This paper describes the different communication patterns followed in industrial communications and maps them into DDS (Data Distribution Service) which is a recent middleware specification. This specification follows the publisher/subscriber paradigm and it is characterized by providing an API that allows tuning the QoS (Quality of Service) of the applications with a large set of parameters. This paper proposes using DDS as the backbone for industrial communications at the control level. In particular, we advocate its use to combine sending critical information such as alarms and real-time periodic information with less critical information related to configuration, diagnostic or maintenance operations.
Although a few industrial automation systems have also been implemented with DDS, this standard has not yet gained much significance in factory automation applications for several reasons. One of these reasons is that...

Although a few industrial automation systems have also been implemented with DDS, this standard has not yet gained much significance in factory automation applications for several reasons. One of these reasons is that since DDS is aimed at a broad range of application domains and it may be necessary to provide certain guidelines in order to use it efficiently in factory automation applications by automation engineers. This paper fills this gap by analyzing the types of traffic found in this kind of applications and describing how to configure the QoS parameters DDS provides. It also presents an ongoing case study that illustrates the application of DDS as communication backbone in factory automation applications.

This paper proposes a new fast 3D image reconstruction algorithm for Diffuse Optical Tomography using reduced order polynomial mappings from the space of optical tissue parameters into the space of flux measurements at the detector locations. The polynomial mappings are constructed through an iterative estimation process involving structure detection, parameter estimation and cross-validation using data generated by simulating a diffusion approximation of the radiative transfer equation incorporating a priori anatomical and functional information provided by MR scans and prior psychological evidence. Numerical simulation studies demonstrate that reconstructed images are remarkably similar in quality as those obtained using the standard approach, but obtained at a fraction of the time.
The paper considers design of Robustly Feasible Model Predictive controller which achieves recursive robust feasibility of the generated control actions when applied to nonlinear network systems with state constraint ...

A novel structure identification procedure for discrete event systems described by Petri nets are proposed in this paper for model-based diagnostic purposes that utilize the notions and tools of process mining. The identification of the structurally different discrete event system models describing a system in its normal and/or faulty modes was used for model-based isolation of the considered faulty modes. From the available process mining techniques that allow for the automatic construction of process models in Petri net form based on event logs, the genetic algorithm-based structure identification procedure has been found to be most capable of identifying the characteristic structural elements of the faulty models. The proposed procedures are illustrated on a simple example of an operated parking gate automaton with two faulty modes.

The majority of active control methods for tackling vibration problems that have been proposed in the literature implicitly make the assumption that sensors or actuators can be located in the region where vibration attenuation is desired. However, in many large structures the performance variable is not accessible for measurement or control due to limitations on sensor and actuator placement. A geometric methodology that was recently proposed provides a systematic controller design approach for controlling remote vibration using only local sensing and actuation. The controller implementation for the broad band control of vibration entails inversion of the local control path transfer function. When the sensor and actuator are not collocated or when there is phase delay in the system due to sensor or actuator dynamics, A/D converter, or amplifier;the local control path has non-minimum phase characteristics. The controller thus implemented, incorporating an inverted non-minimum phase transfer function, would itself be unstable. In this paper, a procedure is illustrated that modifies the design freedom defined in the original work to ensure a stable and stabilizing controller implementation for the non-minimum phase control path transfer function. Conditions to guarantee the closed loop stability of the system are also discussed in terms of the selection of the design freedom. The approach is validated through simulation using a non-collocated vibration control problem.
Assembly and disassembly processes are similar from the viewpoint of automation. Assembly process is more or less a classical subject;disassembly process is more a quite new field. Flexible system are very important i...
