DeepLeaf: an optimized deep learning approach for automated recognition of grapevine leaf diseases

Plant diseases can cause severe losses in agricultural production, impacting food security and safety. Early detection of plant diseases is crucial to minimize crop damage and ensure agricultural sustainability. Manual monitoring is often impractical due to the complexity and time involved, making automated disease recognition essential. This study presents a new Plant Disease Detection Algorithm (PDDA) called DeepLeaf focused on identifying four common grapevine diseases: leaf blight, black rot, stable, and black measles. The PDDA integrates three key modules: an Image Preprocessing Module, a Feature Extraction Module, and an Optimized Convolutional Neural Network (OCNN)-based Classification Module. The OCNN forms the core of the classification system, with its hyperparameters fine-tuned using fuzzy optimization to enhance performance. Preprocessing techniques are applied to analyze diseased leaves, and a logistic regression algorithm is used to downsample the features for better analysis. The CNN is trained on images from the Plant Village dataset, allowing it to detect and classify grapevine leaf diseases accurately. The proposed model's efficiency in the automated diagnosis of grapevine diseases is demonstrated by its remarkable 99.7% accuracy rate. This high accuracy indicates that the PDDA may help with more effective and scalable plant disease monitoring, which will ultimately allow better agricultural practices. © The Author(s) 2025.

Modern normative technical documentation in the field of design and operation of power facilities [1] imposes new requirements on current transformers (CTs) operation. The technical characteristics of CTs and the connected relay protection devices as a whole must ensure the correct operation of the devices during short-circuits (SCs), including when an aperiodic current component occurs. This circumstance primarily applies to newly constructed and reconstructed power facilities. The process of creating design documentation for them must be carried out taking into account the new requirements, for which GOST R 58669-2019 [2] was developed and approved. According to it, in addition to the existing tests of selected CTs, it is necessary to perform calculations of the time to saturation of the magnetic core of each CT winding, high-speed relay protection devices are connected to which. The obtained time is compared with the minimum time required for the correct operation of the connected relay protection devices. Difficulties often occur in coordinating the characteristics of CTs selected at the design stage and the results of calculating the time to saturation of CT magnetic cores at the detailed design stage. Negative test results lead to the need to adjust the design characteristics of CTs and to additional labor costs for their approval. One of the solutions to the problem encountered in design practice is intentionally inflating the characteristics of CTs at the design stage in order to successfully pass the time to saturation test at the detailed design stage. It leads to unjustified financial costs and non-optimal selection of CTs. Therefore, it is relevant to develop methods for calculating CT characteristics taking into account the new requirements. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we address the safety verification problem of switched linear dynamical systems under arbitrary switching via barrier functions. Our approach is based on a notion of path-complete barrier functions, which utilizes a collection of barrier functions associated with a directed labeled graph that can encode all the possible switching sequences. We show that path-complete barrier functions effectively generalize notions of common and multiple barrier functions studied in existing literature, and can potentially provide less conservative conditions for safety verification. We demonstrate that, for switched linear systems, the inequalities imposed via path-complete barrier functions can be easily encoded into simple linear matrix inequalities under some assumptions on the regions of interest and appropriately chosen templates for the barrier functions. We also study the relationship between path-complete barrier functions and common barrier functions, and show that for any path-complete graph with an admissible path-complete barrier function, one can derive a suitable (possibly non-smooth) common barrier function by utilizing the path-complete barrier function. Finally, we utilize several examples to illustrate the effectiveness of our approach, and briefly discuss the challenges that lay foundations for future research. © 2024 IEEE.

Cybersecurity has in recent years emerged as a paramount concern in the design and operation of industrial systems and civil infrastructures, due mainly to their susceptibility to malicious cyber attacks which take advantage of the vulnerability of communication networks and IT devices. In this paper, we investigate such an attack and counter attack scenario by considering multiagent systems, a somewhat basic prototype of cyberphysical systems. We study false data injection attacks launched on the agent sensors, and possible defense of such attacks at the agent actuators. The primary issue under consideration is the stealthiness of the attacks, while steering a multiagent system away from its consensual state. We propose a metric to quantify the stealthiness, and formulate the stealthiness problem as one of zero-sum games. We solve the problem explicitly, which gives rise to a fundamental bound on the stealthiness achievable, and as well optimal attack and defense strategies that achieve the optimal stealthiness, both of which can be obtained in terms of certain augmented controllability Gramians associated with the agents. The stealthiness bound is seen to depend on agent dynamics and network characteristics including a measure of connectivity. © 2024 IEEE.

The paper presents a description of the research methodology dedicated to a two-step discretisation process applied to the input numeric data, with combining the characteristics of selected supervised and unsupervised algorithms, which leads to extended processing of some attributes in train and test sets. The methodology was illustrated with the investigations carried out in the domain of stylometric analysis of texts, for two datasets prepared for the task of binary authorship attribution. The several variants of transformed input data obtained were subjected to exploration using two selected machine learning methods capable of inducing knowledge from both continuous and categorical forms, namely the PART and J48 classifiers. The results from the experiments indicate that, as can be expected, supervised transformations of data work well enough, however, they do not always return the best outcome. The two-step processing of some attributes shows sufficient promise to warrant a closer study, as opposed to always unconditionally relying only on supervised algorithms as outperforming all other approaches. © 2023 The Authors. "Artificial lung" is a device that simulates breathing process of occupants in a room. This allows you to safely test, e.g., the impact of HVAC systems on the spread of pathogens. The paper describes the concept of the device, its construction and performed tests. The project was implemented by students of two faculties: automatic control, Electronics and computer Science, and Energy and Environmental engineering. Motion systems are a vital part of many industrial processes. However, meeting the increasingly stringent demands of these systems, especially concerning precision and throughput, requires novel control design methods that can go beyond the capabilities of traditional solutions. Traditional control methods often struggle with the complexity and position-dependent effects inherent in modern motion systems, leading to compromises in performance and a laborious task of controller design. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing a novel structured feedback control auto-tuning approach for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) motion systems. By leveraging frequency response function (FRF) estimates and the linear-parameter-varying (LPV) control framework, the proposed approach automates the controller design, while providing local stability and performance guarantees. Key innovations include norm-based magnitude optimization of the sensitivity functions, an automated stability check through a novel extended factorized Nyquist criterion, a modular structured MIMO LPV controller parameterization, and a controller discretization approach which preserves the continuous-time (CT) controller parameterization. The proposed approach is validated through experiments using a state-of-the-art moving-magnet planar actuator prototype. © 2024 IEEE.

Decision reducts and rules belong to forms used for the representation of knowledge learnt from input data while using a rough set approach in the exploration stage. As with any patterns that capture properties of data, the size is considered as the most important indicator of their quality, as a more general and concise description allows for improved understanding and simplified interpretation. The size of a reduct is given by its cardinality, and for a rule it is a number of included conditions, both referred to as lengths. These lengths undergo transformations along with data transformations, so such processing as discretisation leads to changed characteristics of existing patterns and through them also reducts and rules. The paper presents research with contributions in the observations focused on the influence of supervised and unsupervised discretisation on properties of attributes, induced decision reducts, and rules, offering a deeper insight into relations among them. © 2023 The Authors.
