an electric service outlet. The theoretical foundation of the measurement process is introduced, and a preprocessor that computes short-time estimates of the spectral content of the voltage waveform is described. The paper presents several example measurements demonstrating the ability of the system to obtain estimates of the spectral content of the voltage waveform.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system which is based on a contactless sensing identification technology causes dramatic change in the exiting business management strategies. The technologies in the fields of inventory automation and production automation will be highly promoted with the application of RFID. Today most research work of RFID applications concentrate on using RFID tag as a product description device. In this paper, we propose a new usage development. The RFID tag will also be treated as a portable electronic form. With uniqueness of every RFID tag and the digital signature technique, the RFID tag can be as a secured storage device. A demonstration system for the inventory works of yacht equipments suppliers is presented to show the workability of this new development. The most notable characteristic of this system is the non-interrupted e-process under the failure condition of computer network which will be switched to used manual process in before.

A scheme was obtained using synthesis of Petri nets sharing a kind of subnet, according to process of several enterprises sharing a plant to produce some product. First, the Petri net model of single enterprise in sharing a plant to produce some product was set up. Second, the global Petri net model was obtained through using shared subnet synthesis method. Using the global Petri net model people can actualize synchronization and save resources. Several conditions were proposed for the synthesis net of free choice nets (FC) {asymmetric choice nets (AC)} is a FC net {AC net}. Some conditions of the structural liveness preservation by the shared subnet synthesis of Petri nets were obtained. These results are useful for studying the properties of Petri synthesis nets and establishing models for large complex system.

In this paper, self-organizing maps (SOM) with growing capability are proposed to evaluate the goodness of multispectral training areas selection that would be used in supervised classification processes. The SOM model used in this study is the Growing Cell Structures (GCS) neural network. Some modifications of the original GCS training algorithm are proposed in order to make easy the physical interpretation of their parameters. In addition, several visualization methods have been implemented with the aim of displaying the trained GCS networks. The performances of the modified GCS model have been investigated through a large number of experiments. They have been carried out using multispectral data registered by ETM+ sensor (Landsat 7), to discriminate land cover categories. The results confirm the excellent behavior of the GCS modified training algorithm to evaluate the quality of the selected training patterns, their viability for feeding supervised classification models and their refining.

The accuracy of concrete strength inspection has a great influence on the safety evaluation of the building. In order to increase the accuracy, Fuzzy Neural Network (FNN) was built up to evaluate concrete stmngth: It takes full advantage of the characteristics of the common concrete testing methods: drill and rebound, and the abilities of FNN including automatic learning, generation and fuzzy logic inference. The experiment shows that the max relative error of the predicted results is 1.12%, which is satisfied with the requirements of the engineering. The method effieieatly maps the complex non-linear relationship between the drill values and the rebound values, and provides a efficient way for the concrete strength inspection and evaluation.

This paper presents a recurrent neural network-based approach for modal parameters identification of structure-unknown systems. The proposed approach involves two steps. The first step is to build a recurrent neural network to map the complex nonlinear relation between the excitations and responses of the structure-unknown system by off-line learning. The second step is to propose a procedure to determine the modal parameters of the system from the trained neural networks. The dynamic characteristics of the structure are directly evaluated from the weighting matrices of the trained recurrent neural network. Furthermore, an illustrative example demonstrates the feasibility of using the proposed method to identify modal parameters of structure-unknown systems. The method proposed can be used to research on fault diagnosis of engineer structure.

We present a comparison between different warning strategies for onboard rumble strips in order to prevent road departure events. We compare time-to-lane-crossing (TLC) approach and some implementations of variable rumble strip (VRBS). The framework of this study is the AWAKE European research project and the PREDIT French research program. The value of such a system is demonstrated by some field experiments and its validation by medical and self-diagnoses.

Research on humanoid robots has produced various uses for their body properties in communication. In particular, mutual relationships of body movements between a robot and a human are considered to be important for smooth and natural communication, as they are in human-human communication. We have developed a semi-autonomous humanoid robot system that is capable of cooperative body movements with humans using environment-based sensors and switching communicative units. And we conducted an experiment using this robot system and verified the importance of cooperative behaviors in a route-guidance situation where a human gives directions to the robot. This result indicates that the cooperative body movements greatly enhance the emotional impressions of human in a route-guidance situation. We believe these results allow us to develop interactive humanoid robots that sociably communicate with humans.

The U.S. department of Defense (DoD) has mandated the development of architectures to support the acquisition of systems that are interoperable and will meet the needs of military coalitions. This paper provides a general description of an architecting process based on object orientation and UML. It then provides a rationale for style constraints on the use of UML artifacts for representing DoD Command, Control, Communications, computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) architectures. Finally the paper describes a mapping between the UML artifacts and an executable model based on colored Petri nets that can be used for logical, behavioral, and performance evaluation of the architecture. A procedure for the conversion is also provided. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
