We investigate the design of identification experiments using some recent asymptotic expressions for the variance of the estimated transfer function. In particular we highlight a number of applications for which it is beneficial to let the experiment be carried out in closed loop.

A multi-level model, that provides a hierarchically structured description of a complex, multi-scale limb system is proposed in this paper for predicting and analyzing movement patters generated by various activation signals. The levels, the sub-models on each level and their interconnections are developed and described following a systematic modelling procedure. The computational properties (degree of freedom and differential index) of the developed model have been analyzed and a sub-model has been transformed to meet the index-one requirement for solving the resulting differential algebraic equation (DAE) model by standard methods implemented in MATLAB. The model is extensively verified against engineering expectations using parameter values found in the literature, and a good agreement was found. Parameter sensitivity analysis has also been performed.

Within one organization, there are often many conceptually related but technically separated information systems. Many of these are legacy systems representing enormous developmp-ç m,ent efforts, and containing large amounts of data. The integration of these often requires extensive design modifications. Reusing applications "as is" with all the knowledge and data they represent would be a much more practical solution. This paper describes the Business Object Model, a model providing integration and reuse of existing applications and cross applications modelling capabilities and a Business Object Framework implementing the object model. We also present a product supporting the model and the framework, Information Organizer, and a number of design patterns that have been built on top of it to further decrease the amount of work needed to integrate legacy systems. We describe one such pattern in detail, a general mechanism for reusing relational databases.

This paper summarizes the results from a large-scale survey on the content and teaching philosophy of the first, and in many cases the only, control course taken by undergraduate students in engineering and applied sciences around the world. The IFAC Technical Committee on Education developed and administered the survey in 2019. At the time of writing, 201 control professionals have responded to the survey. The majority view is that the first course in control should focus on concepts and avoid excessive mathematical proofs. The responders ranked the depth of coverage of 63 topics commonly found in introductory control texts. Based on the ranking results, a sample curriculum for a first control course is outlined.

An important aspect of linear controller design is to clarify whether the design reaches the performance limit. Based on an industrial project-a high precision three-axis gyro test table (servo system), a paradigm is presented to demonstrate that the performance limit of the disturbance attenuation design of the servo system can be reached in a systematic way by using the μ -synthesis. Moreover, this paper reveals that the performance limit is determined by the bandwidth. This finding will help the designer to judge whether any given performance specification is achievable.

The present article deals with the problem of evaluating the effects of quantization on a nonlinear sampled-data control system. The control strategy is based on a suitable digital design of "backstepping" type controllers and it was proposed in a previous article. The advantage of this design is that it preserves, under sampling, the stabilizing performances imposed in the continuous-time design. The control solution comprises heavily nonlinear expressions and to study the effects of quantization is strongly requested. This work captures the contributions of the sampling period, of the degree of controllers' approximations and of the numerical precision in the performance of a sampled-data controller.
