This paper presents development of a new approach involving adaptable chemotactic step size in bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA). Standard BFA only offers a constant chemotactic step size for all nutrient values. The chemotactic step size can be made adaptive, i.e. the chemotactic step size is changed to follow certain condition. The objective of the paper is to investigate adaptation schemes in the BFA so that the chemotactic step size may change depending on the nutrient value. Three approaches, namely using linear function, quadratic function, and exponential function are presented. In the full BFA algorithm, the three proposed approaches will use the new chemotactic step size instead of constant value. Test results with benchmark functions show that BFA with the proposed adaptable step size mechanisms is able to converge faster to the global optimum than the standard BFA.

This work carries out design and implementation of a PID control algorithm utilizing genetic algorithm as an optimization technique for a novel design of a two-wheeled vehicle with an extended rod. The vehicle design offers an additional feature to the conventional inverted pendulum on two wheels. The intermediate body (IB) of the vehicle is composed of two co-axial parts connected by a linear actuator and with a payload attached to the end of the upper part. The linear actuator allows the payload to move up and down along the IB of the vehicle. Considering the various positions, speeds and different sizes of a payload, carried by the vehicle, while maintaining the entire vehicle balanced is the main challenge of the current study. Dynamic modeling of the system is based on utilizing Lagrangian formulation to drive the system equations of motion.

The control of plasma in nuclear fusion has been revealed as a promising application of controlengineering, with increasing interest in the control community during last years. In this paper it is developed a control-oriented linear model for the control of plasma current. For this purpose, it is provided a summary of the background necessary to deal with control problems in tokamak-based nuclear fusion reactors as it is the case of the future ITER tokamak. Besides, it is also given a review of the most used simulators and plasma models, with the aim of providing an adequate background for control engineers to derive their own control-oriented model or to choose the appropriate existing one. Finally, the proposed plasma model performance is proven in a current drive profile trajectory tracking problem using a modified anti-windup PIDbased control scheme.
