The aim of the project was to build a prototype of a turbine drive with a controllable thrust vector for a long-range vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. The construction of the prototype required the development of a vectoring system for the tail propulsion system and a dedicated VTOL aircraft stabilization and control system. The prototype of the turbine drive system was based on energy-efficient electric motors. Research also involved modeling the turbine propulsion aerodynamics with usage of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. As a result of the design stage, a prototype of the propulsion system was created, on which flight tests were carried out. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

UPB at IberLEF-2023 AuTexTification: Detection of Machine-Generated Text using Transformer Ensembles

This paper describes the solutions submitted by the UPB team to the AuTexTification shared task, featured as part of IberLEF-2023. Our team participated in the first subtask, identifying text documents produced by large language models instead of humans. The organizers provided a bilingual dataset for this subtask, comprising English and Spanish texts covering multiple domains, such as legal texts, social media posts, and how-to articles. We experimented mostly with deep learning models based on Transformers, as well as training techniques such as multi-task learning and virtual adversarial training to obtain better results. We submitted three runs, two of which consisted of ensemble models. Our best-performing model achieved macro F1-scores of 66.63% on the English dataset and 67.10% on the Spanish dataset. © 2023, CC BY.

Optical system is a basic component of infrared (IR) imaging systems that affect the image quality of the observed field of view (FOV). Responsible for collecting IR radiation from the scene and projecting it onto detector pixels. The optical system's characteristics, such as lens material, focal length, and optical diameter, critically impact the amount of transmitted IR radiation. The design process aims to eliminate and limit aberrations to enhance performance. Increasing spatial resolution and widening the FOV are crucial for image quality improvement. In this study, we present a unique high-resolution wide FOV optical design for an infrared objective operating in the long-wave infrared (LWIR) band $(\mathbf{8}-\mathbf{12}\ \boldsymbol{\mu} \mathbf{m})$ . Utilizing the time-tested Cooke triplet structure as the foundation, we enhance its capabilities through the implementation of a splitting methodology. This approach allows for improved control over aberrations and enhances the optical design's overall performance. Ansys Zemax OpticStudio software was employed to optimize radii of curvatures and thicknesses based on the proposed merit function operands. Our concept makes use of a small pixel size $(\mathbf{15}\ \mu \mathbf{m})$ to achieve an expansive FOV of 18° along with a high spatial resolution of 31 cycles/mm. This makes the design a highly suitable candidate for diverse remote sensing observation applications.

The optimization of crop harvesting processes for commonly cultivated crops is of great importance in the aim of agricultural industrialization. Nowadays, the utilization of machine vision has enabled the automated identification of crops, leading to the enhancement of harvesting efficiency, but challenges still exist. This study presents a new framework that combines two separate architectures of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in order to simultaneously accomplish the tasks of crop detection and harvesting (robotic manipulation) inside a simulated environment. Crop images in the simulated environment are subjected to random rotations, cropping, brightness, and contrast adjustments to create augmented images for dataset generation. The You Only Look Once(YOLO) algorithmic framework is employed with traditional Rectangular Bounding Boxes (R-Bbox) for crop localization. The proposed method subsequently utilises the acquired image data via a visual geometry group model in order to reveal the grasping positions for the robotic manipulation. © 2024 IEEE.

computer vision has gained great regard in the past few years and one of the most important branches of this field is object detection. It was usual to detect objects using visible images that need good illumination conditions to obtain high performance, but this type of images exhibits unsatisfactory attitude in bad environmental conditions and darkness situations. Other alternatives are emerging, such as infrared images which depend on the infrared radiation emitted or reflected from objects. Infrared imaging systems can be used in complete darkness, so the problem of visible images can be overcome. There are many object detection models which take images as an input and predict location and class type for each element in the image. So, a comparative study using deep learning based infrared object detection models (YOLOv3-4GB, YOLOv5s, YOLOv7) was performed. The models were trained on Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) dataset that contains 3 classes (person-car-bicycle). The YOLOv7 model attained the best performance and achieved Mean Average Precision (mAP) of 82.4%.

This paper presents a refined complexity calculus model: r-Complexity, a new asymptotic notation that offers better complexity feedback for similar programs than the traditional Bachmann-Landau notation, providing subtle insights even for algorithms that are part of the same conventional complexity class. This paper presents the design and development of a Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) fixed-wing aircraft intended for autonomous missions. It provides an overview of the current state of VTOL technology and its applications. The paper focuses on fixed-wing VTOL aircraft created by Academic Scientific Association High Flyers from the Silesian University of Technology in Poland. The design process and considerations are discussed in detail, including aerodynamics, selection of materials, hardware, control systems and software. Finally, the paper discusses real-world scenarios that the designed UAV could be used to solve real-world problems, such as targeted plant protection or the deployment of oral vaccines for wildlife. The authors successfully tested solutions presented in the paper during competitions and real practical applications. Overall, this paper provides a comprehensive look into the design and development of a VTOL aircraft for autonomous missions and presents its effectiveness and capabilities in solving real-life problems.

Pose-graph optimization for efficient tie-point matching and 3D scene reconstruction from oblique UAV images

Oblique photogrammetry using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is crucial to 3D scene reconstruction. Nevertheless, oblique images are generally acquired with large overlaps, and sometimes with multiple views. Although this increases the level of data completeness, it introduces additional and sometimes redundant computations in tie-point matching, creating overly dense camera connections in the pose graph for bundle adjustment (BA). This study optimizes the pose graph of oblique UAV images by removing redundant image connections to guide tie-point matching. Assuming a five-camera system for oblique image collection, a pose graph called a topologically connected camera network (TCN) was initially constructed using position and orientation system (POS) data to determine the spatial connectivity among oblique images. Second, five geometric meta-parameters of overlapping images were constructed, and their influence on tie-point matching was analyzed using a data-driven approach to generate a weighted pose graph. Third, the weighted pose graph was simplified to a degree-bounded skeletal camera network (D-SCN) using the proposed two-stage multi-objective graph optimization approach. Finally, the D-SCN was embedded into a structure from motion (SfM) pipeline to produce a novel D-SCN–SfM method to reduce the required computations for tie-point matching. The proposed D-SCN-SfM method was tested using data from three large sites, each containing over 5,000 images. In addition, the D-SCN-SfM method was compared with three state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results indicate that our method can significantly reduce the required computations for tie-point matching to 1/14–1/20 as compared to a method that uses only topological constraints, that is, TCN, saving 89–92% of the time expenditure. Furthermore, the accuracy and completeness of the 3D geometry produced by the proposed method were comparable to those produced by standard SfM methods. The source code of our approach

The occurrence of intraoperative hypertension/ hypotension may cause danger to a patient. Therefore, the monitoring of blood pressure change during surgical operation is momentous for anesthetized patient undergoing surgical procedures. The invasive method of measuring arterial blood pressure (ABP) provides accurate and much information, but it requires evaluation by an anesthesiologist and with its long-term use, it also brings a higher risk of infection, and even some patients have pain and discomfort at the catheter placement site after surgery, so it is not suitable for all types of patients. On the other hand, non-invasive method of measuring cuff blood pressure provides little information because of non-continuous measurement. With the emerging of deep learning, there has been more and more discussion on whether non-invasive Photoplethysmography (PPG) can replace invasive ABP as an alternative to continuous BP measurement and even BP prediction. This paper aims to implement a deep learning model to predict SBP/DBP signal by PPG, PPG extended data and Electrocardiography (ECG) data. We trained the CNN-based architecture on preprocessed data including ECG, PPG, 1st and 2nd derivative PPG signal extracted from MIMIC-III(Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III) waveform database matched subset to predict continuous ABP signals using real world data. The value of SBP and DBP are directly predicted to effectively estimate the accuracy of the predictions. The prediction results fulfill the grade A in British Hypertension Society (BHS) standard and most part of Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)'s standard. The proposed model has been applied for CHANGHUA CHRISTIAN HOSPITAL's IRB NO:191240. The results depict that our proposed model could effectively predict SBP/DBP signal and be deployed to the operating room realistically. © 2022 IEEE.

Multiphase LLC Resonant Converter with Natural Current Sharing and Phase-Shedding

The multiphase LLC converter is commonly used for high-power and high step-down applications. However, the tolerances in the tank circuit parameters cause uneven current sharing (CS), reducing system reliability. Additionally, phase-shedding (PS) can improve converter efficiency at partial load by turning-OFF phases. This paper proposes a multiphase input-parallel output-parallel LLC resonant converter with a common inductor-capacitor branch, with the objective to achieve excellent CS and phase-shedding at the same time. Thanks to the shared branch, current-sharing is natural, and phase-shedding is realized without affecting the operating point. With fewer passive comp- onents and a simple phase connection, the design offers low-cost, high-power density, and improved light-load efficiency compared to existing solutions. Detailed analysis shows improved CS on both the primary and secondary sides, when compared to previous approaches. Simulation and experimental results for the proposed two-phase LLC resonant converter validate the analysis and illustrate the effectiveness of the CS and PS capabilities. At the rated load of 800 W, CS error is 2.48% on the primary side and 2.0% on the secondary side. Phase-shedding improves efficiency by 3.60% at 50% load and 6.82% at 25% load. © 1972-2012 IEEE.
