Worst-Case Integrity Attacks and Resilient State Estimation With Partially Secured Measurements

This paper examines the problem of optimal deception attacks against state estimation with partially secured measurements, where smart sensors transmit innovation sequences to the remote end for information fusion. Due to resource limitations or defensive countermeasures, the adversary can only modify data packets transmitted through unreliable channels. Meanwhile, the attack should be synthesized with sophistication to deceive an anomaly detector. To investigate the vulnerabilities of such estimation systems without feedback links and enhance security performance, the optimal attack policy is derived by formulating and explicitly solving a convex optimization problem, with the goal of maximizing the sum of estimation errors. Subsequently, a novel attack detection and resilient state estimation algorithm is proposed to ensure an acceptable level of estimation accuracy. The theoretical performance metrics, including false alarm rates for the proposed detector, are provided. Finally, the effectiveness of the results is confirmed through numerical examples. © 2014 IEEE.

Improved Synthesis of Nondeterministic Publicly-Known Edit Functions for Opacity Enforcement

In this paper, we investigate the synthesis problem of edit functions for opacity enforcement in systems modelled as partially-observed finite-state automata. For better plausible deniability for the edit functions, in cases where the intruder may learn/know their existence, a synthesis problem for nondeterministic edit functions under a publicly-known setting was introduced in the literature, but not yet fully solved. In light of this, we revisit the publicly-known edit mechanism by proposing a sound and complete approach for solving the synthesis problem of nondeterministic publicly-known edit functions. For practical applications, the edit function is assumed to have limited erasure and insertion ability. Our approach is based on a new labelled finite-state structure, and results in wider applicability than previously-proposed in the literature. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Calibration-free method of recovering the time-varying absorbance profile in TDLAS by the Fourier reconstructed spectroscopy

Traditional scan-direct absorption spectroscopy (scan-DAS) is susceptible to 1/f noise, limiting its ability to realize high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurements. This study proposes a calibration-free and noise-immune method, named fast scan–Fourier reconstructed spectroscopy (FC-FRS), capable of improving the SNR of the single-shot absorbance spectrum and reconstructing the time-varying absorbance without decreasing the time resolution. Two validation experiments with CO2 absorbance varying over time were designed using a shock tube device within the millisecond time duration. In the first validation experiment, CO2 was gradually released during the combustion of hydrocarbons, resulting in the slowly increased CO2 absorbance. The average spectral SNR of FC-FRS reconstructed absorbance at 2100 K reached 73.51, which increased by 22.83 % compared to the original scan-DAS spectrum. The CO2 generation profile extracted from the recovered absorbance agreed well with the prediction of kinetic mechanisms. In the second experiment where the CO2 absorbance was stable behind the reflected shock at 1312 K, the average spectral SNR of the recovered absorbance line behind the reflected shock was 433.81, which is 44 % higher than that of the scan-DAS spectrum. The averaged fitted line strength from the recovered absorbance curve had a relative error of only 1.07 % compared to the HITAN2020 database. Finally, the proposed method was compared with the 2f/1f method of scan-WMS in a static CO measurement experiment, the FC-FRS showed the similar SNR but better stability over time. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

High node mobility, rapid topology changes provide specific challenges for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), which have an immediate impact on the routing protocols' performance. Traditional approaches, like the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol, provide proactive route management but fail to fully account for critical dynamic parameters like link stability, relative vehicle speed, node distance, and bandwidth availability. This work proposes a hybrid method combining OLSR with Q-learning to facilitate real-time adaptive routing. The model leverages dynamic metrics to proactively evaluate links while employing Q-learning to optimize routing decisions based on rewards computed from performance factors like delay, packet loss rate, and link duration. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms classic OLSR. The improvements include reduced packet loss rates, increased average throughput, lower average latency, and a reduction in control overhead. These findings confirm that integrating dynamic metrics and adaptive learning effectively addresses the challenges posed by VANETs.

Optimal Sensor Placement for Full-Set TDOA Localization Accounting for Sensor Location Errors

The positioning accuracy of a signal source is influenced by where the sensors are deployed. Studies in the literature for the optimal sensor placement (OSP) of localization often ignore the presence of sensor position errors. In practice, however, it is impossible to place the sensors precisely at the desired locations. This work designs OSP by accounting for the presence of Gaussian sensor position errors that are independent and identically distributed (IID), with the full set of Time Difference of Arrival measurements corrupted by Gaussian IID noise. The criterion is the A-optimality equal to the trace of the source position Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB). We show that the presence of sensor position errors introduces a multiplication factor to the same criterion for the case without sensor position errors. The latter factor is dependent on the ratio of the sensor position error power to the range difference noise power but independent of the sensor positions, implying that the A-optimality OSP in the presence of sensor position errors is the same as in the absence. To our knowledge, this is the first time such results have been derived. Simulation studies validate the derived OSP, show the minimal OSP performance gap with sensor positioning error and without, and illustrate the better source localization accuracy by OSP. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

In this paper, a dual-beam photothermal self-mixing substance trace detection system is proposed. The crystal violet (CV) solution of the sample undergoes a thermal lens effect under the action of pump photoperiod excitation, and the refractive index changes cause the deviation of the probe beam, and the self-mixing interference (SMI) effect occurs when the modulated light returns to the cavity. By combining theoretical and experimental results, the power fluctuation of the SMI signal caused by the thermo-optic effect is linearly related to CV concentration and other parameters. At an excitation power of 24 mW, the detection limit can reach $8.0 \times {10^{- 8}}\;{\rm mol/L}$ . This method does not require labeling or complex CV pretreatment and has high sensitivity and flexibility, providing a guide for CV characterization in biological, environmental, and pharmaceutical research.

Spacecraft solar arrays convert sunlight into electrical energy to fulfil the energy requirements of various missions. This work proposes a comprehensive environment for accurate power operation predictions. Specifically, this environment simulates the behaviour of a body-mounted solar array. Furthermore, the designing and modelling processes of the solar array require considering different technical and practical constraints posed by the space environment. These challenges necessitate a thorough evaluation of all potential sources of losses and degradation. Compared to conventional approaches, our novel SSA model incorporates the complete spacecraft mission design scenario, thus it incorporates the operational cyclogram and power budget calculation. To substantiate our proposed method, telemetry data from the commercial LEOS-50 platform is leveraged to develop an experimental, mathematical, and thermal in-orbit model based on GaAs technology. This approach stands out for its exceptional accuracy in predicting the output power characteristics of solar panels. Therefore, it ensures achieving mission requirements from inception to completion in the beginning-of-life and end-of-life stages. The results demonstrate the success of the SSA operation in converting sunlight into electrical energy with a high conversion rate. © 2025 The Authors

Achieving accurate electricity price prediction is essential for market participants aiming to maximize their profits. In this respect, forecasting wholesale electricity market price plays a pivotal role. The advanced nonlinear modeling capabilities of deep learning networks have shown notable success in forecasting electricity prices. However, designing such networks, particularly selecting their optimal hyperparameters, still remains a big challenge. This paper presents a Modified Sine Algorithm Dung Beetle Optimization algorithm (MSADBO) as an improved Dung Beetle Optimization (DBO) algorithm to optimize the hyperparameters of the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network to handle the electricity price forecasting in the Italian wholesale market. After optimizing the three most important hyperparameters of the LSTM using MSADBO, the efficiency of the model has shown a drastic improvement. Comparisons with conventional and machine learning-based approaches show that the LSTM-MSADBO model is highly precise in predictions with increased robustness and effectively captures volatility in the electricity market price.

In recent years, as people’s living standards have improved and consumption concepts have been transformed, the demand for purchasing consumer electronics online has continued to grow, further stimulating the development of the logistics industry. Consequently, how to deliver consumer electronics to households at minimal cost has become a crucial factor that limits the development of the consumer technology industry. To tackle this problem, this paper studies the task assignment problem for multiple initially dispersed UAVs to deliver products to target locations while minimizing their total operation time. Each UAV can continuously provide delivery services to multiple target locations within its limited loading capacity and operation time. To solve this problem, we propose several hybrid multipopulation genetic algorithms. First, a novel crossover operator for the genetic algorithms is designed, through which a single parent chromosome can generate offspring individually. Second, two mutation mechanisms are performed to increase gene diversity. Third, multiple local search strategies are employed to enhance the populations’ fitness during each iteration of evolution. An improved 2-opt local search strategy is applied to optimize individual chromosomes when their similarity with the current best chromosome falls below a prescribed threshold. Alternatively, local search strategies are utilized for 1-opt, 2h-opt and interchange processes. Combining local search strategies, genetic operators, and the multi-population mechanism leads to several hybrid multi-population genetic algorithms. Numerical simulations and experimental tests demonstrate that the hybrid multi-population genetic algorithm, integrated with the improved 2-opt and 1-opt local search strategies, exhibits superior performance among the designed hybrid genetic algorithms, the minimum marginal cost algorithm (MMA), and the existing popular Co-evolutionary Multi-population Genetic Algorithm (CMGA). Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) applications encounter issues with data protection, continual adaptation, and domain-specific knowledge retention, especially in consumer-centric IoMT scenarios. We overcome these obstacles and facilitate effective knowledge retention and task adaptation in IoMT applications. This study attempts to create a unique privacy-preserving federated learning framework that combines a hierarchical learning structure with Continual Learning (CL). Despite the advancements in Federated Learning (FL), current models have trouble integrating changing datasets in real-time while protecting privacy, as well as catastrophic forgetting, which occurs when previously learned knowledge is lost when adjusting to new tasks. We present a hierarchical learning framework that makes use of three levels of models -Junior Model (JM), Consultant Model (CM), and Senior Consultant Model (SCM) -to overcome these drawbacks. Each level of the model aids in archived retention and domain-knowledge adaptation. To guarantee that the model maintains valuable information over time and adapts to new tasks with ease, our method blends domain adaptation strategies with ongoing learning approaches like knowledge distillation and elastic weight consolidation (EWC). We compare the suggested methodology with current state-of-the-art (SOTA) models on healthcare datasets for tasks like illness diagnosis and medical image categorization. According to our findings, the hierarchical continual learning model performs better than SOTA techniques in terms of accuracy, task adaptability, and privacy protection. In the healthcare industry, our study sets a new standard for privacy-preserving, continuously adaptable federated learning systems, allowing for real-time, scalable IoMT applications that can adapt dynamically to a variety of changing datasets. © 1975-2011 IEEE.
