The inclusion of edge diffraction has long been recognized as an improvement to geometrical-acoustics (GA)modeling techniques, particularly for acoustic simulations of complex environments that are represented as collections of finite-sized planar surfaces. One particular benefit of combining edge diffraction with GA components is that the resulting total sound field is continuous when an acoustic source or receiver crosses a specular-zone or shadow-zone boundary, despite the discontinuity experienced by the associated GA *** interactive acoustic simulations which include only GA components, such discontinuities may be heard as clicks or other undesirable audible artifacts, and thus diffraction calculations are important for high perceptual quality as well as physical realism. While exact diffraction calculations are difficult to compute at interactive rates, approximate calculations are possible and sufficient for situations in which the ultimate goal is a perceptually plausible simulation rather than a numerically exact one. In this paper, we describe an edge-subdivision strategy that allows for fast time-domain edge-diffraction calculations with relatively low error when compared with results from a more numerically accurate solution. The tradeoff between computation time and accuracy can be controlled with a number of parameters, allowing the user to choose the speed that is necessary and the error that is tolerable for a specific modeling scenario.

Nature has optimized the processing of visual information, especially in primates. The estimation of optical flow is a complex task that gives information about ego-motion, and permits tracking objects from a given scene. Critical embedded systems need a dependable operating system and application. Despite all efforts to prevent and remove faults in system development, residual software faults usually persist. Therefore, critical systems need some sort of fault tolerance to deal with these faults and also with hardware faults at operation time. This work proposes fault-tolerant support mechanisms for the BOSS embedded operating system, based on the application of proven fault tolerance strategies by middleware control software which transparently delivers the added functionality to the application software. Special attention is taken to complexity control and resource constraints, targeting the needs of the embedded market

In this paper, we present a tool devised for the automatic design and optimization of bioinspired visual processing models using reconfigurable hardware. We have focused on the simulation and optimization characteristics of our system. We also present a retina-like processing system based on a PCI-based FPGA board as an example. The whole system is intended for the design and analysis of real-time vision processing schemes. The top-down design path of our system involves a high level synthesis scheme while allowing different strategies for optimizing the system via the CodeSimulink codesign tool

While there exist many kernel and user level libraries/systems which support checkpointing working processes and resuming their operations, it is still very difficult to provide an easy-to-use tool to assist checkpointing parallel applications. In this work, we aim at the development of an easy-to-use user-guided library to support checkpointing parallel MPI applications to be executed within the CLUSTERIX environment i.e. a collection of distributed HPC clusters. We propose a programmer-assisted approach with process state packing and unpacking at the code level for SPMD HPC applications. Although the library is in its early stage of development we present checkpoint/restart times and application execution (interrupted by checkpointing) times for the proposed approach compared to the same application linked with the ckpt user level library.

Future network should be able to efficiently serve packet-based networks, such as the Internet. In this paper, based on results from COST 266, we explore characteristics of Optical Burst switching (OBS) and Optical Packet Switching (OPS). Both node design and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) are discussed. A unique joint comparative performance evaluation of contention resolution in OBS and OPS are presented, as well as methods of Quality of Service (QoS) differentiation in OBS/OPS networks, and their performance. © 2003, Institute of Electrical and electronics Engineers Inc. LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Prior to joining Carlow in 1982 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as a member of the technical staff at North American Rockwell's Missiles Division and as a project director and vice president for Essex Corporation. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

Monitoring edge-to-edge traffic aggregates in differentiated services networks

Differentiated Services (DiffServ), which are currently being standardized in the IETF DiffServ working group, is a solution that can provide different qualities of service to different network users. DiffServ aggregates network packets at edge routers and forwards the aggregated packets to core routers with different priorities. In this paper, we propose methods using the SNMP framework for monitoring edge-to-edge traffic aggregates in a DiffServ domain, which consists of a set of DiffServ-enabled routers. In order to manage each DiffServ router, we have analyzed the DiffServ MIB and instrumented it in the router. Further, we propose monitoring behaviors of edge-to-edge traffic aggregates by combining topology and performance information from MIB II and DiffServ MIB. Construction procedures and graphical representation of the edge-to-edge traffic aggregates are explained in detail. We also extend our efforts to implement a DiffServ domain monitoring system that monitors a set of DiffServ-enabled routers and traffic aggregates between every edge router pair. We believe that the proposed monitoring methods can serve as useful building blocks for managing DiffServ networks. © 2001 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

In this paper we consider the successful hybridation of a two modern computational schemes, Clustering and Neural Networks, for the Predictive Classification of the future value of insect infestation levels for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of olive groves. The predictive classification techniques employed allow managers to improve their work in two ways: first, by reducing sampling demands of the variables involved, which is a costly process;and second, by recognizing potential infestation problems a up to two weeks beforehand, in order to optimize the use of pesticide chemical products and this reduce financial costs. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
