The paper considers a feedback optimising control of drinking water distribution systems (DWDS). Although the optimised pump and valves scheduling and disinfectant injection control attracted considerable attention over last two decades most of the contributions were limited to an open-loop optimisation repetitively performed during the DWDS operation. An information feedback from the DWDS is needed in reality in order to compensate uncertainty in the water demand prediction and the modelling errors. Also, while a strong interaction between the water quantity and quality exists most of the proposals regards either quality or quantity control. In this paper a generic model predictive controller for the optimising control of an integrated quantity and quality in DWDS is derived and applied to the case - study system. An important feature of linear model predictive control (MPC) is the ability to provide offset-free control through integral action. Linear MPC can utilize a steady-state target optimizer (SSTO) in conjunction with a dynamic optimization in order to manage systems that are non-square, have integrating modes, or encounter infeasible setpoints. Integral action does not ensure that the feasible steady-state target is closest to the true optimum when the desired setpoint is infeasible. This paper describes the modifications necessary to linear state-space MPC algorithms in order to address this problem (assuming systems with no integrating modes). The solution employs features of the Integrated System Optimization and Parameter Estimation (ISOPE) algorithm: the SSTO cost is modified by a term that results in matching of the true plant and model conditions necessary for optimality. This work combines well with prior work [19], [20] which has determined the situations where the modification is actually necessary.

This paper deals with the problem of numerical analysis of multidimensional systems with interval parameters in relation to the operability of MIMO systems. The problem is analyzed for the case when the relative estimation of the interval parameters exceeds 0.5 and based on the assumption that only the state matrix of a MIMO system contains interval parameters. The problem of operability estimation of the MIMO system is solved with interval degeneration factors. Interval degeneration factors are constructed using interval arithmetic and the singular values of the interval criterion matrices of the system. An operability analysis algorithm of multidimensional systems with interval parameters is proposed in the paper. The results are supported with an example.

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of different Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) models for administering Propofol and Remifentanil, two critical agents in anesthesia. Initially, different PK models were introduced: one for Propofol based on the Schnider model and another for Remifentanil using the Minto model. Alternatively, both drugs were modeled using the Eleveld models. The PK-PD models were integrated into a closed-loop control system using model predictive control (MPC) with disturbances to control the Bispectral index (BIS) and the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS). The methodology involved simulating the anesthetic agents in the open-source patient simulator (2 inputs, 2 outputs) with 12 patient datasets in a controlled environment to simulate the patient response variability, allowing for a detailed analysis of the model's performance in maintaining optimal drug concentrations. The primary focus was on the system's ability to adapt to surgical disturbances, a key challenge in anesthesia management, and whether a different modeling of drugs can have an impact on their effects. The results indicated significant differences in the performance of the two models configurations. The Eleveld model for Propofol showed less usage of drugs to maintain the desired BIS value. Concluding that this comparative analysis offers a valuable reference for selecting appropriate modeling approaches in the development of advanced control strategies in anesthesia.

A number of neural network models and training procedures for time series prediction have been proposed in the technical literature. These models typically used uni-directional computation flow or its modifications. In this study a novel concept of bi-directional computation style is proposed and applied to prediction tasks. Since the coupling effects between the future prediction system and the past prediction system help the proposed model improve its performance, it is found that the prediction score is better than with the traditional uni-directional method. The bi-directional predicting architecture has been found to perform better than the conventional one when tested with standard benchmark sunspots data.

We previously studied amplitude estimation of one-dimensional (1D) sinusoidal signals from measurements corrupted by possibly colored observation noise (see Stoica, P. et al., IEEE Trans. on Sig. Proc., vol. 48, p.338-52, 2000). We extend those results for two-dimensional (2D) amplitude estimation. In particular, we investigate the 2D sinusoidal amplitude estimation within the general frameworks of least squares (LS), weighted least squares (WLS), and MAtched FIlterbank (MAFI) estimation. A variety of 2D amplitude estimators are presented, which are all asymptotically statistically efficient. The performances of these estimators in finite samples are compared numerically with one another. Making use of amplitude estimation techniques, we introduce a new scheme for 2D system identification, which is shown to be computationally simpler and statistically more accurate than the conventional output error method (OEM), when the observation noise is colored.
