Comparison of edge computing methods in Internet of Things architectures for efficient estimation of indoor environmental parameters with Machine Learning

The large increase in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices have revolutionised the way data is processed, which added to the current trend from cloud to edge computing has resulted in the need for efficient and reliable data processing near the data sources using energy-efficient devices. Two methods based on low-cost edge-IoT architectures are proposed to implement lightweight Machine Learning (ML) models that estimate indoor environmental quality (IEQ) parameters, such as Artificial Neural Networks of Multilayer Perceptron type. Their implementation is based on centralised and distributed parallel IoT architectures, connected via wireless, which share commercial off-the-self modules for data acquisition and sensing, such as sensors for temperature, humidity, illuminance, CO2, and other gases. The centralised method uses a Graphics Processing Unit and the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport protocol, but the distributed method utilises low-performance ARM-based devices and the Message Passing Interface protocol. Although multiple IEQ parameters are measured, the training and testing of ML models is accomplished with experiments focused on small temperature and illuminance datasets to reduce data processing load, obtained from sudden spikes, square profiles and sawteeth test cases. The results show a high estimation performance with F-score and Accuracy values close to 0.95, and an almost theorical Speedup with a reduction in power consumption close to 37% in the distributed parallel approach. In addition, similar or slightly better performance is achieved compared to equivalent IoT architectures from related research, but error reduction of 35–76% is accomplished with an adequate balance between performance and energy efficiency. © 2024, CC BY.

Nowadays, the grid computing environment faces many difficulties executing new jobs, especially jobs requiring large resource requirements and long execution times. This motivates researchers and scholars to find cheap and fast methods to improve the efficiency of grid environments. One of the cheap and fast methods is to implement job scheduling algorithms based on cheap and fast techniques. This paper proposes a new job ranking backfilling algorithm based on the job's weight and back propagation neural network. To define the weight of the job, first, the proposed model will use a clustering algorithm to cluster the job's dataset into groups, and then the groups will be ranked using an experimental ranking equation. A discrete event simulator is used to validate the proposed algorithm's capability and robustness. The average results revealed that the new algorithm outperforms previous algorithms. The improvement of the studied metrics is between 1.19 and 6.30, respectively. The results proved that the proposed model is efficient and can be used with low overhead in a real environment.

User-facing applications running in modern datacenters exhibit irregular request patterns and are implemented using a multitude of services with tight latency requirements (30--250μs). These characteristics render existing energy-conserving techniques ineffective when processors are idle due to the long transition time (order of 100μs) from a deep CPU core idle power state (C-state). While prior works propose management techniques to mitigate this inefficiency, we tackle it at its root with AgileWatts (AW): a new deep CPU core C-state architecture optimized for datacenter server processors targeting latency-sensitive *** drastically reduces the transition latency from deep CPU core idle power states while retaining most of their power savings based on three key ideas. First, AW eliminates the latency (several microseconds) of saving/restoring the core context when powering-off/-on the core in a deep idle state by i) implementing medium-grained power-gates, carefully distributed across the CPU core, and ii) retaining context in the power-ungated domain. Second, AW eliminates the flush latency (several tens of microseconds) of the L1/L2 caches when entering a deep idle state by keeping L1/L2 content power-ungated. A small control logic also remains ungated to serve cache coherence traffic. AW implements cache sleep-mode and leakage reduction for the power-ungated domain by lowering a core's voltage to the minimum operational level. Third, using a state-of-the-art power efficient all-digital phase-locked loop (ADPLL) clock generator, AW keeps the PLL active and locked during the idle state, cutting microseconds of wake-up latency at negligible power *** evaluation with an accurate industrial-grade simulator calibrated against an Intel Skylake server shows that AW reduces the energy consumption of Memcached by up to 71% (35% on average) with <1% end-to-end performance degradation. We observe similar trends for other evaluated services (MySQL and Kafka).

Construction progress monitoring plays a crucial role in ensuring the timely and efficient completion of infrastructure projects within smart cities. This paper proposes a novel approach utilizing the Deep AlexNet architecture for construction progress assessment in smart cities. The Deep AlexNet model is trained on a diverse dataset of images captured from construction sites, enabling it to accurately analyze the visual cues indicative of construction advancement. By leveraging deep learning techniques, our system extracts and processes features from images, enabling automated and real-time progress evaluation. The proposed method contributes to enhancing construction management practices by providing stakeholders with a reliable tool to monitor and manage construction projects efficiently. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the Deep AlexNet-based approach in accurately assessing construction progress, thereby facilitating informed decision-making throughout the construction lifecycle. © 2023 IEEE.

We address distributed learning problems, both nonconvex and convex, over undirected networks. In particular, we design a novel algorithm based on the distributed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to address the challenges of high communication costs, and large datasets. Our design tackles these challenges i) by enabling the agents to perform multiple local training steps between each round of communications;and ii) by allowing the agents to employ stochastic gradients while carrying out local computations. We show that the proposed algorithm converges to a neighborhood of a stationary point, for nonconvex problems, and of an optimal point, for convex problems. We also propose a variant of the algorithm to incorporate variance reduction thus achieving exact convergence. We show that the resulting algorithm indeed converges to a stationary (or optimal) point, and moreover that local training accelerates convergence. Delay tolerant networks may become unexpectedly partitioned due to node mobility or variation in signal strength. However, most widely used models in some relative works are generally very simplistic. In order to exploit intelligent forwarding algorithms, a novel nodal mobile model of delay tolerant networks is presented to map reality with more accuracy. And several approaches are introduced to analyze the network structure, such as n-cliques, n-clans, degree, closeness and betweenness. Our research results showed that the centralizations became smaller when the wireless connections were concerned. It meant that quite a number of nodes became potential relays because of the new structure of networks.

Digital twins have a major potential to form a significant part of urban management in emergency planning, as they allow more efficient designing of the escape routes, better orientation in exceptional situations, and faster rescue intervention. Nevertheless, creating the twins still remains a largely manual effort, due to a lack of 3D-representations, which are available only in limited amounts for some new buildings. Thus, in this paper we aim to synthesize 3D information from commonly available 2D architectural floor plans. We propose two novel pixel-wise segmentation methods based on the MDA-Unet and MACU-Net architectures with improved skip connections, an attention mechanism, and a training objective together with a reconstruction part of the pipeline, which vectorizes the segmented plans to create a 3D model. The proposed methods are compared with two other state-of-the-art techniques and several benchmark datasets. On the commonly used CubiCasa benchmark dataset, our methods have achieved the mean F1 score of 0.86 over five examined classes, outperforming the other pixel-wise approaches tested. This tutorial aims to introduce Event Graphs (EGs), invented 40 years ago by Lee Schruben to allow event-based modeling of discrete dynamic systems. Their simplicity and naturalness in causality modelling and simulation modelling made EGs popular in research and practice. In a simulation, an event causes state changes in a system as well as other events to happen in the future. EGs provide a parsimonious diagram representation for the Event Scheduling paradigm of Discrete Event Simulation. We first introduce their visual syntax and informal semantics, and then present a recent extension by adding objects to EGs. Our tutorial also includes an introduction to the formal semantics of EGs and a Python implementation for executing EGs.

This one-day hybrid workshop builds on previous feminist CSCW workshops to explore feminist theoretical and methodological approaches that have provided us with useful tools to see things differently and make space for change. Since its inception over a decade ago, feminist HCI has progressed from the margins to mainstream HCI, with numerous references in the literature. Feminist HCI has also evolved to incorporate other critical HCI practices such as Queer HCI, participatory design, and speculative design. While feminist approaches have grown in popularity and become mainstream, it is getting more difficult to distinguish the feminist emancipatory core from other attempts of developing and improving society in various ways. In this workshop, we therefore want to revisit our feminist roots, where theory is a liberatory and creative practice, motivated by affect, curiosity, and wonder. From this standpoint, we consider which of our feminist tools can make a significant difference today, in a highly datafied world. The goal of this workshop is to;1) create an inventory of feminist theories and concepts that have had an impact on our work as designers, educators, researchers, and activists;2) develop a feminist toolbox for the CSCW community to strengthen our feminist literacy. © 2023 Owner/Author.

TAPEMAN: Towards an Optimal Data Gathering Mechanism in Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we study the lifetime optimization problem using a mobile sink node in a storage-constrained wireless sensor network, and propose an optimal data gathering mechanism named (TAPEMAN) which runs in three steps: first a tight upper bound of the network lifetime is derived through analysis of energy consumption, then we generate a Traveling salesman problem (TSP) solution based on a 2-approximation $O(n^{2})$ algorithm. A judgment will be made about whether this solution is optimal. If the answer is yes, TAPEMAN terminates. If not, a novel data diffusion scheme is used to distribute data to neighboring nodes, in order to avoid data leaking. We prove that under some reasonable assumptions, our algorithm can achieve this upperbound. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed solution and substantiate the importance of using sink mobility for energy-constrained sensor networks.
