We consider the problem of occupancy estimation in buildings using available environmental information. In particular, we study the problem of how to collect data that is informative enough for occupancy estimation purposes. We thus propose an application-oriented input design approach for designing the ventilation signal to be used while collecting the system identification datasets. The main goal of the method is to guarantee a certain accuracy in the estimated occupancy levels while minimizing the experimental time and effort. To take into account potential limitations on the actuation signals we moreover formulate the problem as a recursive nonlinear and nonconvex optimization problem, solved then using exhaustive search methods. We finally corroborate the theoretical findings with some numerical examples, which results show that computing ventilation signals using experiment design concepts leads to occupancy estimator performing 4 times better in terms of Mean Square Error (MSE).

This research presents a comprehensive analysis of quadrotor stabilization and trajectory tracking control using Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) and Sliding Mode control (SMC) with integrated disturbance rejection. The nonlinear dynamics of the quadrotor are formulated using the Newton-Euler approach, accounting for six degrees of freedom. The PID controller is implemented as a baseline, while the SMC is designed for enhanced robustness to model uncertainties and external perturbations, with a disturbance observer for managing time-varying disturbances. A rigorous Lyapunov stability proof ensures global asymptotic stability of the SMC-controlled system. Extensive simulations evaluate both controllers in terms of tracking accuracy, control effort, and robustness to external disturbances. Results show that SMC outperforms PID in dis-turbance rejection, tracking accuracy, and robustness, making it ideal for UAV applications in complex environments.

This paper describes an evolving Arithmetic Design System (ADS) to support the quantitative evaluation of alternate number systems with respect to a given application and realization technology. In computer arithmetic we are concerned with establishing a correspondence between abstract quantities (numbers) and some physical representation (symbols), and with simulating the operations on these symbols. The ADS is intended to help study the cost and performance of alternate simulations. A finite number system is a triple consisting of a symbol set (elements are called "digit-vectors"), an interpretation set, a mapping between these two sets, and a set of operators (digit-vector algorithms) defined on its symbol set. A set of these digit vector algorithms are proposed for conducting arithmetic design. A number system matrix defines the digit vector algorithm for numerous number systems and a method for computing time and space complexity of compositions of these algorithms is proposed. An example of how the system could be used to compare addition, with and without overflow detection, for three number systems is given.

The paper proposes a look-ahead cruise control method considering both energy efficiency and the safety of vehicle motion. Based on the curve radius of the road, a method is proposed for the calculation of the safe cornering velocity, which is used in the look-ahead control design process. If the speed limit is in conflict with the calculated safe cornering velocity, the latter is applied in the energy optimization process of the look-ahead control algorithm. Thus, the designed velocity is coherent with the terrain characteristics, the speed limits and the geometry of the road as well, enabling the vehicle to travel safely and energy efficiently along the path. The main novelty of the paper is the consideration of the safe cornering velocity in the look-ahead design, improving energy efficiency and the safety of the vehicle during various maneuvers.
