The management of wastewater is a significant global concern that calls for innovative solutions to lessen its negative effects on the environment. Conventional techniques of treating wastewater need improvement in order to deal with newly discovered contaminants, which highlights the importance of providing precise estimates of process performance and resource requirements. The worsening water shortage situation requires a paradigm shift in which wastewater is viewed as a useful resource. It is possible to create an economy that is both sustainable and circular by treating and recycling wastewater, putting less pressure on freshwater supplies, and leaving as little of an environmental footprint as possible. This study investigates the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as software estimators in the treatment of wastewater, with a particular emphasis on predicting ammonium concentrations in effluent. In order to deal with imbalanced time-series data, the research introduces innovative data pretreatment strategies. These techniques include a Sliding Window protocol, Data Normalization, and a K-Fold training scheme. This illustrates the potential of ANNs to revolutionize wastewater treatment procedures and drive developments in this field. The suggested method demonstrates higher performance when estimating pollutant concentrations, showing the ability of ANNs to do so. © 2023 IEEE.

STGNN: a new self-trained generalized neural networks task space control for robot manipulators

The inherent uncertainties in the dynamic and kinematic parameters of robot manipulators pose significant challenges for their control in task space. This paper introduces an innovative adaptive sliding mode control strategy, leveraging self-trained generalized neural networks to enhance the precision and robustness of robot manipulator control. The proposed framework called STGNN integrates deep neural networks for the real-time estimation and adjustment of dynamics’ and kinematics’ parameters. Key contributions of this work include the development of semi-supervised learning models for adaptive dynamics and kinematics estimation. By training the generalized neural network on different trajectories, the same models can be utilized to operate on a variety of tasks, significantly improving the robustness, scalability, and adaptability of the control system. The STGNN approach allows the models to leverage both labeled and unlabeled data, incorporating a self-training mechanism that enhances their ability to generalize and adapt to diverse operational scenarios. This capability is particularly beneficial for real-time applications, where the ability to learn and adapt on the fly is crucial. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the STGNN framework in controlling robot manipulators in operational space, showcasing its potential for real-world applications. In recent years, the hyperspectral image (HSI) classification has attracted great attention in the field of earth observation. With the expansion of application scenarios and the continuous improvement of application requirements, new classes of HSI continue to emerge. In the face of open and dynamic application scenarios, the model is required to be able to continuously learn new categories based on maintaining existing category knowledge. Class incremental learning algorithms have received extensive attention as key solutions to the problem above. In this paper, we use a regularization-based incremental learning algorithm, elastic weight consolidation (EWC) for class incremental learning for HSI classification. After data preprocessing to reduce data dimensions, we select new classes for research on class incremental learning. We combine 3D-2D convolutional structures and residual blocks as the classification network and use real data playback mechanism to improve class recognition accuracy and realize class incremental recognition of HSI data. We demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm with extensive experiments based on three widely used hyperspectral datasets. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease causing hundred thousand of death each year worldwide and defined as a respiratory and airflow impairment majorly due to large and small airways dysfunctions. COPD could be considered as a syndrome that includes disease axes of variable pathological and clinical conditions. Despite recent advances, the comprehension of the molecular mechanisms responsible for COPD disease spectrum is far to be reached. Moreover, we should also consider continuous smoking exposure, which could lead to variability in the disease mechanisms and progression. Network-based multi-omics data integration can help to study the association between molecular determinants on diverse biomolecular layers in a disease context. In a previous study, we leveraged lung RNA-seq and DNA-methylation data of a COPD-control cohort to build a correlation-based integrated network (called coupled network), that helped to unveil genes involved in immune and inflammatory modulation of COPD. Therefore, in our previous study we highlighted the most important genes of the coupled network and inspected their single contribution to disease-related pathways. In this study we aim to overcome this limitation by performing a pathway activity analysis by considering the expression and DNA methylation profiles of coupled network genes. Moreover, we exploit this analysis to study the possible contribution of coupled network genes to the differential disease progression between current and former smokers patients. © 2024 IEEE.

The article is devoted to the development of new fault location algorithms based on emergency mode parameters at instantaneous values on overhead power transmission lines of 110 kV and above. Increasing the accuracy of fault location algorithms is an important and urgent task. The methodological and simulation errors of fault location are directly related to the configuration of the power transmission line. The presence of parallel power transmission lines, mutual induction or branch substations affects the accuracy of fault location. In this work, the authors modernize their own previously developed fault location algorithms based on instantaneous values for complex power transmission line configurations. The developed fault location algorithms do not require additional corrections or means for processing primary signals and can be successfully applied when using data from digital in-strumental transformers. The studies of the algorithms were carried out on the simulation models of the overhead power lines in the Simulink/MATLAB software package. The remote fault location of the damage was carried out according to the parameters of the emergency mode. The assignment of parameters for the simulation modeling is carried out using the Monte Carlo method with subsequent statistical processing of the results and the construction of a justified inspection zone.

In $6-10 \text{kV}$ distribution networks the operation of voltage transformers can be affected by many dangerous phenomena, among which ferroresonances are particularly notable. In order to prevent such processes, many manufacturers have developed various versions of anti-resonance voltage transformers. Nevertheless, there is a problem of experimental confirmation of the anti-resonance properties claimed by the manufacturers. This paper presents an in-situ test rig to test 6-10 kV voltage transformers for ferroresonance resistance. Experiments were conducted to detect subharmonic ferroresonance on the physical test bed and the corresponding oscillograms were obtained. The presented experimental set-up allows testing voltage transformers to prevent ferroresonance phenomena in networks with isolated neutral in the most effective way.

Chimera states are dynamical states where regions of synchronous trajectories coexist with incoherent ones. A significant amount of research has been devoted to studying chimera states in systems of identical oscillators, nonlocally coupled through pairwise interactions. Nevertheless, there is increasing evidence, also supported by available data, that complex systems are composed of multiple units experiencing many-body interactions that can be modeled by using higher-order structures beyond the paradigm of classic pairwise networks. In this work we investigate whether phase chimera states appear in this framework, by focusing on a topology solely involving many-body, nonlocal, and nonregular interactions, hereby named nonlocal d-hyperring, (d+1) being the order of the interactions. We present the theory by using the paradigmatic Stuart-Landau oscillators as node dynamics, and we show that phase chimera states emerge in a variety of structures and with different coupling functions. For comparison, we show that, when higher-order interactions are “flattened” to pairwise ones, the chimera behavior is weaker and more elusive.

Clustering algorithms are crucial in uncovering hidden patterns and structures within datasets. Among the density-based clustering algorithms, DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) has gained considerable attention for its effectiveness in various applications. However, determining appropriate parameter values for this algorithm remains a challenging task. This paper presents a novel methodology for eps parameter estimation for an improved DBSCAN, namely SS-DBSCAN. The experimental results across nine datasets demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed method in accurately determining clusters with eps value from SS-DBSCAN algorithm. The clusters identified using estimated eps values by SS-DBSCAN align well with the inherent structure of the datasets, yielding better cluster results than the manually set parameters and other methods used for automatic estimations of the eps for DBSCAN. Our approach adapted well to the peculiarities of each dataset, whether dealing with different scales, dimensions, or densities;it proved the versatility and robustness across various datasets, thereby emphasizing its generalizability and potential for broader applications. © 2023 IEEE.
