Stratospheric balloons have emerged as an affordable and flexible alternative to traditional spacecrafts as they are implemented using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment without following strict methodologies. HERCCULES is a stratospheric balloon mission that aims to characterize the convective heat and radiative environment in the stratosphere. The purpose of this article is to present the HERCCULES onboard software (OBSW) whose design and complexity is comparable to that of satellite systems, since it must control about sixty COTS equipment using a single Raspberry Pi 4B as onboard computer and ensure the real-time requirements. Compared to similar systems, novel contributions are presented as the OBSW is developed following model-based and component-based approaches using the TASTE toolchain from the European Space. © 2024, CC BY.

This tutorial aims to introduce Event Graphs (EGs), invented 40 years ago by Lee Schruben to allow eventbased modeling of discrete dynamic systems. Their simplicity and naturalness in causality modelling and simulation modelling made EGs popular in research and practice. In a simulation, an event causes state changes in a system as well as other events to happen in the future. EGs provide a parsimonious diagram representation for the Event Scheduling paradigm of Discrete Event Simulation. We first introduce their visual syntax and informal semantics, and then present a recent extension by adding objects to EGs. Our tutorial also includes an introduction to the formal semantics of EGs and a Python implementation for executing EGs.

Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) safety has always been a critical reason for hindering the development of magneticenabled wireless power transfer technology. People focus on the actual received energy at charging devices while paying attention to their health. Thus, we study this significant problem in this paper, and propose a universal safety guaranteed power-delivered-to-load (PDL) maximization scheme (called SafeGuard). Technically, we first utilize the off-the-shelf electromagnetic simulator to perform the EMR distribution analysis to ensure the universality of the method. Then, we innovatively introduce the concept of multiple importance sampling for achieving efficient EMR safety constraint extraction. Finally, we treat the proposed optimization problem as an optimal boundary point search problem from the perspective of space geometry, and devise a brand-new grid-based multi-constraint parallel processing algorithm to efficiently solve it. We implement a system prototype for SafeGuard, and conduct extensive experiments to evaluate it. The results indicate that our SafeGuard can obviously improve the achieved PDL by up to 1.75× compared with the state-of-the-art baseline while guaranteeing EMR safety. Furthermore, SafeGuard can accelerate the solution process by 29.12× compared with the traditional numerical method to satisfy the fast optimization requirement of wireless charging systems.

Facing the current sustainability challenges requires reduction of the building stock energy consumption towards the European Green Deal targets by 2050. This can be accomplished by adopting techniques such as fault detection and diagnosis, and efficiency optimization. An occupancy-based algorithm for scheduling ventilation operations in buildings is here developed, aimed at optimizing the system’s operation according to occupancy profiles while maintaining a comfortable indoor climate. By relying only on electricity meters without using carbon dioxide or occupancy sensors, we use historical data of an Estonian school to develop a DBSCAN-based clustering algorithm that generates consumption profiles. A novel occupancy estimation algorithm, based on threshold and time series methods, then creates 12 occupancy schedules that are either based on classical detection with on-off method or on occupancy estimation for demand-controlled ventilation (DCV). We find that, compared to standard on-off scheduling, DCV-based occupancy estimation induces systematic savings in terms of both energy and costs from 18.1% up to 62.6%, still complying with current national regulations of indoor air quality. Remarkably, as our method relies only on occupancy schedules, thus eliminating reliance on weather and other external factors, it can immediately be extended to other countries. © 2023, The Authors. The adoption of Battery Electric Buses (BEBs) in electric public transit systems presents a significant opportunity for advancing sustainable transportation. However, it also poses challenges to the coupled electric transport and energy systems, particularly concerning the safety and efficiency of Power Distribution Networks (PDN). This study introduces a comprehensive BEB-PDN framework designed for the joint optimization of charging infrastructure, charging scheduling, and integration of renewable energy resources, with a specific focus on their impacts on PDN. The complexity of the proposed model is primarily due to its extensive decision variables and nonlinear constraints. To address this, a decomposition approach is employed, linearizing the problem and dividing it into master and subproblems for efficient resolution. A case study in Skövde, Sweden demonstrates that without renewable energy integration, high charging demands from BEBs can lead to PDN safety violations, such as significant voltage drops at certain nodes. The incorporation of renewable energy sources with battery energy storage in the BEB transit system is shown to enhance the PDN's stability and safety while catering to the system's spatiotemporal charging demands. This study offers an optimization framework for the integrated planning of charging infrastructure, BEB systems, and renewable energy, providing empirical insights into their potential benefits. © 2024, The Authors. This paper presents an innovative approach to identifying defects in alloy wheel production by integrating image processing techniques with a mobile application platform. The system receives X-ray alloy images from the factory via mobile phone, processes them using image processing techniques to enhance clarity and readiness for defect detection, and then transmits the processed images to a Django framework via a uniform resource locator (URL). Subsequently, the system detects defects in the images, encodes them in Base64 format, and sends them to the mobile application through an API (Application Program Interface) for display on the user interface. This well-designed system architecture offers manufacturers a comprehensive solution to ensure product quality, reduce costs, and enhance customer satisfaction.

We use fixed relays deployed by network operators to reduce re-transmission (thereby reducing network power requirements) in addition to providing excellent end-to-end error performance in a revisit to automatic repeat request-based cooperative relaying. The new relaying scheme facilitates the creation of a connectivity suitable for delay tolerant internet-of-things (IoT)-type services. For IoT devices, link reliability and power efficiency are a major system design consideration. The proposed scheme operates in the following fashion. The source (e.g., a sensor) transmits for a certain time window. During this period, the source and the relays do not require per transmission acknowledgment (ACK) from the destination. At the end of a transmission window, the destination sends a 'group' ACK. If negative, relays are invited to help. Depending on the cooperation strategy, each relay transmits in either one transmission time slot or a few time slots, using a suitably chosen higher-order modulation constellation. If no error occurs, the source continues its transmission. Furthermore, we devise a novel strategy for selecting the best relay for this new way of exploiting the benefits of multiple relays in a network. In the process, we reclaim the bandwidth expansion that comes with multi-relay system but still maintaining E2E bit error rate that is superior to that of a single relay cooperation. Numerical results that reveal the benefits of the new and modified ARQ cooperative relaying scheme are presented. © 2021 IEEE.

RISC-V-based fault-tolerant system-on-chip (SoC) designs are critical for the new generation of automotive and space SoC architectures. However, reliability assessment requires characterization under controlled radiation doses to accurately quantify the fault tolerance of the fabricated designs. This work analyzes the Trikarenos design, a SoC implemented in TSMC 28nm, for single event upset (SEU) vulnerability under atmospheric neutron and 200MeV proton radiation, comparing these results to simulation-based fault injection. All faults in error correction codes (ECC) protected memory are corrected by a scrubber, showing an estimated cross-section per bit of up to 1.09 × 10−14 cm2 bit−1. Furthermore, the triple-core lockstep (TCLS) mechanism implemented in Trikarenos is validated and is shown to correct errors affecting a cross-section up to 3.23 × 10−11 cm2, with the remaining uncorrectable vulnerability below 5.36 × 10−12 cm2. When augmenting the experimental analysis of fabricated chips with gate-level fault injection in simulation, 99.10% of injections into the SoC produced correct results, while 100% of injections in the TCLS-protected cores were handled *** 12.28%of all injected faults leading to a TCLS recovery, this indicates an approximate effective flip-flop cross-section of up to 1.28 × 10−14 cm2/FF. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Relip: Reliable in-Band Parallel Communication for Magnetic MIMO Wireless Power Transfer System

In magnetic resonant coupling (MRC) based wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, receiver (RX) feedback communication is promising to enhance the capability and efficiency of the system. Although some studies have explored in-band implementations with low overhead costs, it has not been comprehensively investigated. In this paper, we propose Relip, a Reliable layer-level in-band parallel feedback communication mechanism for MIMO MRC-WPT systems, which addresses the impact of RX-RX couplings (i.e., non-negligible interference from strong couplings and positive effects of relay phenomenon), and provides a theoretical analysis of communication reliability. Technically, we first devise an On-Off based two-phase modulation mechanism to achieve RX identification and dependency detection under relay phenomenon. Then, we utilize observed channel decomposability to collect group-level power transfer channel conditions for eliminating the interference caused by strong RX-RX couplings. Furthermore, we perform RX selection to optimize the trade-off between communication reliability and time overhead. We design and implement the Relip prototype and conduct extensive experiments. The results validate the effectiveness of our mechanism, i.e., Relip can provide ≥99% average decoding accuracy for concurrent feedback communication of 14 devices, achieving an 18.31% improvement compared to the state-of-the-art solution. © 2002-2012 IEEE.
