In this paper is proposed a Data Driven control (DDC) law of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) drive as an alternative to the Model Predictive control (MPC) strategy. The DDC method is designed for the inner control structure of the PMSM drive, the outer speed loop being employed by a classical linear PI controller. Thus, the DDC is based on build up a database of the relevant quantities as electromagnetic torque, speed, voltages and current, all obtained in steady-state regime with MPC strategy, being selected for the highest efficiency values for a given pair of speed and torque. The learning process of the DDC strategy by a mutidimesional interpolation method leads to obtain high performances in both steady-state and dynamic regimes, without any additional optimal current reference command. A comparative analysis done in Matlab simulation environment of the results obtained by both MPC and DDC control laws shows the effectiveness of the last strategies. The DDC method provide a robust optimal control under energetic constraints, being more suitable then the classical MPC law that can not offers reliable results for a large area of conditions in practice. © 2024 IEEE.

Deep convolutional neural networks have triggered important progress in image-to-image mapping. The enhanced learning capabilities allow them to understand the input visual layout and perform local transformations customized to image content. This paper discusses an approach based on Generative Adversarial Convolutional Neural Networks (GAN) to help augment training datasets with generated images. The proposed design uses a loss function that integrates terms based on image quality metrics to validate the production of realistic images. This allows the configuration of neural parameters according to the visual perception of the generated images, without imposing a strict pixel-wise similarity with targets. This technique could be helpful for real applications in which supervised training should be done for pairs of input-output images that do not illustrate the same scene. The performance of the proposed approach is illustrated by a transformation of outdoor scenes from summer to winter. The experiments performed for different GAN schemes and quality metrics show improved quality of the generated images when the loss function includes loss terms related to visual perception.

Any business processes in an enterprise are associated with the need to periodically assess possible risk situations. Today, assessing risks in order to control them is not enough. It is necessary to continuously, cyclically and on an ongoing basis carry out risk management, which has already become an integral part of the management of the organization. However, the complexity of assessing and analyzing events associated with an unfavorable outcome dictates to organizational systems, which include the subject area considered in the work - a cargo port, the need to develop and use tools that allow for a comprehensive assessment of activities from the point of view of possible risks, including the possibility of cognitive evaluation of each of the results obtained. Risks are considered as situations of failure to meet goals, as well as target standards. The developed balanced scorecard (BS) contains a set of goals and indicators that complement them. In addition to this, through multi-level hybrid and scenario LP risk models of a cargo port, logical and probabilistic connections between goals, indicators and risks arising at all three levels of management are formulated. The basis of the ontological model is knowledge about the above-mentioned connections, the integrated use of which through appropriate queries allows you to choose ways to bypass risk situations under the existing specified conditions. The query results form experimental scenarios with a multi-approach simulation model and allow you to obtain quantitative estimates of indicators, goals and risks. Taking into account all available stochastic characteristics, influencing factors, and also based on information about the results of the experiment, the decision maker formulates the values of the parameters of the original organizational system necessary to adjust in order to prevent the development and aggravation of risk events. © 2024 IEEE.

Mobility in urban areas evolved massively in recent decades, leading in a continuous manner to traffic difficulties and significantly increasing the number of accidents, especially in crowded intersections. While much attention has been paid to controlling individual vehicles, recently the wireless communication networks were integrated as main ingredients for cooperation between vehicles with the other traffic participants and smart infrastructure. Thus, the fifth-generation (5G) communication technology promises an increase of the capacity for the existent cellular network, a faster connection, an ultra-low latency, and higher reliability. Moreover, device-to-device (D2D) communication is an essential feature when a large amount of devices have to be connected. The main advantage of D2D communication is the direct exchange of information between devices, without having to send the signal through the base station. Hence, this paper uses the Simu5G simulator to explore the D2D communication in a vehicle communication scenario by analysing the quality of the network. For this, the network performance was evaluated by monitoring the Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) and the message flow during the movement of the cars. The obtained results are in accordance with the real-time operation of the 5G technology. © 2022 IEEE.

Data-driven control (DDC) algorithms have been developed in the last decades, whose design is based only on the data collected from the controlled plant, without using a process model. These techniques that do not use an explicit model of the system have become very attractive for the control of complex processes with high nonlinearities. This paper presents two DDC algorithms, one model-free adaptive control (MFAC), and the other model-free intelligent P(iP), whose performances are experimentally evaluated using the AERO 2 platform, a highly nonlinear aerospace system made by Quanser. The similarities and differences between the two DDC are succinctly presented and based on the results obtained through real-time experiments, the performances are compared.

Managing anesthesia and hemodynamic regulation during surgical procedures poses significant challenges due to patient-specific variability and the complex interactions of administered drugs. While advanced monitoring systems and Target-controlled Infusion (TCI) devices enhance precision in drug delivery, their reliance on manual adjustments limits real-time adaptability. This study investigates two advanced control strategies–centralized Model Predictive control (MPC) and decentralized fractional-order control–within a multivariable framework designed to regulate hypnosis, analgesia, and hemodynamic stabilization. Virtual patient simulations were used to evaluate these approaches under diverse anesthetic and, notably, hemodynamic conditions. The findings reveal that MPC delivers superior precision in maintaining the Bispectral Index (BIS) but tends to apply more aggressive adjustments to hemodynamic variables. In contrast, fractional-order control ensures smoother responses, though its ability to handle disturbances is less robust in certain scenarios. This study highlights the trade-offs between these strategies and advocates for further exploration of hybrid solutions to enhance patient safety and surgical outcomes.

The development, enhancement, and integration of intelligent functionalities aimed at automating vehicles are increasingly becoming a fundamental aspect of modern life. There is a growing emphasis on improving the everyday driving experience and reaping the benefits that these advanced cars offer. In light of these advancements, this study proposes a novel method for extracting trajectories, which serves as a valuable tool in implementing and evaluating complex algorithms and functionalities. Obtaining a real trajectory enables the observation of how a vehicle moves along a given road. Moreover, the extracted trajectory can also facilitate the development of additional functionalities such as lane keeping, velocity profile, and other advanced techniques. This multifaceted approach allows for the exploration and refinement of various intelligent systems, ultimately contributing to the overall improvement of autonomous driving capabilities. The proposed method of trajectory extraction opens up new possibilities for advancing the field, providing a solid foundation for implementing and evaluating intricate algorithms. Through the utilization of real trajectories, valuable insights into vehicle behavior can be gained, which can further enhance the performance of autonomous vehicles. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper focuses on developing a simulation platform that enhances Human-Robot Interaction through intuitive and safe interchanges between human operators and a UR5e robot by operating a Digital Twin via Mixed Reality. Using the ROS Noetic framework and Unity software for development, in conjunction with Microsoft HoloLens 2, this work presents a system based on Mixed Reality designed for collaborative robotic experiences. Moreover, a key innovation in this research is integrating a ZED camera for real-time human tracking, which enables the simultaneous simulation of humans and robots within a shared mixed environment. This advancement builds upon an existing digital twin of the robot. However, it also significantly enriches the system’s capabilities for ensuring safety and facilitating intuitive interactions, validating the implemented methodology through simulation and real-life experimental results. The paper examines the implications of this development in different industrial and research contexts. It highlights the growing significance of mixed-reality technologies in creating complex human-robot interaction systems that ensure safety and efficiency.

The soft robotics field offers a large variety of actuators and robots, complex structures and designs able to behave in a required way, offering speed and resistance and at the same time reducing the contact damage chance. The control of such structures using mathematical methods requires complex methods which evolved over time in the form of predictive control and even neural networks and genetic algorithms. The current paper presents ongoing research that can be found at the intersection of meta-materials and sensor technology. It approaches a simpler method of controlling a flexible actuator based on a shape memory alloy, the regulator being a two-state switch controller steered by a pressure force sensor. We propose a complete analogical electrical structure and analyze the performance of the outcome, focusing on time response. The present work also contains a brief description of a mechanical design proposal able to optimize the impact of the shape memory alloy used, in order to obtain an amplified actuation.

The applications related to cooperative automated driving need to share periodic safety information with neighboring vehicles in a reliable and low-latency manner. However, the performance of vehicular ad-hoc technologies degrades substantially when the channel becomes congested. Therefore, this paper presents a channel congestion evaluation method for V2V safety communication for the IEEE 802.11p protocol. The evaluation addresses multiplatooning applications, in which the vehicles' density is a defining element. To illustrate the negative effects of the channel load level, a number of relevant performance metrics were analyzed, such as Channel Busy Ratio (CBR), Packet Loss Rate (PLR), and Inter-Packet Delay (IPD).
