Machine learning-driven sustainable urban design: transforming Singapore's landscape with vertical greenery

Integrating state-of-the-art technology is now essential in pursuing environmentally sustainable urban development. This research focuses on Singapore's lush vertical landscape and explores the potential of machine learning. Specifically, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to enhance sustainable urban design. The CNN-MOA model was created by incorporating the Mayfly Optimization Algorithm (MOA) to improve the performance of the CNN-based model further. Without the Mayfly Optimization Algorithm, the convolutional neural network (CNN) achieved impressive results. It had a total accuracy of 0.977725, a weighted average precision of 0.977679, a weighted average recall of 0.977725, a weighted average F1-Score of 0.977621, and a macro average precision of 0.953458. These measures unequivocally demonstrated CNN's ability to process and analyze data about urban design effectively. A significant advancement occurred when the fusion of the CNN model with the Mayfly Optimization Algorithm resulted in the creation of the CNN-MOA hybrid. The installation led to a substantial enhancement in the model's performance. The results revealed a weighted average accuracy of 99.98%, recall of 99.92%, macro average F1-Score of 99.95%, weighted average precision of 99.98%, weighted average recall of 99.98%, and weighted average F1-Score of 99.98%. Each of these indicators exhibited exceptional performance. The model's ability to comprehend and evaluate intricate urban design features has been significantly enhanced. These findings demonstrate significant prospects for the sustainable development of metropolitan areas, particularly in Singapore, as observed by urban planners. Integrating machine learning in digital architecture: enhancing sustainable design and energy efficiency in urban environments

The following work applies metaheuristic optimization algorithms—PSO, ACO, Genetic Algorithm, and Enhanced Colliding Bodies Optimization (ECBO)—to the optimum design of a sustainable building with respect to prominent metrics such as energy savings, improvement in indoor comfort, and reduction in carbon footprint. These algorithms are applied to a wide dataset that includes variable intensity factors such as window-to-wall variation ratio, HVAC efficiency, and integration of renewable energy. Results also proved that PSO is the fittest strategy to balance energy efficiency and sustainability, with the highest energy savings of 24.1%. Besides, PSO wasn’t just the fastest convergence rate;it also obtained a Platinum LEED certification. ACO was second in order of magnitude, with high energy savings and carbon footprint reduction values, and also obtained the Platinum LEED certificate. The results obtained for GA were positive from the occupant comfort point of view but were slower in terms of energy savings and convergence speed. In contrast, ECBO had the slowest convergence and lowest energy savings, demonstrating the limitation of the application of ECBO for large-scale multi-objective optimization. These results imply that PSO and ACO would be suitable for practical applications linked to urban sustainable design, while GA and ECBO are more suited for niche applications. The obtained results can provide useful guidelines in developing more energy-efficient and sustainable designs for architects, urban planners, and policymakers. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This workshop explores learning in Participatory Design (PD). We invite the PD community to reflect on the multiple ways learning can strengthen and expand how we frame and drive participatory design to reflect on how we can expand learning in PD to gain an understanding for the complex system we are all part of, for the interdependence of social, ecological and economic systems. Through this workshop, we will invite participants to address questions such as: What theories and concepts can be used to understand learning in PD? What kind of approaches are used to foster learning in PD? How is learning evaluated in PD? It is acknowledged that people spend almost 90 percent of their time in indoor spaces. Therefore, achieving a comfortable indoor environment that encourages productivity is crucial, particularly in office buildings. This paper investigates the design and performance of a modern office building in London characterized by fully glazed facades of open plan office spaces with no natural ventilation. The purpose of the research is to investigate the correlations between the control of direct solar radiation access and the effect on occupants' thermal comfort in the summer followed by assessing the potential effect of the application of passive solar shading on thermal comfort levels in the office spaces. The research methodology involves a survey questionnaire undertaken with employees of the office building, followed by dynamic thermal modelling of the building using Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) software. The questionnaire has been designed to understand occupants' experiences within their office spaces and their strategies to improve the indoor environment. Furthermore, IES modelling and simulation provide in depth understanding of the building thermal performance and investigating the solar shading strategies. Overall, 66 questionnaire forms were completed where preliminary results demonstrated that most employees relied heavily on secondary cooling and heating systems to adjust the indoor air temperature for more satisfactory thermal comfort levels in their office spaces. The building modelling and simulation is used to quantify the direct solar radiation accessing the office space, the risks of overheating and the potential impact of solar control on occupants' indoor comfort. The findings from this study demonstrate the potentially high hours of discomfort in the summer within the office spaces mainly due to the lack of control of direct solar access through the extensive area of glazed facades. This paper explores the evolution of Geodesign in addressing spatial and environmental challenges from its early foundations to the recent integration of artificial intelligence (AI). AI enhances existing Geodesign methods by automating spatial data analysis, improving land use classification, refining heat island effect assessment, optimizing energy use, facilitating green infrastructure planning, and generating design scenarios. Despite the transformative potential of AI in Geodesign, challenges related to data quality, model interpretability, and ethical concerns such as privacy and bias persist. This paper highlights case studies that demonstrate the application of AI in Geodesign, offering insights into its role in understanding existing systems and designing future changes. The paper concludes by advocating for the responsible and transparent integration of AI to ensure equitable and effective Geodesign outcomes.

This paper discusses the results of the monitoring and comfort surveys conducted at different locations in Abuja, Nigeria. The study aims to evaluate the performance of residential houses in the city, during the dry season and interventions to improve occupants' comfort. The results revealed overheating occurred in all the living rooms. In the bedrooms, 100% and 80% exceeded the Cat. II and III thresholds respectively. The study also explored passive cooling interventions to improve indoor environmental conditions by modifying the roof and shading device. At each location, two buildings were simulated as naturally ventilated and air-conditioned for one-week (30/April-06/May), and the entire warm/dry season (01/February-06/May). The interventions (75mm roof and 450mm shading device) have a significant effect in reducing the maximum living room temperatures by 5°C in the naturally ventilated building. The night-time bedroom temperatures were reduced by 3.8°C. The study showed the interventions would improve occupants' comfort during night-time. In the living rooms, the air-conditioned model revealed a 100% reduction (25kWh-0kWh) in the cooling load when the passive interventions were applied. The cooling load in the bedrooms was also reduced by 100% (7kWh-0kWh) when the interventions were introduced. The interventions contributed to the cooling load reduction as the maximum temperatures remain at 28°C for most of the time. For the entire dry season, the percentage of temperatures >28°C for the naturally ventilated living rooms was reduced by 23% and 43% during the daytime and evening period respectively. The percentage of temperatures >28°C dropped by 17% in the bedrooms during the night-time. The study showed that the most effective passive cooling interventions for the naturally ventilated model include the application of roof insulation and shading device. Weathering with You: Mythical Time and the Paradox of the Anthropocene

She works in the areas of film and media studies architecture visual arts and critical theory. Her first book Cinema of Actuality: Japanese Avant-Garde Filmmaking in the Season of Image Politics (Duke University Press 2013) won the Best First Book Award from the Society of Cinema and Media Studies. Her second book Climatic Media: Transpacific Experiments in Atmospheric Control (Duke University Press 2022) explores geopolitical connections across environmental art weather control digital computing and cybernetic architecture in Japan and the United States. She is currently working on two new projects: the first titled Into Frozen Archives explores snow and ice as storage media in relation to the legacies of Japanese and American imperialisms the second titled Enchanted Consultation examines the cultural techniques of divination and prediction in relation to histories of pseudoscience including astrology geomancy and parapsychology.

This article focuses on the animated Japanese film Weathering with You (2019) in order to think critically about the limits and merits of site-specific, local approaches to the anthropogenic climate crisis, and to the Anthropocene and its mythopoetic tendency. While the geological period of the Anthropocene is thoroughly historical and rooted in the modern scientific paradigm of Earth history, the mythologizing tendency in search of new cosmologies within the discourse of the Anthropocene complicates this linear trajectory of time. Anthropocene discourse invites its critics to revive and reinvent local myths. When these myths appear within the planetary scale of Anthropocene discourse, they take on a cosmological, if not universal, outlook. It is this spatial and temporal paradox of myths within the geological framework of the Anthropocene that this article investigates through the mediation of Weathering with You. Representations 157. Among many global challenges, climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our times. While it is one of the most devastating problems humanity has ever faced, one question naturally arises: can individuals make a difference? We believe that everyone can contribute and make a difference to the community and lives of others. However, there is still a lack of effective strategies to promote and facilitate pro-environmental behavior of individuals. To fill this gap, in this paper, we introduce and discuss the Greencoin mobile application prototype. The app is built on existing intelligent data-driven technologies, including supervised and unsupervised learning techniques. Since its end-users will mostly concern the city dwellers, the project falls into the scope of the ongoing research in the area of smart city applications. Nevertheless, the application is still in the design phase, we believe it is a good starting point to spark discussion on its further directions of development, as well as to draw the attention of both national and international audiences to the issues raised.

This panel brings together academics and practitioners to discuss the structural problems facing visual effects within the film and television industry today. This discussion is organized around four sub-Topics: 1) labor solutions and what unionization would mean, 2) perceptions of VFX artists and their contributions within the industry by filmmakers and artists themselves, as well as the audience, 3) issues of inclusivity along gender and racial lines, and their effects on work/life balances, and 4) VFX as equal creative partners rather than isolated, temporary, highly-skilled specialists. This panel is a continuation of work begun by the faculty and practitioner organizers, Heath Hanlin (Syracuse University, VPA) and Shaina Holmes (Syracuse University, Newhouse) on studying structural challenges and obstacles to entry for students hoping to enter the VFX industry, in particular women, and artists of color. An earlier iteration of this discussion was held at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The hope is that the technical focus and high attendance by industry practitioners at Siggraph, adds practitioner perspectives and educator feedback to the sub-Topics listed above. Simply put, today's film and television industry rely heavily on visual effects, both to advance the story or as a means to hide imperfections to keep the audience engaged without technical distractions. Traditional conceptions of VFX artistry as a production step that comes after primary cinematography is simply outdated. Unfortunately, the economic and work-flow structure of the industry accepts this new reality while at the same time attempting to compensate, credit, and organize VFX artists within the outdated framework. Often this aspect of the conversation is moored in debates surrounding the potentiality of AI to either positively impact the industry (no more underpaid routinized tasks for artists) or negatively (crafts persons and artists can be replaced by algorithms). Buildings consume over 40 % [1] of the yearly demand for energy (in IEA member countries). Therefore, it is important to take this fact into account in the designing process - not only in terms of potential savings but also from the point of view of energy acquisition. That is why the external building finishing has an important influence on the energy balance as it may save thermal energy and convert sunlight directly into electricity. It is generally believed that the façade is the showcase of the building. An increasingly common concept for effective building facades, not only those newly-created but also after refurbishment, is photovoltaic panels. Regenerative energy production and architectural designing possibilities are no longer an obstacle. Due to a growing range of available cell technologies (polycrystalline, monocrystalline, high-efficiency and semitransparent), as well as designs (colors, overprints) and parameters (weight, power), their integration with building envelope is not longer an issue. Contemporary Photovoltiaics are designed and manufactured to meet the requirements of designers, builders, investors and the owners. The multifunctionality allows for energy production, as well as for shading, lighting contron and thermal insulation.
